The Star Wars saga will continue in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a videogame developed by LucasArts, which casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Paired with the powerful Havok Physics™ system, these new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of anything in the environment so that everything reacts exactly like it should - wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, plants on the planet Felucia bend like plants on the planet Felucia would, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioural-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behaviour on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

Game Features:
  • During the period between Episodes III and IV, players hunt Jedi in the role of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice.
  • Unleash and upgrade the Secret Apprentice's four core Force powers - Force push, grip, repulse and lightning - throughout the course of the game, and combine them for ultra-destructive, never-before-seen combos.
  • Examples of unleashing the Force in ways never thought possible:
    • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force push enemies into walls - he'll Force push enemies through walls.
    • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force grip foes to throw them aside - he'll Force grip them in midair, zap them with lightning, then drop them to the ground to explode like a bomb.
  • In addition to new adversaries created just for the game, such as fugitive Jedi and Force-sensitive Felucians, players will also confront and associate with familiar faces from the Star Wars films, including Darth Vader.
  • Visit locations such as Episode III's Wookiee home world Kashyyyk and the floral Felucia, the junk planet Raxus Prime, plus an Imperial TIE fighter construction facility.
  • The Force Unleashed is LucasArts' first internally developed title for next-generation consoles, and it represents the first in-game collaboration of talents and technology between LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic, two companies now finally under one roof at the new Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio district.
  • The Force Unleashed debuts Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and euphoria behavioural simulation from NaturalMotion Ltd.
  • LucasArts is preparing an unprecedented promotional effort around the launch of The Force Unleashed, encompassing a full line of toys and game-based action figures from Hasbro, as well as a full publishing program from Dark Horse, Del Rey and Palace Press.

Meet the Cast
The Star Wars Saga will continue in 2008 with LucasArts' biggest-ever video game event. Set during the "dark times" between Episodes III and IV, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed portrays the previously untold story of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice -- and now you can put a face to that mysterious character as well as the major supporting cast members as LucasArts unveils the actors set to star in The Force Unleashed.

The Cast of The Force Unleashed

The New Technology of The Force Unleashed
With The Force Unleashed, LucasArts not only introduces a new chapter in the Star Wars saga, but also two completely new and innovative technologies -- Digital Molecular Matter by Pixelux Entertainment and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. These groundbreaking technologies combine with Havoc physics to create true next-gen gameplay and the Force like it's never been seen or experienced before.

5 out of 5 stars The Force Is Strong With This One   October 8, 2008

I was slightly skeptical about buying this game due to some of the negative reviews saying that it is boring and repetative. But being a huge Star Wars fan I decided to buy it anyway.

As the famous 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...' appeared I could feel the excitment building up inside me. It never disappeared, only grew more and more as the game went on! The opening cutscene is absolutley stunning! It completely captures the feel of the Star Wars universe. It's not just the opening cutscene that does this, it's every single cutscene in the game.

I wont go in to too much detail as I do not want to ruin the game for people, but on the first level you get to play as Darth Vader! How cool is that?! As Darth Vader you arrive on the Wookie homeworld searching for a Jedi that escaped the dreaded 'Order 66'. Along the way you cut down Wookies with the most awesome weapon in the Universe, the Lightsaber. Or you can choke them with your Force Grip, or my personal favourite Force Push them and watch them crash through walls and watch trees uproot as your Force Push hits them. I've read people moaning that the bodies disappear after you kill them. So what?! It's what you can do to them before that that counts!

I never go bored with this game once, and if you are a true fan of Star Wars then you won't either. Beautiful levels and stunning graphics add to the true Star Wars excitement. Trust me, buy it! It's fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars ONE TO BUY!!!!!!!   September 11, 2008

I have like many on you probably have, downloaded the Demo from PLAYSTATION Network. The Demo plays solidly and smoothly. The graphics are stunning and the sound through a Dolby Surround/DTS is amazing and should be the only way it's heard, if possible.

Although the demo only takes you through a short section of the game, the controls and powers available in the game are something completely new to Star Wars Gamers. From what I have seen, I would definitely recommend this game and I have already pre-ordered this game for 19th September delivery.

4 out of 5 stars For all its flaws, this is still a worthwhile game.   September 21, 2008

I will split my review in several key stages in order to make my opinion far more easy to understand. I will try to make this as unbiased as possible!

Gameplay: This game is fabulous fun to play. Manipulating the force in crazy ways, hacking your lightsaber at foes with fantastic feedback is simply a joy. The different combos keep the whole thing feeling fresh throughout, I never found it boring at any time during playthrough.

