Amazon.co.uk The Invasion deserves a second chance on DVD. This ambitious sci-fi thriller represents a flawed yet worthy attempt to bring contemporary vitality to Jack Finney's classic science fiction novel, previously filmed as Don Siegel's 1956 classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Philip Kaufman's suspenseful 1978 remake, and Abel Ferrara's highly underrated Body Snatchers from 1994. And while those earlier films are superior in many respects, The Invasion is not without strengths of its own, particularly for those who prefer action and suspense. Unfortunately these strengths were compromised by the unpredictable misfortunes of production: Original director Oliver Hirschbiegel (hired on the strength of Downfall) was eventually replaced by James McTiegue (V for Vendetta), and the Wachowski Brothers (of Matrix trilogy fame) added high-octane action sequences to the original screenplay by David Kajganich. Perhaps the movie had a curse on it (star Nicole Kidman was almost seriously injured in a stunt-car mishap during last-minute re-shoots), but it's really just a matter of disparate ingredients that don't always fit together, resulting in a slick-looking film that can't decide if it's a sci-fi mystery, action thriller, or political allegory. It tries too hard to be all things at once. Despite this, Kidman rises to the occasion with a solid performance as Carol, a Washington, D.C. psychiatrist who's convinced (with the help of costars Daniel Craig and Jeffrey Wright) that a flu-like virus is spreading throughout the population, its alien spores turning victims into soulless "pod people"... only in this case without the pods. The idea is that you'll be fine if you don't fall asleep, and especially if you don't let anyone sneeze or vomit on you. (There's a lot of vomiting; don't say you weren't warned.) With a crashing space shuttle to deliver the alien threat, cute tyke Jackson Bond as Carol's threatened son, and a nod to Kaufman's film with a small role for Veronica Cartwright, The Invasion will surely fare better on DVD than it did in theaters. If nothing else, it proves the timeless relevance of Finney's original premise, which continues to inspire a multitude of variations. --Jeff Shannon

Really tense and creepy! March 7, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I watched this on movie night with my hubby. We were both sat upright throughout and were totally engrossed all the way. It's yet another re-make of the classic Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers, and it stands very well on it's own merit.
Kidman and Craig were perfectly cast in their roles. She plays a psychiatrist and he is a doctor. When one of her patients tells her that her husband isn't himself anymore, Kidman prescribes more medication. Afterwards though she can't help noticing little changes in everyone around her too. When her estranged husband calls her out of the blue and asks to see their son alarm bells start ringing but she drops her son off anyway.
Jeremy Northam plays the ex-husband and is exeptionally creepy. He was 'infected' at the start of the film and wants nothing more than to convert the rest of the population, including his son and ex-wife. Kidman is soon on the run looking for her son and finds herself in a living nightmare. Along the way she becomes infected too and has to stay awake or else she will transform.
My only gripe about the film was that the ending seemed a little rushed for my liking, although it had the turn out that you would hope for.

I remember watching the original Invasion of the body snatchers years ago, so couldnt wait to get this movie, i wasnt disappointed neither, thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, what a great actress Nicole is, she plays the part perfectly. Thumbs up from me.
Atmospheric thriller January 2, 2008 22 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is a good old-fashioned lights out huddled on the sofa creepy sci-fi thriller flick It seems like Hollywood stopped making these in the 70's or 80's, leaving sci-fi series like X-Files to fill in the gaps.
Craig and Kidman are perfectly cast and make a great team. The premise may not be original but it's still effective. It may be too scary for the kids but it's perfect for grown-ups who want to watch a scary movie on a Friday night.
Great looking sci-fi flick with some truly tense moments. Recommended.
Interesting new take on the Body Snatchers theme March 22, 2008 11 out of 16 found this review helpful
To start:
* Why the heck would someone like Nicole Kidman even think of starring in a film like this? She did the artistic masterpiece Dogville, but at least that had some brains!
* What's up with the film's ending? It's like The Blair Witch Project- It's just building up to an amazing climax... but then it just, ends.
* I know it's a new look at the Body Snatchers theme and everything, but at what point in any films or books was there any mention of people getting 'infected', and puking up green slime all over the place?
There is a simple answer to all of these questions and more: HOLLYWOOD REMAKE!
That said, but this is still a pretty damn good movie. The plot has been described in numerous other reviews, so I needn't bother. Overall, the acting is good enough, the direction is decent enough, it stars Nicole Kidman, and it admittedly does build a good, scary atmosphere.
Worth your evening and a few quid, just don't watch it expecting miracles.
A DECENT FILM November 29, 2007 10 out of 19 found this review helpful
I came to the conclusion that many regular film goers saw the same thing in The Invasion that I did...it was okay period. It was a good flick, entertaining, worthwhile and by the time you get out to the car you're thinking about what's on TV later that night...it doesn't stick with you. It has no especially powerful moments or performances, but while you're watching it you're not disappointed. Critics trash talked the film like it was the worst thing of the year and it's not by a long shot. In fact it's a fun night at the movies without having to think about why something is going on. If you think too hard about The Invasion then yes you'll walk out hating it. The film is wrought with plot holes and even a bit of a non-conforming time line made even more confusing by an unnecessary jumble of chronological plot points. Flash backs and flash forwards and things that don't help the story and stick out like crazy. They also seem to rush through several things to make sure they get to the main story and tie it up in a neat little 2 hour window (or a little less.) Everything with The Invasion seems to happen so quickly and you're trying to keep up but then once you get to the heart of the film it keeps you riveted to your seat.
Nicole Kidman is a terrific actress, and very versatile and she has done her share of playing the 'scream queen' type role having performed in other thriller/horrors such as the superb "The Others" and "Dead Calm" and she definitely has this ability. She is beautiful and almost too exotic looking to play a down to earth type person but you do become enthralled in her adventure against these zombie type beings. Daniel Craig is terrific as her best friend/boyfriend Ben Driscoll. He almost seemed like he purposely holding back a better performance to not overshadow Kidman but the script for both of them was pretty weak. The two of them together make a great team given a better story. Young newcomer Jackson Bond really holds his own with Craig and Kidman as Kidman's son Oliver. He has a lot of screen time and really does a terrific job and I'm sure he'll be an up and coming star. Jeremy Northam is Kidman's ex-husband who is one of the first to be infected being a CDC (Center for Disease Control) agent. I would say that his performance is a little bland but that seems like an ironic statement given that he is supposed to be an emotionless zombie like alien but it didn't really impress me and he was forgettable compared to the other cast members.
The film has great potential (obviously being a remake of a classic.) I have not seen the original film nor it's 2nd remake but I would like to in hopes that it might fill in some of the gaps sadly left by this installment. It seemed like they rushed to get to what they thought they could really sink their teeth into. The eerie world where everyone is being converted and the normal are forced to act without emotion should be a lot more powerful but it loses something...I just don't know what. The disease spreads very quickly and the heroes (Craig and Kidman) just seem to catch on to and accept what's going on far too fast. Basically it could have been dragged out over a trilogy (not that I would recommended that for this film.) Still sci-fi fans might get a kick out of this latest remake and even a movie goer won't be disappointed but it won't likely make any of your top ten lists this year or ever. 7/10
