It’s a very welcome return for The Tudors in this terrific second season of the show, which picks up once more on the earlier years in the reign of King Henry VIII. And once again, it pulls few punches, by turns violent, passionate and dramatic. It’s absolutely not family viewing, but it does grab you by the collar and simply not let up. What’s more, The Tudors is once again powered by arguably a career-defining performance by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. He’s quite superb as the young King, capturing the obsession of Henry VIII in his quest for a male heir to the throne. He’s matched by a strong supporting cast, too, particularly Natalie Dormer’s Anne Boleyn. And with lavish production values grounding the show, it’s a sumptuous, surprisingly edgy slice of historical drama. That said, once again, the show takes some liberties with history, and inevitably attracts attention for doing so. But those liberties are taken for a reason. The drama is never less than compelling, and it’s worth cutting The Tudors some slack for the decisions it makes. After all, the end result is genuinely gripping and engaging television, and come the final credits on the ten episodes here, chances are you’ll be thirsting for more. For even though you may know how the story ultimately ends, The Tudors is ample proof that the journey there is really what matters. --Jon Foster

I think a lot of people are missing the point when it comes to Micheal Hirst's take on Tudor England. Eyes have been rolling (as opposed to heads...), and it seems like everyone's set to condemn it purely because Jonathan Rhys Meyers didn't fatten up for the role, nor don a ginger beard and codpiece. Woe!
So there are some historical inaccuracies, and yes, there's a LOT of nudity - but no one's requesting the immediate burning of all the many biographies and history books concering the period, and asking the shelves to be replaced with DVDs of the sexed up version. This is a television programme! And I'm certain that this series has forced a fair few to get down to their library and look up what the tudors were really like.
Isn't anyone fed up of the cliche'd fat man with a fake orange beard, take on Henry VIII? This is a fresh new take on old school history for a new generation. Stunning sets, beautiful locations, a fairly 'educational' but entertaining script, great costumes and a young cast. Let's start seeing the tudors for what it is - enjoyable programming :)

GREAT SHOW AND CAST, CANT WAY FOR SEASON 3.
NATALIE DORMER IS SUBERB AS QUEEN ANNE BOLEYN. EVEN THOUGH THE SHOW IS NOT HISTORICALLY ACCURATE THE ACTING IS GREAT AND VERY ENTERTAINING. AND THE SHOW SEEMS TO BE DOING VERY WELL ALL AROUND THE WORLD!.

This is a wonderful series, which has had me and my husband gripped and waiting eagerly for each chapter to air. The actors play their parts well and were chosen for their acting skills not the accuracy of their looks. The story as with all dramas is an interpretation of the events that occurred in Henrys time. Jonathan Rhys Myers has been excellent as Henry-cant wait for the next box set.

Thank god for Friday nights and The Tudors!!! They are just sooooooo gorgeous to watch - or would you rather look at a red faced puffing Ray Winstone? - I think not! I LOVE it and so do all of my "30 something" girlfriends!It is a sumptuous production ; the costumes, jewellery, hair/wigs, makeup, locations, computer imagery etc .I admit it is funny in parts whether meaning to be or not and historically wide of the mark but....it is pure bodice ripping escapism for an hour- and just what is needed after a long week being a serious professional person, a mum , a wife and a grown up!!
I do hope they consider doing a series on the Plantagenets!!!

This series is a fine mixture of history & romance. One should be careful to approach the episodes with a view to "story" rather than accuracy. These programmes have had a bad press in some cases; a thing which I think is entirely unjustified. A scene in Episode 5, for example, was thought by some to be cheap; on the contrary, the sequence is tender & beautiful. It happens when King Henry, whilst riding in the forest, encounters a peasant girl. This is handled with great delicacy; the way in which the viewer is placed in the king`s position, and made to experience the awe his majesty feels when the beauty of the girl is revealed, is wonderful to behold; the marvellous music also helps.
King Henry has just suffered a great disappointment with Queen Anne`s failure to present him with a son. Then, quite unexpectedly, he meets this lovely lass, "sees a tender flower & plucks it" a point which seems to have escaped some critics.
There is one other subtle aspect of this sequence: the use of horses. When Henry enquires as to the girl`s name, there is the whinny of a horse. Later, when the king says, "Come with me", again, a horse`s neigh is heard. It has been said that horses stand for intense desires & instincts & are associated with the libido, referring to a sense of inner power, which also means sexual power; is this perhaps what is being symbolized here? For we are aware of King Henry`s intentions,plus his wish to assert his "kingly" power. Also, the alteration of the girl`s emotions, from inital fear to when she discovers the joy of love is very well managed. A series of programmes well worth watching.