The AI and enemies: This is where the game shoots itself in the foot. For all the combos imaginable, you simply do not have the ability to use them efficiently. The scope of enemies you face are from the basic stormtrooper to walkers. Most enemies are killed in one or two saber swings, making it impossible to combo since they die so fast (I played the game on Sith Warrior, not too hard, not too easy). Then on the other end you will meet incredibly tough enemies such as the Purge Trooper (remember the name, they are horrific to fight) who take a lot of hits, allowing you to combo as much as you want, but its flawed by the preposterously efficient counter-attacking AI. Let me outline this problem to you like this: The AI is either dumb, or very good.
When the AI is good, it will wait for you to hit it a certain number of times to initiate a combo, and just before you hit the final button to exectute the combo, they will hit you with a powerful knockback shot, completely undoing your progress. When the AI is dumb however, they stand there as if their gun has jammed, easy prey. Ruins the immersion somewhat.

Bosses: Boss fights are a key part of the game, and it's such a shame that they only exist in two seperate spectrums - either very easy, or very hard. Some bosses are simply spammed and comboed to death, which to me is great as it's hilarious fun. But other times you will meet not only one boss, but perhaps 2 of them! The annoying part of this is that you pick up tactics and strategies for dealing with certain enemies throughout the game, only to have one boss utterly obliterate you and making your tactic void. This does stimulate a strategic element of thinking where you need to adjust to defeat a certain boss, but at other times the odds are horribly stacked against you, meaning you will die many, many times. Either it's me who sucked, or the boss fights can get really frustrating at times as the boss seems to have some godly moves, which leaves you in the shade thinking...ok... It's not nice having to beat one huge, really tough Rancor who knocks you down every few seconds, but then having a stealthed sith jedi pop out of the air and stab you in the back for big damage.

Story: This is one really important factor for the game, as it tries to tie 2 episodes from the insanely popular movies together. It has a lot to live up to, and it certainly delivers. The scripting is humorous and witty, and some cutscenes are utter genius. But what really impressed me was how the story managed to catch me off guard, leading me down one path, when in reality you are heading down another. All without me knowing! This is the best part of the game, as you don't have any choices to make until the end, but you are still cunningly decieved.

Content: Reviewers complained about this game's maps being virtually the same, and I agree. To an extent. You play on just a handful of maps, but there is a hint of variety in the zones and areas that it's bearable. Visiting Kashyyyk for the second time is interesting as the setting has changed since your first visit. Open areas are plenty, with big boulders to hurl at your victims. There are corridor sections too, especially near the end (big surpirse there?) which can bore, but using force lightning on 6 enemies at once in a tiny room is hilarious.
New costumes are available after every mission, with several unlockables too! Lightsaber crystals can either buff or colour your blade, and some options look fantastic. But these are all aesthetic, they don't make your lightsaber more powerful, just prettier. Spheres can be found and gained, allowing you to purchase force powers or buffs. In the last level, your character will be a god and he will look amazing, and the enemies get tougher too so it doesn't become a cakewalk by any means.
The puzzles are either dumb common sense of putting this here for that to happen, or they can be interactive and interesting. The former happens quite a bit however. There are a couple of bugs lurking around, specifically sound bugs. Nothing really gamebreaking from my experience on the PS3.

Replay value: Great fun and unlockables will undoubtedly keep you playing for perhaps a second run through, but after that the game will get stale. Without multiplayer, your looking at keeping this game for a week or so. It's only 10 hours long anyway.

Overall: Simply put, if you are a Star Wars fan by any measure, get this game and try it. It is definately worth playing for its huge fun factor. I consider as an on and off game. Don't play it for long stretches as you will get bored. Play it in bursts.
Good game overall, I firmly believe its positives outweigh the negatives. An excellent effort by Lucasarts, but the execution is sloppy in places.
My percentage score would be: 80%

4 out of 5 stars " Your powers are weak old man" ....... but still great fun .....(finshed game review)   September 18, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Now I promise to keep my bias in check for this review, because for a huge Star Wars like me it is very easy to get swept up in this game and ignore some of the very disappointing problems (which I will get to later). Anyway thanks to my very good mate who works for a well known games retailer he managed to smuggle me my much awaited Star Wars Force Unleashed game last night, so for about 3 hours last night I was force pushing this and lightsabering that, I was in element, yes I am now a 29 year old man but I will still happily put a brown towel over my head and toy lightsabre in my hand and pretend I am Jedi, I love Star Wars new and old, I just adore this SAGA, so buying this game was no brainer!

