Product Description Owen Wilson, Paul Newman
Amazon.co.uk There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who is directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. --Doug Thomas

Looks wonderful! March 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Cars looks amazing in HD. From the individual (car) spectators in the stadium long shots (unseen on DVD) to the sparkling pearlescent paint of the (occasional) cars to the fabulous colour palette throughout it's all great. The plot is fun and yes it's predictable and corny but if you're 10 you'll barely have seen it before. This is still a work that adults can appreciate though, a lot of the humour is very sophisticated. The Blu-Ray transfer is from a digital master so is 100% clean and perfect. Note that the UK release has the somewhat lacking Jeremy Clarkson performance as 'Lightning McQueen's' agent. The USA release has a better performance from an American actor and that's the one that I have because the USA Blu-Ray release is not region coded.
Ka-chow! Upscale to THIS if you can, DVD! May 30, 2008 Apparently, even with a render-farm four times more powerful that Pixar's previous film The Incredibles at their disposal, when the animators and artists processed the final frames (and we're talking about 24 per second of movie!), it took a staggering 17 hours to lock down each individual one. It shows... Cars is simply an unbelievably beautiful looking movie, and this Blu Ray transfer picks up every reflection, fleck of metallic paint, grain of sand and sliver of rockface with immaculate detail.
The film itself is typical of Pixar, so I won't dwell on it here - generally, each features a character with selfish traits who gets yanked out of the routine of their comfort zone, meets a load of oddballs along the way and finally learns that family and/or friends are what really matters. In this case, it's racecar Lightning McQueen (named for late Pixar animator Glenn McQueen, and not Steve McQueen as is generally believed), who is forced to do community service in the fading town of Radiator Springs after losing his way to California along Route 66.
Voice acting is as always superb, and the jokes rarely misfire (a knowing series of gags both by and at the expense of Pixar regular John Ratzenberger during the end credits is especially funny). The only outright failure is a UK exclusive anyway, with McQueen's agent (voiced by comedy actor Jeremy Piven in the US version) here being handed over to Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson, who plays the part like a third rate Alan Partridge with a bizarre slice of Murray Walker thrown in. Lucky he has his carefully-baited TV shows and newspaper work to fall back on - acting is no career option for him.
As far as Blu Ray goes, this is a test disc for your system. Aside from the level of detail on show, colours are strong and contrast perfect. A good selection of extras mixes activities for kids with short featurettes on the making of the film (don't believe any reviews that say they're all in HD though - they aren't!) My favourite is one of the briefest - an excerpt from the classic short Boundin', but with Mater as the Jackalope, Lightning as the Sheep and Guido as the Gophers. You suspect it may have been a unused part of the end montage as the cast watch Toy Car Story, Monster Trucks Inc. etc. Regardless, it's brilliant, as it this package in general.
High Octane Animation on a Sublime Blu-ray Disc June 9, 2008 From the Disney Pixar camp and Directed by John Lasseter Cars enters the silver screen having a lot to live up to in the shadow of A Bug's Life, Toy Story, Monster's Inc etc. Enter Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson voiceover) a pedigree racing car champion who is a little bit on the immature side and loses his way from his Transporter Truck only to find a little town once famous now run down on route 66 named Radiator Springs....it is there that Mcqueen does damage to the local property only to find himself facing Community Service under the supervision of a Hilarious pick up truck in need of some WD40 called Mator who has a catching chuckle and an infectious likeable character....The story goes on that maybe theres more to life than racing and Lightning McQueen gets all the lessons in life he needs from the friendly automobiles he comes across in Radiator Springs....there are some hilarious moments such as the Tractor Tipping that McQueen and Mator get up to in the fields at night and the great one liners from Mator who steals the show...Cars shines onto Blu-ray with absolutely the best picture quality on Blu-ray I have seen to date and that's without any exaggeration this is unbelieveable quality and should set the reference quality standard for Blu-ray as both the cars themselves and the scenery background are sublime...Sound is up there with the best too. For Great Family entertainment on the best picture and sound money can buy then this is an absolute no brainer....
Fires on all cylinders June 11, 2008 Probably the best image quality I have seen on blu-ray, hold on, make that on anything! The sound is clean, dynamic and well controlled. The storyline is great too, plenty of humour with reflections on the real world. A great film, especially well presented on blu-ray. Maybe I could take away 1/2 a star for limited extras, but as I think the film is worth 6 stars by itself that is not an issue! Most def one of the few blu-rays I will actually buy rather than just rent
