Naruto The Movie2:Legend Of The Stone of Gelel December 2, 2008 I really enjoyed this animated movie, the Japanese are animated masters, and the work on this movie,is breath taking. Three gifted youngsters,Naruto,Shikamaru and Sakura are delivering a pet to its master in a remote village. They are attacked by a mysterious young man,Temujin attacks them. This leads to a spetacular fight between Temujin and Naruto,Naruto is able to duplicate images of himself, both young men are badly injured, then picked up by a passing carvan of people. Shikamaru, enters a passing fortress where he sees the horrific sight of young men, held,in life size capsules, kept alive to fight. It envolves that Teujin has been taught to fight by his master,to fight for Utopia,a land without war,but all is not as it seems....... I found the character Naruto, annoying to start with but the main point of the film is for Naruto,to grow and to find out there is more to life than simply fighting. I do approve of the 12 rating as young children, would find the two female baddie sparticularly frightening. A great movie to watch on a Saturday afternoon, great escapist stuff.
Review from someone new to the story December 11, 2008 This is a fantastic film, full of lots of moral dialogue and reasoning which I'm sure anyone would enjoy adult or child. It would be a great gift from any parent to their child though because of all the moral dialogue.
I'm unfamiliar with the TV series or the earlier film but the film opens with a pitched battle being fought between a clan of ninjas and their champions who have particular astounding abilities like the characters in Street Fighter or any similar video game. I loved the character who manipulated a sort of puppet on strings and used deception to defeat his opponents, probably better than the other magician characters.
It then cuts to Naruto and his friends, Naruto is a sort of stereotypical impetuous, excitable youth who's eager to do battle at the drop of a hat. They encounter a sort of super soldier do battle and then they encounter the forces that this super soldier guy is serving.
There ensues a lot of battles with sinister characters, werewolves and vampires and the sinister nature of their opposition becomes more and more obvious.
There's a lot of back and forth narration about means and ends, utopia, mania, corruption and betrayal. I loved Naruto's contrasting of utopia and friendship and a lot of the clear sighted moral judgement, for instance doing the opposite of what you're saying. I really do think there's no use for a dream that sacrifices your friends.
The animation is great, there's lots of action and great fight sequences, although it isnt like a lot of western/european animations in which none of the characters are hurt or die.
I think that having seen this I'll probably look for the other films and DVDs, I recommend it to anyone pretty much but I think that anyone who was a fan of the old Sega Shinobi games or similar genres in gaming, books, comics or movies would like this series too.
Another Decent (fan-aimed) Naruto Movie October 17, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The hidden leaf ninjas one and only blonde knucklehead ninja is back for a second full length feature. Naruto: The Legend of the Stone of Gelel. It is apparently set after episode 160 of the TV anime series.
The story begins with Naruto, Sakura and Shikimaru on a mission to return a missing ferret to it's owner; a pretty easy mission. However, things are never that simple in Naruto. Before long the yound Ninjas are attacked by a warrior wearing some kind of knights armour. This mysterious knight is called Temujin and he serves a master who wants to bring about a utopia, and to do this, he needs the stone of Gelel. A powerful but dangerous treasure that can grants the bearer tremendous power. However, the previous clan who harboured the stone have sealed it away in hopes that it will never be used again. So, Naruto and the gang, along with Gaara and Kankuro from the sand village must protect the stone from being recovered by those who want to misuse it's power. This is a plot that, while not really original, is stil acceptabe enough for a Naruto movie and obvious cash in from the series success.
The movie has plenty of great action scenes and everything to keep a Naruto junkie happy from the funny comedic bits, to the emotional perserverence speeches that Naruto likes to give. I must say that the action scenes look superb and they are directed very well. The action alone is enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. However, some of the names for the Jutsu' are just ridiculous. For example Kankuro's 'secret black move iron maiden 2', it's a cool move, but I laughed out loud when he said that. As can be expected from a Naruto movie/cash in, there isn't a lot of characterisation at all, and pretty much all of the new characters created for this movie are rubbish. The only character I remember is Temujin, who is a kind of replacement for Sasuke, but he's still really forgettable. Other characters are Temujin's master (can't remember his name) and some old dude who looks after the ferret.
I was a bit diappointed that this movie doesn't include many of the characters from the series. One of the highlights of the Naruto series has always been the plethora of likeable characters. Favourites such as Rock Lee, Neji Hyuga, Kakashi and Jiraiya are all absent from this movie. I understand that there may not have been enough screen time to include all these characters in the story, but even a cameo would have been nice. However, you do get to see a certain raven haired, emo ninja, but even that's in a flashback, and he doesn't have any speaking lines. However, I was ecstatic to see my favourite Naruto character, Shikimaru playing a leading role this time round.
The animation in the Naruto series has always been of a high quality, and this movie is no excepton. Accompanied with a bigger budget, this second installation looks simply gorgeous. There are also some nice CGI effects thrown in that go quite well with the traditional 2D animation. So this movie actually looks like a motion picture rather than just an overlong regular episode.
Unlike the first Naruto movie, Legend of the stone of Gelels soundtrack is completeley original. It's not bad but there are a couple of catchy tunes, escpecially the song right at the end, which is a cool Jrock song. I watched the english language dub for this movie, and as usual it was really good. I particularly love Gaara's voice actor Liam O'brien, whos portrayal of the character is brilliant in my opinion, and the voice actress for Naruto, Maile Flanigan is superb. Love it or hate it, the Naruto english dub is one of the reasons I love Naruto so much. The Japanese language is still amazing but I tend to watch anime in english.
If you have never seen Naruto before, I strongly recommend you buy series 1 as it's less than 15 (at the time of writing this), and the series is way better. I'd say this movie is for the dedicated fans only as it is no where near the best Naruto DVD release, but it is still a worthy addition to your collection.
For fans of the series December 10, 2008 I gave this to my son to review as he is a fan of Anime and has seen the Naruto cartoon series.
There's not much more to say that hasn't already been said in these reviews other than that, as a fan fo the franchise, he enjoyed the movie but does agree that you need to be familiar with the series otherwise it will be difficult to appreciate what is going on a lot of the time. The TV series is better though.
In particular the animation and action scenes in this film are very good.
Naruto can save the day! December 18, 2008 This is quite a long Manga cartoon, and there is a lot going on, the scenery is certainly up to scratch, which plenty of action and visual effects.
It's a good story, but one that has been told a few times before in other books/films etc. How good intentions can be twisted by an evil person with a hidden agenda!
My only real complaint is Naruto, he can be a little grating, but I'm a little older so maybe not the target audience even though I did thoroughly enjoyed this film.
Well worth buying for any fan of Manga or Naruto.
