Amazon.co.uk Review As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in I, Robot. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; I, Robot, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks. Also featuring Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, and James Cromwell. --Bret Fetzer

A hit in a genre where ther are so many misses! December 1, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Surprisingly good and definitely true to the spirit, concerns and theories of Asimov. Spirited performances all round, CGI that's there for a reason and good cinematography makes this a bit of a hit for me. It's also prompted me to dig out a pile of old Asimovs for my 14 year old. For once Hollywood has not dumbed down its source material.
Excellent entertainment September 23, 2004 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
The story in summary: It's the year 2035 and robots are an everyday household item, everyone trusts and relies on them except one paranoid detective (Will Smith) who is investigating what he believes is a crime committed by a robot; this is unheard of as robots aren't built to be allowed to harm humans. Smith has difficulty turning anyone to his way of thinking and finds himself being drawn into something far more sinister. The film is amazingly shot, beautiful vast city skylines reminiscent of Blade Runner set the scene and mood brilliantly, visually it's stunning. The robots themselves are fantastic and don't seem out of place walking down the street with humans, a fine achievement as this can so often let a film down. The graphics people have done a great job with the robots themselves they look good and move beautifully, Sunny the star robot really has a human edge but still reminded me a little of Casper the ghost. Whilst there probably is a moral buried in here somewhere, it's not immediate and the film is just huge entertainment and action the whole way through - the car scene is fantastic. This is a big budget production and there's the now familiar product placement, JVC, Audi & Converse All Star all feature this time around, but that's the norm these days. Will Smith is excellent as the cynical lead and plays his part to perfection. Great escapism, and you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it.

Pre-order NOW! You know you'll love it! August 27, 2004 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This film is fantastic, not only does it have some of the best special effects that i have seen in a film to date, it also has a great plot with a brilliant cast, Will Smith providing his usual style of humour throughout. As with all the previous FOX Collector's Two Disc Edition (X-Men for example) you know the special features are going to be good. Definitely one to put on the christmas list this year.
Fun Sci-Fi Mystery March 1, 2005 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
In the not too distant future, robots are a normal part of life, doing menial tasks and taking care of humans. With built in rules to make sure they never become dangerous, everyone is happy.Except Del Spooner. A police detective, he has an innate distrust of machines. So when his friend and the inventor of robots turns up dead, Del immediately suspects a robot. When no one takes him seriously, he turns to Susan Calvin for help. But is he correct? If so, can he prove the truth and saves humans? This is a fun movie. It's meant to entertain, and it does it in spades. The plot is cleaver with some nice clues thrown in to keep the viewer engaged. And the car chases and action scenes keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm not a super big Will Smith fan, mainly because of the movies he's chosen to do in the past. But here he did a great job playing a detective with something to prove even when no one else believes him. This movies sets out to be nothing more then an escapist thrill ride. And it succeeds in spades. Perfect for a couple hours of entertainment.
