Amazon.co.uk Review The feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a satisfying if unspectacular installment in the X-Files series, taking place an unspecified time after the show's nine-year television run. Former agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is now a doctor, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is being hunted by his former agency and living in seclusion. He and Scully are summoned back by a case involving a missing agent and a former priest (Billy Connolly) who claims to be able to see clues to the agent's whereabouts psychically, though his initial search turns up only a severed limb. Don't expect the usual cast of characters; the FBI has completely turned over (except for the George W. Bush portrait), and the only reason Scully and Mulder are back is because agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) remembers his success on similar cases involving the inexplicable. Don't expect the same rogues' gallery either; unlike the previous X-Files feature film, which was inextricably linked to the series' convoluted mythology arc (and served as a bridge between the fifth and sixth seasons), I Want to Believe is a stand-alone piece that makes use of the series' roots in horror/sci-fi and moody Vancouver, B.C., locales. Also unlike the previous film, which was almost self-consciously shot for the big screen, this film is on a smaller scale, like a double-length episode of the series. But it's still a good reminder of the creepy vibe that hooked fans for years. And the relationship between Mulder and Scully? It seems to have resumed pretty much where it left off, at least when you take into account the long period of separation. But stick around for the end-credit sequence to take in all the possibilities for the future. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com

A must buy! October 8, 2008 Forget any bad reviews!
This film did exactly as it should have done with allowing us to see the lifes and relationship of TVs best SC-FI couple 6 years down the road from after the series ended.
Mulder and Scully are back! The story of the film some say wasn't the type of things you would see in the series. Well think again because certain episodes did deal with psychics and neutral paranormal acts such as the episode 'hell money'.
This is a brilliant film which really should satisfy any X-Files fan as well as people who want to see more then a little gore and violence. The film also makes full sense without having to see the whole series!
5/5!!!
Best movie of this summer October 21, 2008 Instead of hollow SFX ladden trite Hollywood is serving us since "Jurassic Park", "X Files: I want to believe" is an excellent character study that deepens the relation between two TV icons, reveals their human dilemmas, and makes the viewer actually THINK about faith, believing, good and evil. Excellent acting, atmospheric photography and suggestive music score only cement the effect. I was not surprised that the audience that made "Dark Knight" a superhit, burried this gem at the box office. Chris Carter does not have anything to be ashamed of here, on the contrary. My deepest respect and gratitude! I understand that this is going to be one of the best Blu-ray packages so far, concernig special features, pitty that FOX only makes region locked Blu-ray discs...
All I wanted to believe it would be... November 26, 2008 Once again we are treated to another extended episode of the X-Files. It's been around 6 years since we saw the finale disapointing episode. That's not being harsh, it's just my own opinion of the last episode being largely cobbled together with clips of this fantastic show's entire run. I was so nervous on my way to the cinema. I wanted so much to see that the show's creator, Chris Carter had got back on the right train and was heading down the right track after the over complicated show's mythology lost it's way during the last few seasons. I wasn't disapointed. This film is awesome. If you have read the books, Ground Zero, Goblins, Whirlwind & the excellent Antibodies that really captured what was best about the series, then you'll get a good idea of the tone of this movie. It too is slow paced, intelligent and critics fail to mention the little fun in jokes too. Billy Connoly is brilliantly cast and the Mulder/Scully relationship is further explored. I loved this film. It took me right back to season 2, my favorite season of the show & and it just felt so authentic. John Doggett & Monica Ryes who later joined the cast and had a few excellent episodes of their own during the last two seasons, should be given their own spin off movie in my opinion, because everything you could hope for was here in this excellent movie except for them. Hint like crazy to your family so they'll buy it you for Christmas (that was a hint to my family in case they read this, lol) enjoy it & don't forget to check out the little extra scene after the credits. I was, and still remain a huge fan of the x-files. Can't wait for the next one. Welcome back Mulder and Scully. We missed you.
It's been a while.. but they're back! November 11, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you haven't seen this yet then I suggest you watch it, as it is very good. Don't listen to the critics who have said this is crap because it isn't. And it doesn't matter if you haven't seen all the seasons of 'The X-Files', as it stands well as a movie on it's own. Obviously there are some elements that reflect back to the series but that's more of an addded bonus to the X-Files fans.
One of the main things I liked about this movie was the way the writers have decided to go more into Mulder and Scully's relationship which they didn't really bother with too much in the last film. I also liked the fact that it stayed very true to the tone of the TV show and is just as intense as a lot of the episodes were.
So whether your an X-Files fan or not this film is definitely worth checking out because it's very intriguing and gets you thinking. And I'm sure it will look really good on blu-ray. I'm curious to see what kind of scenes they will add in to this director's cut of the movie so I will be getting this soon.
Great to see Mulder and Scully together again, shame about the plot September 22, 2008 Having Mulder and Scully back together on screen is an immense thing for any X Files fan and it is great to see them together again.
Whether or not you will like this film will depend on what you watched the show for. If you liked the M/S relationship then I think you'll be pleased, if you like the normal run of the mill episodes then again you will like this. However if you liked the big, mythology episodes that spent loads of money and were full of action then the chances are you'll find this film a tad disappointing.
The film is really an extended episode (the complete opposite of the first film, which took real advantage of the big movie budget) and it kind of trundles along at a mediocre pace. I also think the main plot was a little weak. Another main problem was that as it had been so long since the show was on TV that it now had to appeal to a whole new generation of cinema goers as well as the hardcore fans - something which I don't think it did succesfully.
So, many of you might be surprised that I have given it a 4 star reveiw. Although the film is missing some characters from the series and the plot develops slowly it is a very creepy, clever thriller and I actually enjoyed it. Billy Connolly is OUTSTANDING. I would recommend it to any X Files fan just so they can continue Mulder and Scully's story and look out for all the little references to the series.
