Amazon.co.uk Review The third film in the The Mummy series freshens the franchise up by setting the action in China. There, the discovery of an ancient emperor's elaborate tomb proves a feather in the cap of Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford), a young archaeologist and son of Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, taking over the role from Rachel Weisz). Unfortunately, a curse that turned the emperor (Jet Li) and his army into terra cotta warriors buried for centuries is lifted, and the old guy prepares for world domination by seeking immortality at Shangri La. The O'Connells barely stay a step ahead of him (climbing through the Himalaya mountains with apparent ease), but the action inevitably leads to a showdown between two armies of mummies in a Chinese desert. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has a lot to offer: a supporting cast that includes the elegant Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong, and Liam Cunningham, the unexpected appearance of several Yeti, and a climactic battle sequence that is nightmarishly weird but compelling. On the downside, the charm so desperately sought in romantic relationships, as well as comic turns by John Hannah (as Evelyn's rascal brother), is not only absent but often annoying. Rarely have witty asides in the thick of battle been more unwelcome in a movie. Rob Cohen's direction is largely crisp if sometimes curious (a fight between Fraser and Jet Li keeps varying in speed for some reason), but his vision of Shangri La, in the Hollywood tradition, is certainly attractive. --Tom Keogh

come on - this was never meant to be a great film! November 20, 2008 9 out of 14 found this review helpful
ok - i agree with weak dialogue, bad acting, poor story. but really, this is "The Mummy...etc 3" (4 if u incld. scorpion king). you don't watch it for its punchy, high brow dialogue, nor for it's exciting, mysterous yet gripping story and you certainly don't watch for the classic acting. you watch it for the bright lights and fancy CGI.
it was a joy to watch with some popcorn, as a relaxing 2hours of mindlessness which, for me, is the sole reason for any film like this. whether it's good enough to buy depends on your need of such films, me i got plenty others very much like it...but maybe one day.
Action packed family adventure! September 19, 2008 12 out of 23 found this review helpful
Don't listen to some negative critics - this is an excellent fun film for everyone to watch, unlike many other recent action films that have been released. If you enjoyed the fourth Indiana Jones film, or the original three, then you'll love this too. It's not meant to be realistic or credible, just entertaining and positive. I'm not going to dissect and analyse the film like many do to cause their reviews to seemingly posesss more authority than they really do. I say this instead - watch the film and judge for yourself; don't take my word on it as fact, nor anybody else's!
Deserves to be a big hit! August 31, 2008 7 out of 17 found this review helpful
When I first heard about yet another sequel, I feared the worst, especially since Rachel Wise was not in it and also that Stephen Sommers wasn't writting or directing it, but I can safely say I was worrying about nothing. The format of the film is similar to the other two, except for the fact its's set in China and that the Mummy is a Chinese Emperor. Bredan Fraiser is as good as ever, and Maria Bello sticks out like a sore thumb, but soon settles into the role of Evy and towards the end of the film, Mummy fans will accept her in the role. John Hannah as Johnathan also provides many laugh out loud moments too. The cinema audience certainly enjoyed it. Before seeing the film I was worried that the character of Alex, played by Luke Ford would take more of the centre stage, but Rick O'Connell is still the hero. But saying that, Luke Ford's Alex isn't a bad character (better than Mutt from Indy 4) and in sequels down the line I think Luke Ford will suited to take centre stage if Fraiser was ever to step down. Jet Li also puts in a great performance and is just as good as Arnold Vosloo who played the original Mummy in the first two films. Li's Mummy is just as brutal as Imhotep and is a worthy enemy. The film is full of great action sequences, suspence, many suprises, a few emotional moments, and some great humour. Just what you'd expect in a Mummy film. Although the odd bit at the start of the film are very weak in places, the rest of the film makes up for it. For sure it'l stand out from the other two Mummy films for numerous reasons, but it is safe to say it is just as good,if not better then them. Some people thought some parts of the film were unbelievable, but what do you expect when you go and see a film about a Mummy. I'm sure some fans will "nit pick", especially since Weisz isn't in it and that it isn't set in Eygpt, but it's important to remember that the last film was several years ago now, so thing are bound to change. If it was a film about the rise of Imhotep again I'm sure people would be moan. You just can't win. I've read some reviews that slate the movie, but if you want to see a fun action packed film, this is the one for you. It's also more child friendly compared to The Dark Knight and it's certainly better than the other adventure sequel Indiana Jones 4. A must see film this summer!
WELL I ENJOYED IT November 25, 2008 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
The reviews i have seen on here made me gobsmacked I really enjoyed this film it was action packed with fab effects Seriosly this film is good A slow start maybe but it gets really good at times... I hated the other films But this is to a very high standard

This movie is a sequel of a pop-corn series, made of good action scenes, humour and a plot targeted to teenagers (or "old boys"). This third episode is on the same track: a mummy (chinese this time, with a "perfect for the role" Jet Li)and our heroes (Fraser and Hannah (OK) with a new entry - Bello for the Weisz - bleah !!! the worst thing in the film - and Luke Ford as the "little" O'Connell). Good plot (for this type of movie) good action scenes, good GC. What else ? If you like this type of movies is a good sequel. If not .... change theater....
