Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
There are more cases to solve, and there?s a lot more entertainment to enjoy as the supposedly-retired crime-fighting team of Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong knuckle down to business once more. And as they do so, New Tricks proves that if you want consistent quality, you need to turn to the old pros.

For it?s the outstanding cast, clearly having a ball here, that make New Tricks quite so much fun. This fourth series sees the trio of mismatched detectives--once more working for Amanda Redman--solving crimes and generating many laughs as they do so. Their methods are inevitably more towards the old school, and this inevitably brings them into conflict with the generation that followed them, but this just adds to the fun. Throw in a host of welcome famous faces in cameo roles, and it feels like a piece of television where good storytelling and strong production values sit above gimmicks and whizzbang special effects.

The pace of New Tricks may not immediately endear it to the CSI generation, but for many, that?s part of the appeal. That, and the quality of writing and the chance to enjoy good actors playing the kind of good roles that you?d thought had long since dried up. More of the same please, BBC. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Newest of New Tricks   March 24, 2008

From the fabulous opening episode in series 1, to the final episode in this series, New Tricks never fails to entertain, and impress, and make us laugh.

New Tricks stars the beautiful Amanda Redman as Sandra Pullman and TV veterans James Bolam as Jack Halford, Dennis Waterman as Gerry Standing and the great Alun Armstrong as Brian Lane. They are UCOS - the unsolved crimes unit of Scotland Yard. This is the coming together of three ex coppers and a female detective, and the problems they each bring along with them. Sandra is battling with the loss of her policeman father when she was young, Jack is still grieving over losing his beloved wife, Gerry is juggling with his finances and his ex wives, and Brian is an obsessive perfectionist and recovering alcoholic with a tendency to fly off the rails at any given moment. Together they combine their years of experience which they have gained by going against the grain. New Tricks is a combination of British televisions' greatest detective dramas from past and present, with comedic scenarios and light-heartedness fused with the drama of crime and the consequences it brings.
Performances are as you'd expect from the talents of Bolam, Armstrong, Redman and Waterman, with lots of familiar cameos from stars such as Gareth Hunt, Timothy West, Roy Hudd, George Cole, Linda Bellingham, June Whitfield, Keith Allen, to name but a few. With such a well assembled cast, great writing and the legendary BBC production values, New Tricks never takes itself too seriously, and that's a good thing. The marriage of comedy and crime have made this series one to watch, and if you never have done, you're never too old to start now. The evidence is here.

Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars New Tricks series 4 - in fact all New Tricks   August 1, 2007

Absolutely superb - the old adage of "there may be snow on the hills but there's fire in the hearth" truly fits this programme. Amongst the actors there is no "weak link" and the storylines often make you laugh and cry within moments of each other. Why the series never received an award I will never fathom - Life on Mars has been lauded many times but for me [an others]New Tricks is far better.

Please BBC lets have many more series in the future and how about an award or two!

5 out of 5 stars The dogs may be old, but this show is for young and old alike   May 4, 2008

This show keeps me coming back week after week for several reasons: The writing is first class, its witty, intelligent and often moving, and of course always interesting. The cast is fantastic; Redman, Waterman, Armstrong and Bollam play off each other so well, and really look as though they are having the time of their lives. Another fantastic season that should not be missed. Im 24, and rate this as one of my alltime favourite programmes on TV.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!!   July 10, 2008

If I were to make a list of my all time favourite tv-shows, New Tricks would deff make that list! I love it! I think the writing is superb, the stories both fun and sometimes dramatic but the best thing about this show is the main cast. You can see that they love to work together and it doesnt feel like an act - they feel like a real team and everyone has their own place. Im glad New Tricks is finally back on air and I cant wait for Series 4 to be released....the only thing to complain about when it comes to the DVDs is the extra material which usually is nothing or when it is, its not that good. Id love out-takes and audio commentary!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   June 18, 2008

this is by far the best series on television. it is brilliantly writen, and the acting and chemistry between the characters is a joy. not only is it a great crime drama, but the comedy that is scattered throughout each episode is fantastic. it has everything and with a second to none cast with the stunning Amanda Redmond, it cannot fail. I wish i could give it 100 stars, 5 just doesn't seem enough.