Ok let's get the bad bits out the way as I am sure most of you have played the demo on PSN and Xbox Live and know where the game has let its self down, I would like to say that these issues have been sorted for the final game but this is not the case. Ever since this game was announced a lot of fuss has been made of the Euphoria engine, it was suppose to have revolutionary AI technology, the enemy was meant to be so clever they would even have an instinct of self preservation. This all sounds very "next gen and impressive" but in practice all this means the storm troopers and rebels will try and grab hold of stuff when you pick them up, the enemy are still as stupid as ever they will run away from cover then just stop and decide to fight anyway? They don't try and flank you, or go and get help? Or anything you would expect from revolutionary AI. Don't get me wrong the AI isn't awful at all there are some nice touches, I love the way Storm Troopers and rebels will fight amounst each other until you as the apprentice walk into the room! I also like the way in the opening level when you play as Vader the troopers don't attack you obviously but they certainly seem to say out of your way! (who can blame them).

There was also a lot of talk about the games physics the way wood splinter's, and glass smashes, and the way the metal bends when you throw stuff (and people at it), now it is impressive I admit, but it would be a hell of a lot more impressive if the tree you just chopped down or the glass panel you just smashed onto the floor didn't disappear in a matter of seconds! This also applies to the troopers and rebels you slay; it just doesn't seem right that after you kill a Jawa or a storm trooper they just vanish? (I thought only Jedi's vanish when u they die??).

Another slight annoyance with the combat in the game it you never really feel you are wielding a Lightsabre it is more like a glowing stick, it just doesn't seem to cut anything? It doesn't cut through the scenery, swiping at an enemy leaves in one piece!! Yeah don't expect any arms or legs to come off because they don't, bodies fall to the ground intact and the disappear... ...... it could be argued these are small things but it doesn't tend to ruin the feeling you are wielding the coolest weapon of movie history.

The last thing under the "slightly disappointing file" would have to be the force powers, obviously they great fun and work fine and If I had not played Midways Psi-Ops on the PS2 I would have been very impressed. You see they problems is this PS2 did the same kind of telekinesis powers but did they loads better, you could pick an enemy soldier up like you can in SWFU but in Psi Ops you smash them from wall to wall you really had a feeling of control that SWFU doesn't quite catch as well. I know I am only a few hours in to the game and maybe my power will get better, but I cant help but feel the force lightening feels all wrong, well not wrong just not powerful, do u remember when the Emperor fired that lighting bolt from his hands in Return of the Jedi it seemed devastating??..... Ok maybe I am nit picking now...

My god I can't believe how negative I have been so far, you wouldn't guess that I actually love this game would you,

Ok all things I mentioned above is probably the reason the game is being called Farce Unleashed! BUT and it is big but if you are a Star Wars fan you will easily forget all of the above this game is the nearest you will get to being in a Star Wars movie. The story so is brilliant and is doing a great job of bridging the gab between a Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the story is told through stunningly beautiful cut scenes, the voice acting is just superb (although quick nit pick.... the apprentice seems a bit too nice in the cut scenes, not the bad mother Sith I hoped he would be).
The story line its self shows Lord Vader making himself busy by destroying the remaining Jedi that survived ORDER 66 and the game opens with you playing everyone's favourite asthmatic Sith Lord as you land on the wookie planet of Kashyyyk your mission to kill a lone Jedi! When doing so you find a young boy who Vader saves takes under his wing fast forward quite a few years and you are now the Apprentice. Obviously being Star Wars there will be plenty of soul searching for this young apprentice and as I mention he is actually a nice gut, so as you go on in the game it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine the apprentice may suddenly start to remember who killed his father! Ooohhh I and really looking forward to seeing how the story will pan out.

Game play- minus the niggles the game play is great fun, from playing the short intro with Vader and crushing people necks with a mere press of the triangle button to deflecting laser fire with your up turned lightsabre as the apprentice it is so much fun to play. It never gets tired picking enemies up using force grip and dropping them into lava or off a huge drop, force pushes are great fun especially when you let it build up and explode! Throwing droids at people is also just great.......... Let's face it if you are like me and always wanted to be Jedi then you can't help but have an absolute ball with this game!

The graphics and atmosphere is just outstanding to too, I have just done a level on junk planet, that's a giant skip and the it looks beautiful, character models too look near perfect, little jawas look great even better when you force push them into oblivion (yeah I got them back for poor little R2-D2)....

I could just go one about how much fun this game is but I best not, so to sum up yes this game is bit of a disappointment, it is really just a "last Gen" game with "Next Gen" graphics and sparkle, it certainly could have done with a slightly higher age rating so we could have had some proper Lightsabre action. So if you are looking for just a next gen 3rd person action game there are better out there, if however you a massive Star Wars fan who wants to play in his or her very own instalment in the is awesome Saga this game is must buy..... I am happy to fall into the latter ............and to everyone else .......

"I find your lack of faith disturbing"
