Amazon.co.uk Review
Michael Haneke is a modern master, which his spellbinding films Cache and The Piano Teacher proved to an international audience. When it came time for a Hollywood remake of his ultra-disturbing 1997 picture Funny Games, who better than Haneke himself to helm the new version? And indeed, the second Funny Games bears the impeccable sense of control and technique that the Austrian version had: it is a horrifyingly precise account of a family terrorized by two psychopathic young thugs at a vacation home. For anyone who's already seen the '97 film, this new one--a nearly shot-by-shot transcription of the original--will seem superfluous, no matter how impressive the performances of Naomi Watts and Tim Roth are. (Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet are suitably creepy as their menacers, too.) For newbies, the movie might be as infuriating and thought-provoking as Haneke intends it to be. That's because Funny Games is an intellectual game itself, a direct rebuke to the audience that gobbles up gratuitous violence and cynical manipulation. Haneke sets up our expectations, and then refuses to provide the conventional catharsis... or the conventional anything. All of this was pretty bracing in the first go-round, but feels like gamesmanship in the remake. Even if you dig what Haneke's up to, this is a brutal movie-watching experience. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars Milk An Audience - Make The Same Film Twice   June 16, 2008

The Remake Machine - unstoppable, fearless, without shame. Hollywood and it's ilk don't care about remaking a movie to improve / expound upon it's original premise, as once was the case (even DePalma's "Scarface" was a revelation in some ways). Nowadays, it's all about the all-conquering, devalued dollar. Rob Zombie to remake Carpenter's "Halloween"? No problem! The man looks a bit creepy and made some rubbish of his own anyway. "RoboCop"? Ha, Verhoeven's movie wasn't definitive at all, he didn't have his eye on the Balance Sheet (the fool!). It's the celluloid apocalypse, and we're all invited with our vastly-inflated ticket prices.

But here's a new twist on this tale : A much-acclaimed European director remakes his own movie for an American "No Subtitles" audience. Not so odd at first glance, it's been done before. But here's the plug : make it EXACTLY the same - every shot, every angle, every line of dialogue, everything. Hence, if you've seen the original Austrian version, you don't need to view this in any way, shape or form (unless you're a big fan of Naomi Watts or Tim Roth I suppose). Go and watch something new instead, or Haneke's "Cache".

Oh, one redeeming feature - Any director who includes Naked City's "Bonehead" in a mise-en-scene is a genius in my book. So, "Funny Games US" then - It's not for everyone, only Americans.

2 out of 5 stars A good first half ruined by the second   August 6, 2008

Naomi Watts and Tim Roth star in this shot-for-shot remake of an Austrian film of the same name. It is about a family who go to their lake house to relax and play a bit of golf when two young men come into their house and terrorise them, playing games to prolong the torture and terror of their deaths.

I'd not seen the original but had heard good things about it, so was looking forward to this after strong recommendations from my friends and it started off as a really good film with plenty of suspense and I was genuinely scared for the family but the second half really did drag on and became so ridiculous and dull that it really was a chore to get to the end.

What annoyed me with this film was that Tim Roth's character's kid was being beaten and his wife was being made to strip etc and Tim Roth just sat there like a lemon and didn't say or try to do anything. Then there were scenes where the camera was just positioned in one spot for 5 minutes or so at a time with literally nothing happening. To top it all off there was quite an unexpected and mad twist near the end and one of the killers then grabs the remote control off the sofa and rewinds the film and changes it! I was just thinking WTF!!??

To me it seems that the writer and director had a good idea which was working well to start with, then ran out of ideas so dragged it out then chose an ending and decided to change it, but just kept them both in the same film!

Personally, I wouldn't bother with this at all. Watch a Hitchcock like Psycho if you want a proper thriller. This is not even worth the rent.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst films ever?   August 1, 2008

This film is terrible. The story is OK, a film about two mad kids who put a family through a terrible ordeal, however when the victims kill one of them, the abductors pick up the TV remote and rewind the story to prevent the vicim shooting his partner!! What is this film about, it's neither serious nor randomly twisted, the story is weak, and the roles are poorly written.

We've all seen some bad films right? Ones you find boring, or have a bad story? This is the first film that actualy made me angry to have wated my time watching.

Renting or buying would be a waste of money.
