Amazon.co.uk Review
Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and! Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sw! eeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly ! as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Hennery Jones ... Junior, part time teacher   October 25, 2008

Wow it is all there, the formula the action the mystery and the frillier actors. If that is not enough we have new actors of great caliber and some new one liners to repeat to friends and family. Everything that made the original Indiana Jones films has been intensified.

Karen Allen's character is just as cut and feisty as ever. It takes a couple of double takes to realize that Col. Dr. Irina Spalko is the Academy Award wining Cate Blanchett in a Natasha outfit. I could go on but it is time for you to see for your self.

My favorite scene is where Indy is being showered down, hosed off and scrubbed. Watch closely as he is being scrubbed in a private part of his anatomy and has to make a broom adjustment.
--------------------------------------
It is the height of the Cold War. The Ruskies are looking for an upper hand. Naturally they look for the super natural or inter-dimensional physic advantage. And of course they get Dr. Hennery Jones Jr. (much older Harrison Ford) to unwittingly play into their hands. With the help of a young sidekick Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) he must find a crystal skull in an effort to free his kidnapped associate Henry Oxley (John Hurt). In the process he has to navigate between two independent women Col. Dr. Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) and Marion Ravenswood (Karen Allen.)

Watch the movie to find out the mystery of the scull and if Indy, oops Hennery Jones Jr. will succeed or stick his fedora in it. Bring your ant spray.

I have to admit I waited for Blu-ray so I can not compare to non Blu-ray versions.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and a fantastic Blu ray   November 10, 2008

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is another classic Indy adventure which stands up extremely well to the first three movies in the series. Those who were upset by what they saw as an 'unrealistic ending' obviously have never seen the ending to an Indiana Jones film! Put simply, this is classic Indiana Jones.
Now onto the Blu ray disc itself - the image is crystal clear and the sound is superb. There are also numerous making-ofs and trailers. The only thing that would have made this release even better would have been a commentary track by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
All in all, this is a great movie and if you are a true Indiana Jones fan, you won't be disappointed by this.

5 out of 5 stars Jolly Jones!   November 19, 2008

Excellent film. Even better watched a second time.

Why cant aliens be in a Indiana Jones film? Who says not?

Lucas based the original 3 on 1930s melodramas. But here he based it on 50s b-movie alien/monster flicks. It works so well.

The blu ray transfer is one of the best ive seen and it sounds fantastic also.

Sit back, relax and enjoy where the adventure takes you. Ace.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Film - Plot Suffers Terribly   September 22, 2008

Let me be very fair by stating that this film is beautifully recreated in Blu-Ray with all the special effects and sound seemingly amplified! It's a beauty!

However, the fourth installment of "Indiana Jones" is a disappointment. The entrance scene with Indiana and his fedora in a silhouette is a nice start, but the film's plot quickly disintegrates into implausibility. Now, I do understand the Saturday `Flash Gordon' type stories where credibility is stretched for entertainment, but this film stretches and breaks. Marion is back (Karen Allen) and her entrance is so very welcome, but she soon disappears into a one-dimensional character. Indiana's new side-kick (Shia LaBeouf) misses his mark and only annoys when constantly slicking back his hair (thanks to George Lucas). John Hurt is such a great actor, it hurts to see him delegated to barely speaking, but his face tells a lot more than the dialogue around him. Cate Blanchett is thoroughly believable as the commie villain, but her character is also `dumbed-down'.

The action scenes are not as inventive as previous Indiana Jones films (remember the first 15 minutes of "Temple of Doom" from the dance number, "Anything Goes" to jumping out a three-story building to a car chase to jumping out of a plane in a raft to sliding down a snow peaked glacier to dropping off a cliff into a wild raging river and on and on...?) There is nothing like that here. There is a floating car with our heroes that goes over numerous gigantic waterfalls and no one gets hurt (only a little wet). The car chase scene on the cliff never gets too exciting and to see LaBeouf swinging on vines ala Tarzan is just TOO much to have the audience believe. Do I need to add the scene where Indy survives a nuclear blast by hiding in a refrigerator that is blown a mile away? And finally, I apologize, but the "Close Encounters" ending is fairly dramatic, but with all that torrential water gushing, mountains collapsing and the winds hurling around the characters, why don't their clothes or hair move at all? It is the most egregious CGI overlook since George Lucas ("Return Of The Jedi") had Mark Hamill fly through the redwood forest on the air-scooters and the ferns didn't move at all.

Like I said, I tried to be fair. It is still a great film compared to most that is out there. But when Lucas and Spielberg set the bar SO high with previous works, they can't top themselves and that hurts - kind of like growing up and realizing your heroes are really ordinary people. But it's still worth watching (or owning), if only for its historical significance and the beautifully filmed scenery (in Blu-Ray!!!) Get the first three in Blu-Ray as well. The difference will make the films seem like new!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic if you can get over the lack of story   October 14, 2008

While the film's story misses the mark, its visuals prove that Spielberg hasn't lost his touch as a director. Visually, the Blu-ray transfer remains consistently high-quality - vibrant colours, strong detail, little additional grain or distortion. There is a small amount of noticeable digitization, and while the detail never gets quite a sharp as one might like, the CG sequences - such as the jungle and waterfall scenes, or any moment in the last fifteen minutes - come across the best. They're well-integrated into the image, clear and crisp without being overly so.

The Dolby TruHD track is a high-volume, larger-than-life experience. The complex, layered sound design of this film is an ideal showcase for this kind of technology. With sound effects provided by audio wizard Ben Burtt and that familiar, soaring score by John Williams, you want to hear every single element with clarity, and you do. There's a lot of movement in the field from all sides, so gunshots seem to zoom right past you and explosions erupt from all around. The essential car chases and fights are lively, but not too crowded. The dialogue is clear throughout the action and if the standard-def transfer was near-perfect, this transfer is downright perfection.

This Blu-ray release offers the same set of extras provided on the two-disc standard-def version, though each of the carry-overs are presented here in HD.

If there's one word to describe this collection of features it would be thorough. Every step of the filmmaking process has been documented, from the origin of the idea to post production, with a plethora of interviews and footage to illustrate the journey. Although Spielberg remains a staunch holdout among directors who refuse to participate in audio commentary, it's hard to imagine that it would give any further insight beyond what is already provided in the supplemental material.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may not have lived up to the hype, but it was clearly a labour of love for all involved, and this release shows all the work that went into making it. It's just too bad the same amount of work didn't go into the writing.
