JESSE JAMES : DOWNBEAT AND BEAUTIFUL April 5, 2008
This is a beautiful, stylish movie. Brad Pitt has finally reached his prime and is perfect in this very still, almost dreamlike vision of a man who is tired of living the life he chose. There's a scene where he looks like a majestic buffalo waiting to die. He looks like the end of an era. I kept thinking of the murder of John Lennon. Of course it's really not the same. Jesse was a vicious murderer as well as a well marketed folk hero. But when Jesse purposely puts his guns down and turns his back I couldn't help thinking of that other assassination. The movie tells us the post Jesse life of Robert Ford was poisoned and doomed. Casey Affleck plays the part of Robert Ford creepily well.

There is a narration which runs throughout the film. This reminded me of the USA PBS documentaries especially the award winning series about the American Civil War. I don't know if this was intentional - it was the only slightly irritating thing about the movie because I could see the join here - but still it helped to contribute to the mood just like it did on PBS.

The slow tempo of the film means you have to be in the mood to watch but if you are you'll find a lot here to enjoy. The muted photography is stunning. It's a long movie and somewhere there is a 4 hour Director's cut. I wonder if that will ever be released...

The HD transfer is excellent and there are some great extras including an excellent documentary about the real Jesse James, his scarred youth and why he became an outlaw. A great package.
