The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralysed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne. In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

I know this is not out yet on Blu-Ray but i have watched the first 5 mins
of Dark Knight on Blu-Ray as it is on the special features on my Batman Begins Blu-Ray disc and judging by that this will be probably a must own title.
Honestly the opening scene of Dark Knight on Blu Ray on a big high definition TV with the sound cranked up is a jaw dropping experience!

I appreciate the comments of the person who said not to write reviews without first having seen the actual blu ray transfer of the movie but I feel I must offer some interesting information for all of you prospective pre-orderers.
It has recently been confirmed that the Blu ray Edition of the Dark Knight will include extras such as: a Gotham Uncovered documentary, featurettes (Batman Tech: The Incredible Gadgets and Tools, Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight), 6 episodes of Gotham Cable's Premier News Program, galleries (The Joker Cards, Concept Art, Poster Art, Production Stills), trailers and TV spots.
HOWEVER: In addition to the standard 2 disc edition there will also be a limited release which includes a scale model of the Bat pod from the film (Batmans motorbike). This edition will include a stand for the bike which also doubles as the housing for the blu ray discs.
So if you are interested in this, just wait until amazon gets details and lists the limited edition for pre-order.

Would'nt it be nice to See the actual Blu-ray 2 disc special with all its extras before reviewing it.
The Blu-ray review is meant to be how the edition compares negatively or positively towards Cinema Version or DVD Version.

A film with which the franchise will never beat September 26, 2008

I've only one negative thing to say about this film (sorry its actually two):
1) 1 Batmans voice - if this was consistant between the two films I wouldnt raise it but it went from one to an exteeme
2) 2 The Jokers final scenes - this was messed with in the UK, no question, and without spoiling it for those that have not seen the film yet you will spot it a mile off.
However points 1 & 2 included its a brilliant film no question and deserves the full pointage.
If I'm being honest I really disliked Heath Ledger prior to this film and thought he was a very wooden actor even in Broke Back.
His role in this film is without a doubt the best performance of any actor / character in the last 5 years - easy....
I dont want to deject anything away from the other actors / writers / directors / producers of this film in any way shape or form... this is the ultimate batman film ever and I love it even more for Heaths role.. not because he's dead (yes this is very sad) and I feel sorry for him & his family / friends but not over the film because he made this film & its lead villan one of the best films for decades to come.
Just the best...

This isn't a review as such, because I'm pretty much in tune with what everyone else has said (it's stunning. I agree!). Instead here's some useful info about the Dark Knight which might be handy if you're going to buy / rent and watch it at home.
--This is a gruelling, compelling, forceful film. It compacts several plot threads which would have played out over a year or more in comics and crams them into a couple of hours. The result leaves you a bit battered by the end of the action. We came out feeling the same sorta way after Saving Private Ryan.
--You don't get a whole lot of Batman / Bale in the focus of the film. There are so many strong characters crammed into it (Heath Ledger / Joker of course, but Dark Knight also makes a lot of the supporting cast like Harvey Dent, Lieutenant Gordon, Lucius Fox, etc) that Batman is almost taken for granted. He is in the core of the movie throughout, but the interesting stuff is going on with the others...
--Young kids might get freaked out. There is a fair bit of sustained psychological scary stuff here. Without giving too much away, the Joker represents chaos, and the threats and dangers which can rip apart anyone, at any time. The Police and even the Batman can't be everywhere, and they can't save everyone, every time. It's probably a metaphor for how American society perceives the threat of terroism (or something), but the effect is over two hours of non-stop psycho aggression.
--The BatBike is way cool.
--If you didn't see Batman Begins, then watch it first. You'll understand a lot more about why the Batman reacts in certain ways if you're up to speed on his original motivation (and who the heck all the supporting characters are)
--If you haven't see Gotham Knights, the amine series, then definitely watch them too. This series fills in some of the gaps between Begins and Dark Knight, and although you don't need to have seen it to understand the new film, the background is useful and gets you in the groove.
--Don't watch the Dark Knight expecting to see a filmed version of Frank Miller's awesome Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. That's a whole different animal: a different future for a different batman.
--Dark Knight isn't set in Tim Burton's fabulous faery-gothic Gotham. It's not make-believe. It's grounded in an authentic modern American city which makes it all the more startling.
--Heath Ledger really did produce a stand-out performance. When he's on screen you can't look anywhere else; it's like watching a train crash happen in front of you.
Every incarnation of the Batman (be it in print or on the screen) is as valid as any other. This has to be the second most adult version I've seen, and it tackles plenty of serious issues about the nature of chaos and fear; what the true nature of heroism is, and how we create our own worst enemy. You could argue that if it had been made somewhat less complex and a little bit shorter then a tighter, even more striking film might have been created... but it's rare for any comic adaptation to be as good as this, so I really won't complain.
