Amazon.co.uk Review You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

Enjoyable, mindless, and very funny. Downey Jr. was surprisingly brilliant. Little plot or real substance but who cares, just fun hokum and the best film I've seen for a while. Recommended.
Great film September 12, 2008 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
I was a fan of the Iron Man comic books in the 1960's (wish I still had them) but had since grown up! When I saw that a film had been made, I just had to see it and wasn't disappointed. Downey is very believable as Tony Stark & the action scenes are fantastic. Great film, I look forward to Iron Man 2 (and hopefully 3 & 4!!). The DVD release is on my wish list already.
Excellent September 29, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Iron Man is a great film, in fact it is my personal favourite of 2008 just beating out the Dark Knight for me, and far superior to Indy 4.
Robert Downey Jr really does make the film, and his portrayal of Tony Stark is right on the money, credit must also go to Jon Favreau (Who never seems to get a mention) for great direction that never gets silly or insults the intelligence of the audience (Like so many superhero films do).
Good job guys, can't wait for the second one!!!
Even if you're not a Comic Book fan this is great November 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A really good film from start to finish. Even if you are not a comic book fan this is a great film.
Don't take it too seriously, just watch it for what it is.
Unexpectedly good! August 15, 2008 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
Well I wasn't sure what to expect from this film, as bit of an unknown Marvel character to me, and also had Downey Jnr. in it. However the film was action packed, had a good story and was very enjoyable! The only few things that dragged were the multiple suit building montages (there were 3!), and having to look at Gwyneth "Wooden" Paltrow.
