Amazon.co.uk Review Pulling few punches and garnering its fair share of headlines as a result, The Tudors is a controversial, yet compelling period piece, that dramatically tells the story of the early years of King Henry VIII. Not for nothing though has it attracted its fair share of awards attention. For The Tudors is a complex drama, and not one to simplify its storylines. The young Henry, for instance, is exploring his muddled romances and his insecurities, against the challenges his kingdom is facing. It's a plateful for him to deal with, and in the hands of a superb performance from Jonathan Rhys Meyers--a real revelation in the role--as the young Henry, it's all vividly and skillfully knitted together. But The Tudors isn't just about its central character, for there's a terrific supporting cast at work too. Sam Neill's Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northam's Thomas More and Natalie Dormer's Ann Boleyn are just some who earn plaudits here. Behind the camera there's the pen of Elizabeth writer Michael Hirst at work, and he too deserves much credit, clearly getting his teeth into the fascinating subject matter. The Tudors is, undoubtedly, a graphic production, and earns its 15 certificate comfortably. It's also been knocked for the liberties it takes with its history when putting its story across, with some justification. But it's also most certainly terrific television, mixing in high production values with strong performances. In short, the ten episodes here will simply have you thirsting for the next series. Not before you've rewatched season one a few times, though... --Jon Foster

FANTASTIC!!!! August 20, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
this BBC drama is absolutely fantastic!!!. full of murder, sex and betrayal, just as you would expect from the Tudor dynasty.some people may moan that some historical details are not correct, but who CARES!!, when youve got the absolutely Gorgeous Henry Clavill as Charles Brandon and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who must surely be THE SEXIEST MAN alive, as Henry( lucky Anne Boleyn!!!).Have watched these over and over, and cant wait for series 2 to come out on dvd aswell. im a great fan of anything Tudor and if you are too, you Must get this, as you Wont be dissapointed!!!!
Beware: Highly Addictive! August 16, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
As a history student people assume I will be constantly annoyed by the historical inaccuracies that feature relatively frequently throughout this series but I honestly couldn't care less! The casting has been well done (I doubted Jonathon Rhys-Meyers at first but he becomes an excellent Henry VIII in my opinion) and the seductive and dramatic plot had me hooked from the first episode. Can't wait for Season 2!
GUTTED THAT I HAVE TO WAIT TILL 2008 FOR SEASON 2! September 22, 2007 45 out of 53 found this review helpful
I won't go into specific plotlines since that could take all day. However, if you realize while watching it that they have taken a bit creative license with some of the facts, then you will enjoy it much better. The acting is SUPERB. I really wasn't sure about the casting of Rhys Meyers, a very average Irish actor I have only seen in "Bend it Like Beckham". But he quickly won me over. He truly commands the screen, is petulant when it calls for it and really makes you beleive he is Henry. The actress who plays Queen Katherine is also brilliant. The sets and costumes are lush and beautiful. You almost feel like you were transported back 500 years ago! The storyline moves along very quickly and at the end of the season, really left me wanting more - I was completely hooked and cannot wait till 08 to see season 2. There are however, factual errors in the script that I won't detail here - if you didn't notice them while watching, then I won't disappoint you by pointing them out now. If you enjoy period movies and television, then you will ADORE the Tudors.
Great Historical Romp October 12, 2007 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Although there are some blatant historical inaccuracies and errors, the entire series is a fantastical romp through one of England's favourite periods, characters and costumes. The series is a feast for the eyes and keeps moving fast enough through events and players at the king's court to keep you occupied so that an hour feels like minutes.
Great acting by Jonathan Rhys-Myers impersonating Henry as the handsome young king he was; ruthless, sporty, attractive and cunning. Excellent support too by the rest of the cast.
Like the series 'Rome' this is popular myth (re)making, but great entertainment with lots of eye-candy...
Bugger history December 14, 2007 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Having watched the entire first series and enjoyed it immensely, I find myself out of patience with those reviewers who can see nothing better to do than carp at this well-written, well-acted, and well-directed drama. Of course it departs from history! Name me a single history play by Shakespeare that wasn't a serious departure from history. There are no 'mistakes' in The Tudors: the writer/researchers had ample access to history books, but were bent on providing entertainment, not simply re-telling the 'facts'. And for all that, they get many details right: the wrestling with the king of France, the exact number of Protestant martyrs whom More burned at the stake, and, despite our Portuguese protester, the brief marriage of a sister of Henry's to a king of Portugal). If you want history and nothing but history, there are dozens, nay hundreds of studies of Tudor history. I am hoping that the title may be taken seriously, and that the series will continue at this pace well into the reign of Elizabeth.
