Amazon.co.uk Review
As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianist's Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Love it love love it.   July 18, 2008

Ever since seeing the trailer back in March I had been buzzing to see this film, and I have to say I wasn't disappionted. Being a huge James McAvoy fan, naturally I wanted the film to be good but I seriously feared that it would just be another pointless action film that was all about the action without paying any attention to giving it a purpose (we've all seen films like that.)

Wanted for me, mends the reputaion of modern action films. Yes it's got over the top, jaw dropping stunts but this film is supposed to be in your face and it's not for the faint hearted. And what's better is the fact that they have given the characters some dept and there is a solid plot line. The characters are relatable and you find yourself genuinly attached to them.
So many times I have watched action films and I find myself not caring whether the characters survive, as long as the stunt looks good. But this film had me on the edge of my seat, fearing for the characters safety.

It's got action, comedy, great characters, a killer cast and a great script. If you don't like this film, you'll be hard pushed to find an action film that meets your needs.

This cannot be released fast enough.

Rediculous, OTT, silly, but Fun, Fun, Fun, and the only film I've watched for a long time where people around me, WOW'ed and made audible noises of surprise at the incredilbe special effects and action. Worth a look, if you like films for the adrenalin and to forget a couple of hours of ordinary life. Excellent for what is is, an all-action, roller coaster ride of a movie!

For a start the special effects are amazing. It has a fantastic twist in both the middle and end. It certainly gets your adrenaline pumping, what with the fast paced action throughout and spectacular music. James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie execute their roles magnificently, and i think in context the plot follows well. I didn't know what to expect when i saw the trailer initially, but it's well worth the time.
Amazing film.
5/5

5 out of 5 stars Taking control   October 28, 2008

this is a feature film adaptation of a six issue comic mini series about wesley gisbon, an ordinary office worker who suddenly finds he's the son of the world's greatest assassin, and gets the chance to follow in his father's footsteps and escape from his previous dull and aimless existence.

those who are familiar with the comic will find quite a few differences here, in that the super villain fraternity of the comic are in the movie a group of assassins who keep in order in the world by assassinating those who threaten world stability. and the wesley of the film is a rather nicer character than the wesley of the comic, and doesnt do some of the things the latter does.

also starring angelina jolie as super assassin the fox, and morgan freeman as sloane, the leader of the fraternity. the former has a role here that suits her style right down to the ground - cool and dangerous. and the latter gets a nicely morally ambiguous character with an edge and turns in an excellent performance.

the central theme of the comic survives into the movie. as the blurb on the dvd puts it, wesley finds that the only thing harder than taking the lives of others is having the courage to take control of your own. and that's what wanted is about. taking control of your life.

in the meantime you get lots of action set pieces.

as you can see from the ratings here this is one of those films you will probably either love or hate, and there seems to be little ground. personally, I loved it. this was down to stylish and excellent direction from russian director timur bebmambektov, who shoots all the set pieces with great gusto and some excellent stylistic touches. but he never lets the latter get in the way of the former.

in addition to the good work from the two aforementioned hollywood big names james mcavoy as wesley also does very well here, taking his character from loser to man in control, and doing a very good american accent.

this is a good guilty pleasure of a movie, not least because wesley gets to live his life the way we can but dream about, and it's always nice to have a guilty pleasure of a film in your collection. strong language and lots of shooting mean it's an eighteen certificate and strictly for adults only.

the dvd is a bit sparse, though. a single disc, with english and italian language tracks and english italian and portugese subtitles [not what it says on the box so be aware] the only extras are two seven minute features, one about the filming of a car chase scene and one about one of the main sets used in the film. both run roughly seven minutes and are quite good.if short.

there are lots of extras though to be found on the wanted dvd website, and the dvd comes with a booklet that contains a reprint of the first issue of the comic, and a code to input on the website that will unlock these extras for you. Putting extras onto the web rather than the dvd is a trend I'm not entirely keen on, but that's all a matter of opinion.

the dvd gets a five star rating though, purely on the basis of my opinion of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Wanted: More of this   October 30, 2008

IF IF IF you can embrace the idea of an accountant being plucked from his work-pen to become the world's greatest assassin just so that he can avenge the murder of his father (deep breath), then this is entertainment in its purest form. Very much a marmite film, my friends and I absolutely loved it. The soundtrack is great, it really complements the style and pace of the movie. Take a deep breath and jump in, you'll have a ball - this is what cinema should be: big, bold and brilliantly entertaining.
