5 out of 5 stars Fun, relaxing and ponytastic!!   June 10, 2007
57 out of 57 found this review helpful

To echo the other reviews you will be blown away by the graphics in this game the range of environments on trail rides is fabulous (piers, beaches, forests, swamps....the list goes on) Being on the look out for gates to new trails, animals ranging from wasps to deer to grizzly bears as well as items to accessorize your horse. There is also a daily trail quest to earn some extra money as well as photography prizes for each full set of three animals (24 sets of 3 in all) The sound on these trails is also worth a mention with altering sounds of the pony's hooves depending on terrain (bridges, water, dirt etc.) and today I was sitting in a park playing...you can scarcely differentiate between the bird noises from the ds and the ones in the (very real) trees!! If these trails were non-linear this game would be beyond brilliance.

Looking after your horse is a fun use of the stylus...for example to clean hooves you brush away the dirt and tap at the stones (and if you are lucky, stones and shells for rewards!) to remove them. If your pony has red bits indicating infection you can treat them...you can also see your VERY cool horseshoes if you have found special ones... Accesorizing is a part of the game i wasnt sure I would enjoy being 18 and not particularly girly but The wide range allows something for everyone and the custom quartermark and blanket although requiring some skill and dexterity are a fun way to while away the time (at the moment I have a fine spiraling flame drawn on my pony's rump) Customizing a pony to begin with is SO fun with MANY options and I like to create new varieties even when I don't have the money to actually buy that pony into my stables.

Anyway, its a seriously fun virtual pet game for the DS and the great graphics and amazing responsiveness of the pony make you really feel like you have your own pony(s) in your pocket and the daily tasks and chores encourage you to switch on everyday. I'd like it if there were more 'gameplay' elements making it feel as though the game had more of an ultimate objective (apart from retirement and career choices for your pony), the game is very easy but then it fits the type of game it is...only small things and if you like horses, really not hard to ignore among the otherwise great elements of this game.

5 out of 5 stars A great virtual horse game   June 2, 2007

I saw this game on the internet and decided to get it straight away. I've always been a little disappointed with virtual horse games, but with this one I am very happy with. The graphics are amazing, and much better than I expected, especially from a DS point of view. There are realistic looking terrains ranging from sea, sand and grass to hillside cliffs and slow moving streams and you come across varied wildlife when you go trail riding with your horse. Although some of the animals in this don't look at all exceptional most are quite realistic and are very cute when they scurry across your path.

You have a choice of 6 horse breeds (connemera, Haflinger, Mustang, Hokkaido, Camargue and Fjord) and the option of creating your own perfect horse with many different colours and markings that can make your horse unique. They also prefer a certain type of food, but I shall not go into that.

You can go around the trails taking photos of the different wildlife you see, which can earn you money and accessories such as blankets, saddles, horseshoes and hair accessories which can then be used on your horse to raise their style meter. You earn most of your money from your chores (three things you have to do like wash your horse, feed them, go to the shop and so on) and from completing tasks on a certain trail that changes each day. Although the tasks are varied and are quite exciting to do, it doesn't earn you much, neither does your chores and getting enough money to buy a new horse (which is normally around 200) or buying care items and new style items.

You can take your horse to the races, which only increases their speed meter, yet it makes no difference on trails, since on the trails there is only a trot and a gallop. I have not finished all the races yet, but I have not earned any money from the races I have finished already, so the only reason to do this really is to raise your horse's speed meter.

But, I enjoy this game and you could easily get caught up in this game. The graphics, as I have said earlier are great and the horses actually move like horses, and react to you in a very realistic way (especially when you pet them) and this is something unique to this game. The little videos on this game that give you a little introduction to the various areas are cute as well.

5 out of 5 stars Giddy Up! This game rocks!   May 24, 2007

This game is great fun and there is loads to do. Having played Animal Crossing and Nintendogs to death I was keen for something new for my DS. Pony Friends has it all - you can custom design up to 3 ponies, choosing the colour and pattern of the coat, legs, face markings, tail and mane. Or you can buy one of 6 real life breeds. You can accessories your pony with different saddles, blankets, horse shoes, bridles and quatermarks (patterns on its rump) or you can design your own - just like in Animal Crossing. Once your pony is saddled up you can go trail riding. There are loads of trails (really pretty for a DS title)to unlock in a variety of environments, but you need to get your pony fit enough to do the longer ones. On the trail rides you have to take picture of wildlife that you see and there are rewards for photographing sets of animals. You can enter races to get your pony fit, you have to cheers your pony on into the microphone and it goes fast or slow depending on the volume of your voice. In the field you build up a releationship with your pony (like Nintendogs) by stroking it till hearts appear and feeding it special treats.
There are loads of things to try and collect and style, speed and fitness goals for each pony that you need to spend time building up.

