5 out of 5 stars Naturally Funny   May 20, 2008

The whole basis of Gavin and Stacey is very simple but the script, characters and comic timing make it a classic. Like all good comedies every character has a part to play and each is so realistic that you feel that you know them from somewhere. Above all Rob Brydon is pure comic genius.

We're seeing great things from BBC3 - it seems a testing ground for Aunty Beeb - if it works - then Prime Time, if not, it will never been screened to a wider audience again!!

Thankfully, Gavin and Stacey works. On many levels.

In a simular style to Australia's brilliant 'Kath and Kim' series, Gavin and Stacey is a refreshing look at a down to earth romance.

Chav maybe, funny definately - this series manages to capture both genuine laughs and care and concern about the lovable characters portrayed by this brilliant cast.

Enough with the review...just enjoy this wonderful DVD!!!

Excellent series of shows. It is great to see a genuinely new program with fresh and very inventive ideas. The situations, characters, dialogue and acting is first rate and very, very funny. I cannot recommend this enough. Enjoy !!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply sensational   November 9, 2007

This is possibly the best new comedy series in years. One of very few TV shows to have made me literally double up with laughter.

The superb writing and acting means we have many great characters and sub-plots to enjoy and arguably we have one of the greatest comedy creations of all time, namely 'Nessa' as portrayed by the wonderful Ruth Jones (who also plays the lovely 'Mags' in Saxondale and co-writes this show with James Corden).

Nessa is a 'hard' Barry girl who has seen it all before and has the t-shirt. She gets many 'killer' lines, all delivered in that deadpan Barry accent. The story about being wined and dined by Dodi Al Fayed is nothing short of hysterical. I laughed so much I thought I'd done some damage. Yet, behind the hard drinking, hard bonking tough exterior we are allowed glimpses of the vulnerable girl within, particularly in the last episode of the series which leaves us wanting more.

Ms Jones is beginning to appear more and more on our sets and is one of the best actresses we have! Having previously appeared in Fat Friends, Little Britain, Nighty Night and Saxondale, 'Nessa' has to be her best character to date.

She plays opposite James Corden as Smithy, the wonderful 'best mate' to Gavin. His 'relationship' with Nessa provides an ongoing source of laughter throughout the series and their playing of the hotel room scene (and it's aftermath) is masterly.

Among the other characters, Rob Brydon gives a 'stand out' performance as Stacey's uncle. His reading of the message from her deceased father en route to her wedding moved me from laughter to tears and back again. "Do you want me to read it in his voice? With the lisp and everything"? Priceless. It is a sequence which ranks up there with Del-Boy's famous speech when Raquel gives birth to Damien!

The two eponymous characters play it fairly 'straight' leaving the mayhem to those around them. The two families, one typically Welsh, the other typically 'Essex' are finely drawn and superbly played by the likes of the incomparable Alison Steadman, Larry lamb and the aforementioned Mr Brydon.

This is the kind of show you need to watch several times to catch all the humour it contains. It isn't until the final episode we notice the significance of the surnames of the families (West and Shipman) and there are lots more clever sub-plots and asides to keep us on our toes!

One cannot help but wonder if series two will be called 'Nessa and Smithy'? "Cowing lush Omlette"!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant programmes   March 31, 2008

I think this is wonderful entertainment. Sends up TV, esp. sitcoms, then it becomes a sitcom in glorious awfulness. Has this fantastic dark side easy to miss[ e.g. series 2 Nessa's hand washing, or opening champagne and celebrating a dismembered body news story]. The characters are magically wonderful whilst being blatantly mundane [ oven gloves] . At its best, up there with the Simpsons; and with the Office, though strikes more notes a la Mike Leigh. Takes a few wonderful risks like Little Britain without losing the plot too much! Love it - the cast amazing and the performances brilliant. Obviously a team on a roll on both sides of the camera.
A must buy.
