5 out of 5 stars Last Legion   April 18, 2008

I think this is a great 'fantasy' film. I say this as some are nit picking about the lack of historical fact. If it followed facts there would be no film at all, thats the whole point of the film, a good yarn!
And a damn good one at that. Gladiator is another example, not much fact but a great film. As for realism, Romulas, Vortkin, the Goths, the Eastern Empire, Hadrians Wall, all there for some realism. And a great stirring sound track.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Film   May 16, 2008

Does a film have to be historically correct to be good? Or can a film still succeed with not many real facts in it? The Last Legion is about the fall of Rome and the birth of a legend. It starts of with a young boy Romulus. He is destined to be the ruler of Rome. But once he becomes Emperor his city crumbles under the invasion of the Goths. He's then forced to run with only bodyguards as protection to Britain. There are quite a few great battle scenes. The history of the movie may be suspect but in this case that doesn't really matter. It's there for entertainment not education. So while it is historically incorrect it's still an epic film for anyone over 12 to watch.

If you like to compare accurate historical events with this type of film then you probably won't like or enjoy it. But on the other hand if you like a simple action adventure film then go for it. I'm not a great fan of Colin Firth but he did a good job in this and I liked it all the way through to the end. Enjoyable story with action and adventure. What more could you want from a film? Just enjoy it for what it is. Entertaining!

I thought this film was excellent. I am not a lover of blood thirsty, sword thrashing films but I found this one extremely entertaining because they kept the barbarism to a minimum, although I had difficulty in watching Abrosinus, Ben Kingsley's character being branded.

Maybe it wasn't historically accurate, but who cares, I watch a film to be entertained not educated.

Excellent story telling and I loved the cast Colin Firth was terrific as the Commander, Aurelius, as was Ben Kingsley as Abrosinus and the stunningly beautiful Aishwarya Rai was perfect as Mira. Good performances from Thomas Sangster as Romulus Augustus Cesear, but I do think he could have picked up his sword a little earlier to help Aurelius out at the end, but then films have their set time frame don't they?
