Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Amazing film, amazing quality   October 12, 2008

I have the American version that I bought the other week becuase I couldn't wait to get it!
The Blu Ray version is very a very good transfer and possibly one of the best out there. This is paramounts biggest release and its worth the wait.
The extras are really good too and unlike some blu ray's the extras are mostly shot in HD too.
It is also BD live meaning updates and interactive quizes etc are in there too.
The best part is the box art, pull off the swleeve and theres the man under the mask, epic!

5 out of 5 stars A great adaptation and a very good film to boot!   August 29, 2008

So many comic book films are created with the studios forcing it into a lower certificate by cutting various scenes out. This was shown clearly with the Daredevil Directors Cut being so much darker than the original that it was an entirely new film!

Thankfully this movie did not suffer from that fate. Clearly the director has been given a free reign on the movie and as such he has created an authentic Iron Man, and I am pleased that Robert Downey Jr has nailed the character so well. The comedy is refreshing and the action is superb but the story is also excellent, something that every good movie needs.

Oh, and watch the scene after the credits.....interesting!

5 out of 5 stars You've got to have heart, Tony Stark does/did/does   October 11, 2008

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) military/industrial weapons mogul just finished demonstrating his newest rocket in the Middle East, when he is purloined by ruthless locals with dirty faces and a penchant for power. Who could be behind the dastardly deed? Of course everyone knows it is the last person you would suspect as in any good mystery.

Well as luck would have it, in Starks efforts to escape he invents the fundamental technology for, you guessed it, Ironman. In the process he inadvertently gives the world a new weapon. How can he correct his faux pax?

In his quest for the answers he solicits the help of his very efficient and devoted assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow.)

For those enthralled in the Ironman comics, nothing has changed; except maybe the storyline. O.K the era in which how superhero exists. Well maybe a tad more gratuities sex. O.K. I guess I could go on for a few more paragraphs but you get the picture that we can not rely on the comic book character to be anymore than an inspiration for this movie.

For people that are more music orientated, among the popular background songs they included the original theme from the animated series.

It has all the formula and characters for today's super hero movies. By not making it a period piece we get to incorporate all the latest technology and social attitudes.

Only saw the Blu-Ray version. Had the standard extras and flexibility. I am pretty sure future versions will add more insight or at least more footage.

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment   November 7, 2008

As a fan of superhero movies, I have been a happy man recently. The quality of these movies has increased massively over the past few years. The Dark Knight, Spiderman and Hulk movies are great improvements on previous efforts.... can Iron Man keep up... OH YES! Watched this last night on my brand new 1080p TV and was blown away with the picture quality... amazing. Then you have the film itself. Sets up the character brilliantly, I really like Stark the playboy, and you are really convinced with his epiphany. With good performances from all the actors, great special effects and CGI that is not obvious, this made for a very entertaining 2 hours. Even sets you up for an exciting sequel..... a must buy for super hero movie fans, especially on Blu Ray

5 out of 5 stars The perfect blockbuster...   November 3, 2008

and the perfect comic book movie. Iron man had a hard job this summer a little known Marvel character in his first movie, released in a summer of great comic book movies (The Dark Knight, The incredible Hulk and Hellboy 2 The Golden Army}for anyone who knows the character of Tony Stark{Iron man)I dont need to explain how great the casting of Robert Downey jnr was, he simply is tony stark, jnr has a great dryness to his humour and sarcasm that really works with this character. The rest of the cast include Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard and gwyneth Paltrow. The plot of the movie is fairly straightforward Tony Stark ceo of weapons manufacturer Stark Industries, travels to a warzone to sell his latest creation while there he gets abducted by hostiles and during the attack is severly injured, the hostiles try to force stark to build his latest weapon for there use, Stark instead designs a suit strong enough to break him out of his prison. fairly straightforward on paper however this summer you would be hard pressed to find 2 hours of fun like this, you genuinly can sense the directors passion for this character and how much work has gone into translating this faithfully from comic book to silver screen, as is made very evident through the superb special features. if you like comic book movies or intelligent blockbusters you must have this cant recommend this enough
