Absolutely Outstanding June 6, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The final series opens with the observation that, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public". Fortunately, The Sopranos proves to be the exception to the rule. Everything about the Sopranos--the acting, directing, writing, casting, cinematography, even the set dressing--is perfectly thought out and executed. This may be the beginning of the end but the show is going out in style.

I am writing this in total support of the generally extremely measured reviews for the sixth season of The Sopranos. The show remains the epitomy of taut and engaging drama sharing this accolade with what is still regarded as its older brother, HBO's Six Feet Under; with multi-faceted and inter-woven plot lines that only go further to highlight the shows high calibre. Yes absolutely, it has been slow, but lets not forget so was Season 5 and the events of that season have now come to pass in this one; we have had 1 or 2 of the major outstanding plot lines resolved (Sopranos fans you'll know it when you see it) and absolutely lets wait till the last 8 are aired before passing final judgement on a show that outstrips any of the rubbish on our screens at the moment.
Lets hope the Russian issue is resolved (season 3 Pine Barrens winkwink) as is Dr Melfi's unfortunate encounter on a stairwell but that may be wishful thinking. There may be the possibility of one or two feature length special episodes to finally tie the Sopranos up; just as HBO have decided to do with Deadwood. So lets look forward to the possible final 8 episodes or indeed a final out-with-a-bang special! To all the neophytes get watching from series 1 you dont know what you're mssing out on!! Ciao
A welcome comedown December 1, 2006 23 out of 29 found this review helpful
I cannot believe the reviewers here complaining about series six.
The first complaint, that HBO are ripping off viewers by asking them to pay for only half a series, is simply ludicrous. Previous series were thirteen episodes. There are twelve here. The price at release is roughly the same. How can that possibly be conceived as ripping off the Sopranos-loving public?
The second complaint is even more remarkable. Encapsulated by the Livia-esque phrase, "It's too slow," it shows a lack of faith in (and I think an understanding of) what The Sopranos is about.
The Sopranos is about character, nothing revelatory there, but its approach to character is very much in the tradition of John Cassavetes' independent cinema. The choices The Sopranos creator David Chase has made throughout its run is testament to this.
From its peripheral stars (Peter Bogdanovich, a collaborator on Cassavetes' Opening Night) to its directors (Steve Buscemi, an admirer of Cassavetes) and even its locations (Adriana's club is called The Crazy Horse, after the club owned by Cosmo Vitelli in Cassavetes' The Killng Of A Chinese Bookie)the show is as close in its conception to Gloria and Husbands as it is to Goodfellas. (And don't forget, Cassavetes was a mentor to Scorsese too.) This means what seems 'slow' or 'badly-made' to some people is in fact a much more measured look at mob life. But isn't that why we all fell in love with the Sopranos in the first place?
In short, then, if you want to watch quality television drama, watch The Sopranos. If, on the other hand, you want bright lights, bells and whistles, you're in the wrong part of Amazon, my friend. In which case, try clicking on the TOYS & GAMES tab at the top of this screen and buy the Winnie the Pooh Light Up Cot Mobile instead.
Much better than a kick in the nuts. December 9, 2006 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
I think some of the previous reviewers may have been missing the point. Season 6 of The Sopranos continues in the same vein as previous seasons, for which read it's bloody brilliant. It's true that some previously peripheral characters have more screen time, but this is only a means to an end. This series focuses even more on the effect that being part of "their thing" has on the other facets of the characters, and for this reason any of them could have been used to illustrate it - Vito is as good a choice as any. This theme is inherent throughout the series, with episode 1 being a prime example. As with previous series', the duplicity of their lives is brought to the forefront. For sure it's a slow burner, but would you have it any other way? If you want drama by numbers then buy the Neighbours boxset - if not then buy this and thank me later.
business as usual. November 23, 2006 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Friends of mine have been disapointed by the last couple of seasons of the sopranos because of the lack of a maranzano/castellemare like war between the crime families with the characters hitting the mattresses. but there have been wars in the previous series 5. I personally think the sopranos is as good now as it ever was. It's a show about characters and the characters are so well written and acted in this show.gandolfini and edie falco are superb again in the two main parts. The key to getting the most enjoyment out of this show is not to expect what you've seen movies like goodfellas or casino. This is more godfather than goodfellas in any case. Tony is becoming like a michael corleone figure in the sense that he's become so isolated through his own paranoia and bad behavour. I think that my friends who are disapointed by this season are also going to be disapointed if they're expecting that big gang war in the finale season of this brilliant show, because i think he's gonna die in one of three ways. he's gonna get killed by either camilla, chris or some massive heart attack. i think he'll definately be dead by the end of the show. i hope so anyhow..not sure i could handle seeing him put away by the stinkin' feds...although that is how most of these bosses end their reigns.
