Good, but... November 15, 2008

It's a nice coffee-table book with loads of great photos (just like the previous three books in the series) and this time they're of motorsport's greatest era! (well, I think so...) But, what is it that makes publishers of motorsports books put the prices so high? It's not art. If you can pick up the book for around 40 or 50 pounds, it'd be about right - but not more. To be honest, the photos are great, but there aren't THAT many per year/race, and the text is good but sparse and dosen't go into too much detail (in fact, all the content could maybe be fitted in a book half the size/price - this book has far too many big white spaces/gaps for my liking...)
To summarize, if you're mad about Group C (and many are!), then it's a very worthwhile book - get it. If you're just a general fan of motorsports, then you might feel disappointed, especially if you pay the full price. And if you work for the publisher, next time why not stuff it all in a glossy softcover with half the numbers of pages, let it retail at a third the price, and I think you'll sell maybe ten or twenty times as many copies (that's next time, though, don't reissue this one in that format 'cause I've already forked out for the hardback - although I did get it for much less than the full RRP...at Amazon - shhh!)

Having bought the three companion volumes to this title, as well as Wimpffen's two volume ' Time and Two Seats', I had to buy the fourth.
It has to be written that this is not my favourite volume, although it covers an era I remember well, having been at Le Mans in 1982 when the Porsche 956 came 1st,2nd and 3rd. The pictures within the book are rather similar, but that is what one would expect from this era of sports car racing, Group C etc.
My favorite volume within the series is 'Winged Sports cars and Enduring Innovation' for it's variety of sports car types, and what I would call 'more open pictures'- large pit scenes, and Targa Florio landscapes and the like. Despite my comments, the overall quality is superb. If you own the other volumes, then buy this one as well to compliment the set. I doubt if there will ever be a series of motorsport books of this quality, and covering sports car racing of this era, ever again.
