Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Peter Berg's dark comedy about a bachelor party gone horribly awry is highly ambitious in its attempts to satirise suburbia, male bonding, and self-help philosophy, and for the most part it does succeed in hitting its targets with a malicious, misanthropic glee. When five buddies arrive in Las Vegas for some pre-wedding shenanigans, things quickly spiral out of control when the requisite prostitute falls victim to a grisly accident, igniting a spark in an already unstable powder keg of personalities. Following the lead of real estate agent and self-help guy Robert (Christian Slater), the men warily agree on a cover-up and covert desert burial. A couple hours and another corpse later, however, they're already at each other's throats, and their escalating breakdowns threaten to disrupt the highly prized wedding of hard-as-nails bride Laura (a stunning Cameron Diaz). Berg, like most actor-turned-directors (this is The Last Seduction star's filmmaking debut) helms the film with a wildly sliding tone and tends to weigh its strengths heavily on its performers. Slater's psycho turn is by far his most inventive yet (he's more in control than ever before), Diaz effectively mixes sunshine with poison, and Jon Favreau is effective and understated as the hapless bridegroom; the rest of the cast, however, tends to play up the histrionics. Be warned, though: Those expecting a sunny-style There's Something About Mary gross-out comedy will probably be shocked by Berg's take-no-prisoners agenda; this is comedy at its absolute blackest, and no one is spared. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars Very Bad Things - good nasty   July 18, 2005

A strong band of male leads, plus the lovely Diaz, helps lead you into a false sense of security that this movie will follow format Hollywood-style and provide a comfortable ride through a cracking good thriller. Don't be fooled. With fantastic pace, this is none-the-less severely bleak throughout, from a nice shock at the start and a handful more to follow, through grim proceedings to an exhausted ending - this brilliant downer should probably be followed by a comedy! (Recommend something with Bill Murray)

4 out of 5 stars Accidents happen   September 17, 2005

It is a well designed movie with an interesting story. Maybe a little gory in parts. Then again maybe it is supposed to be. Any way it keeps my attention. What was so weird was they keep it in the realm of "this could really happen."

I have run into a few people like the part that Cameron played. I could see this years from now on something like Mystery science theater 3000, with lines like "she got hung up" and "he was stuck for the drinks."

For real, this was a chance for the people like Christian Slater to be their selves. If you do not think this is a good movie, try "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag" with (Joe Pesci, Andy Comeau, Kristy Swanson, Dyan Cannon, and George Hamilton). Alternatively, maybe "Eating Raoul" directed by Paul Bartel.

4 out of 5 stars a great underrated film   April 30, 2007

very bad things is a film written and directed by peter berg and is a deliciously dark and demonic comedy which centres around a group of five friends who embark on a bachelor party to las vegas and get involved in murder which leads to murder after murder to keep the truth hidden, the film seems over the top but is a scenario that can always be called real if you understand my meaning.
christian slater steals the show as an egotistical sales man who unravels a devilish side in front of his friends who more or less take it all in their stride for the greater good, cameron diaz plays the bride to be with more of a desire to get wed than to cry out for help with the death count rolling around ,quick witted and stylish, very bad things is a film for those that enjoy a guilted laugh at the misfortunes of others.

4 out of 5 stars Freindship, marriage......oh and a a little bit of murder!!!   July 30, 2008
I came across this film purely by chance and I'm so pleased that I did, if like me you have a warped/dark sense of humour and find films like Severance and Shallow Grave (basically murderous, yet funny undertones) then I think most people will enjoy this film.

It all starts off innocently enough, 5 males friends going to Las Vegas to gamble, drink and take drugs during a bachelor party they're having, all is going very well when a hooker turns up, then the fun really begins, there's an accident and they decide it's best to cover it up and go about their lives as if nothing has happened.

They make a pact never to tell anyone about the events that have taken place, but life's not that simple and the ensuing events are on the whole very entertaining.

It's best looked at as a thriller that happens to have a good amount of humour as it's far from an out and out comedy, but there's plenty to laugh about and the final scenes are anything but run of the mill to say the least!!

Good performances by most of the cast, especially Christian Slater and Cameron Diaz, I did find Daniel Sterns character more than a little annoying at times though and I cheered when he finally bought it, not nearly soon enough for me, aside from that though a well put together film and just about the right length without outstaying it's welcome, well worth checking out.
