Journalism like it's supposed to be March 5, 2007 79 out of 85 found this review helpful
Don't be deterred by the bombastic-sounding title of this DVD compilation and the somewhat cheesy-looking packaging: This is first-rate journalism like it is supposed to be. Although I had certainly known of John Pilger and seen his books at the bookstore, I hadn't taken the time to sit down and watch his television documentary work in any great depth. This DVD compilation was, in essence, my introduction to Pilger's video work and I tended to view it with a critical eye. After watching all four disks, I have to say I'm impressed.
Sure, Pilger has his own opinion on things (don't we all?) and he makes his views known clearly in these reports, backed up by solid facts. But in the end, the real test for a journalist is whether he or she seeks honest answers from those in power and does not shy away from investigating sensitive, even dangerous, areas. To my mind, Pilger's work passes the test. I even found myself standing up after particular reports on this DVD and applauding Pilger's efforts to get at the truth. Every single report stands on its own high quality -- quality that we no longer get (or even expect, tragically) in the mainstream corporate-dominated mass media.
For me, Pilger's reports on Cambodia, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Burma and the "war on terror" were most impressive. It's a shame that Pilger's South Africa reportage was not included in this compilation, as I hear it is equally good. In any case, this DVD set was money well-spent and I'll watch these reports again and again in the future. For better or worse, the best journalistic reporting, obviously, does not take place in mainstream news corporations anymore (if it ever did); the best journalistic work is today being done by independents around the world like John Pilger. Buy this DVD and find out what you're *really* missing in those watered-down news reports we watch and listen to every day.
They don't make TV like this anymore December 23, 2006 93 out of 101 found this review helpful
These films make me despair, for many reasons: why don't we see decent honest reporting on UK television any more. Why is there no room in the TV schedule for world current affairs (Unreported World on Channel 4 excepted). Why is it so wrong to have someone expressing a personal opinion about world affairs on TV and why is the world still like this.
Anyway, programs like John Pilger's documentaries do not seem to be made any more, which is all the more reason why you should buy this collection. At least 5 of these films made me cry. Pilger's conviction and belief in basic human rights is apparent in all these films (except the Coca-Cola vs Pepsi one which is a little flippant) another review criticized his lack of humour but I feel his tone is perfect. We all SHOULD be outraged by what the governments we have elected are doing in our name, satire and humour seem to be the popular way of criticizing governments but when they are facilitating the murder of innocent civilians, often children, it would be inappropriate to make jokes, and anyway, where has this satirical "bremner bird fortune" approach got us...no where. Enough rage, a tip, buy this, you won't regret it, another tip, the first film, Year Zero - about Cambodia is the best so save it until last, Pilger's rage at the way the world community was sitting back and doing nothing while Cambodians starved is clear, it's probably the most disturbing film I have ever seen. This DVD collection should be watched by everyone on the planet. Thankyou Mr Pilger for trying.
should be compulsory viewing in schools July 21, 2007 37 out of 40 found this review helpful
I saw most of these when they were broadcast on ITV in the 70's/80's (anybody remember when ITV used to screen material other than pop idol and x factor?), they made me really angry then and most of them make me angry again on rewatching. Everything about this box set is top class except perhaps the title but I'll forgive that, Pilger's docu about the arms trade is worth the price on it's own. Watch them, get angry and do something about it because history just repeats itself, look at Iraq today and the threats toward Hugo Chaves and others in Latin America.
10 STARS!! Americans must see these! Not available in US! May 9, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Here's why every American MUST see these videos: We have been fed sheer make-believe from our government and media for several lifetimes now. What is being done around the world by U.S. government agencies, U.S. military forces, and U.S. corporate henchmen-slash-politicians is not only illegal, but destructive, immoral, and anti-everything we think the U.S. stands for. When I stumbled onto America's real-time foreign policy, I was shocked... angry... incredulous... WE are the world's most dangerous entity. WE have disrupted more decent democracies, world-wide, than any regime in history--for our own benefit, often for the sheer glory of conquest. We seek exclusive control of raw materials like oil, or most importantly, military footholds. Nicaragua, Vietnam, Palestine, Cambodia, Iraq, Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, Palestine, Chile, Panama, El Salvador... just a partial list of countries John Pilger addresses in these high-quality DVDs.
This 4-disc set includes 12 unforgettable documentaries and a lively Q&A session from 2006. Use them with the Internet--check the facts, get updates, weep anew at the sorrows being inflicted upon our world in the name of the New American Empire. (Also see The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic (Blowback Trilogy)
We are *not* a benign land of democracy-loving bureaucrats bent on spreading peace and prosperity-- but a true threat to any sovereign nation who will not bow to our interests on our terms. We intend to keep, and to expand as quickly as possible, our imperial reach. We do not obey International Law, but no nation or media outlet has the nerve to call us to task. We do not observe the Geneva Conventions, but no one dares stand up against The Empire, because we dominate all the world financial markets and hold the U.N. hostage with our monetary and military support.
Can you imagine Germany, or Ecuador, or South Korea, or Japan, having large, permanent military installations on, or near, American soil? Yet that is what we've done in over 70 nations. We operate over 800 military bases worldwide-- far from the probing eyes of the American taxpayer.
Only a few months ago, I was a staunch conservative, minding my own business, ignorant of what I now know to be the truth of my government. I can never go back. It doesn't matter who gets elected-- the problem is too big to vote out. It is truly a system-wide failure of our present form of government. It has become a monster, and the monster is armed and dangerous. Our government has the most powerful WMDs ever created-- and our government is the only one to have actually used them. This monster is quietly taking away all our Constitutional freedoms... and what is left of our money and non-government jobs.
Pilger is Awesome...but it's not just the United States. May 11, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I love Pilger, but I think his focus is a little narrow. The evils being done by the US have been well aided and abetted by most other European intelligence agencies. And the ones who haven't helped have certainly looked the other way, taking the Quaker-like free ride while we run wild across the globe securing our (and consequently their) commercial and military interests in unstable areas. And the Soviets have committed just as many atrocities for as long as that chess game lasted. Make no mistake, the rulers of nations live by jungle law, and we, the abiding majority, are so many sheep being herded by our voracious masters, who have only gotten better at hiding their fangs behind the gleaming smile of consumerism. Basically, if you are not living in a commune cut off from the rest of civilization (like the Amish), then you (and your tax/consumer dollars) are part of the problem; but hopefully one that a large meteor or super volcano will be attending to soon. :)