This game will keep you entertained for hours on end!

5 out of 5 stars Hi Again   July 29, 2007

I decided to re-write this review.

To start with you buy a pony or you can create one of your own. When you create one, you can choose from many different colours and patterns. Also, if you do not want to create your pony they're different sort of breeds you can also purchase. Once you have chosen your new pony you name it. My first pony was called Willow. Some names that I considered were good are: Smudgie, Shandy, Mark, Olly, Duggie, Becky, Guy and Tucker. Of course there are many more(my 2nd pony is called Zing).
When you start you will be given three chores, that are easy to do and will not take up much of your time. These chores can change sometimes but my first tasks were: Excercise, Feed and trail ride.
To "Go To Shop" or any trail rides, when your pony is in it's stall you click on the picture of a hat and whip then you will see all the trails you can go on, shop and pony club. Some trails are locked at first meaning you either have to find gates on trails (that are quite easy to see, but look behind trees and all sort) or increase your pony's fitness, speed and style. Mostly your fitness to get other trails.
To get money you have to complete all your chores, complete some tasks on trail rides that have bright yellow stars on them or find money on trail rides.
You can accesorise your pony too. You can find these accesories on trail rides, or in the shop. Also, when you are out on trail rides you can take pics of animals you see. All you do is old the stylus on the animal for half a second then the picture will take. Once you have completed a set of animals you will recieve a reward.
To see all the animals you've seen go to your journal and click on the camera. Easy! Oh, today I found a cool thing that happened to me. I bought my second horse today and I created it. The price of creating a pony was 230p or , but I only had 203. It still let me design my pony and buy it. I ended have -22 money, but when I saved it and when back on again I managed to get 9999 coins in money!
It might not work for you, but try it and see what happens!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful horse fun   December 29, 2007

I got this game a while ago and i loved it! first you have to get a horse, you can buy a breed or you can make your own horse up, making your own horse costs more than getting an real breed. you can go on trail rides and if you find a gate or increase your horses fitness you can unlock the next trail ride, there is a map of all the trail rides you have unlocked and are able to go on, the ones that are still waiting to be found will be shown as a padlock. when you go on your trail ride, you can take pictures of all the wildlife, you have ten shots availbale, sometimes you will take pictures of animals you already have in your scrapbook but other times you might take a picture of a new animal and it is put in your scrapbook. if you complete a set of pictures in your scrapbook you will get a reward! but some animals are only found at a certain time of day, some animals are found at all points of the day. you can not steer your horse, instead there is a pathway you must take, you can choose wether to gallop or to walk at anytime on your trail ride. after a trail ride or trail rides your horse will get very dirty, espiecally after more than one trail ride. first you must groom your horse with the body, main and tail brush. next you must wash your horse with shampoo and conditioner and rinse it with a hose full of water. you might need to wash your horse with some flea powder if needed. next you have to scrape off all the mud off your horses hoof and then pick at the stones until they fall off. sometimes shells and coins get stuck in the hoof, if you complete a set of coins or shells you get an award. when you go to the map you can see the pony club, the pony club is a club were ponies race. blow into the michrophone to get your horse running faster than the others and win. when you win first place you unlock the next race in the list of races, after you complete all the races you can race any of the races in any order and it won't matter anymore. sometimes you are asked to complete tasks on your trail rides, when you complete those tasks you get paid. sometimes there are secret items hidden in trail rides, if you find them you can keep them! you have a to-do-list of things you must do, when you complete all the chores on your list you get paid and with that money you can buy care supplies (shampoos and medicine) food (vegetables, treats, hay and oats) accories (sadels, blankets, horse shoes and rains) decorations (hair and main styles and designs for the horses rump (hip))you can check on your horses health and the vet will tell you what you need to now. a woman will help you through everything, giving you tips and advice in a non-annoying way, she does not annoye you at all at anytime. you can have up to three horses, you can keep them in the feilds or in the stable. you can check if your horse is healthy, happy, clean and loved. check on your horses awards to see what you need to increase, speed, stlye or fitness. once you have every trail ride unlocked, every accesorie and you have every meter full, you are ready to retire your horse and choose one out of four careers for your horse. you can exercise your pony, the more successful your horse is the more different kinds of tricks it will do. you can watch little parts of the pony and friends video and you can also check what accesories you have and which ones you need to get. dress up your pony in so many awesome styles and you can connect with other pony owners as well! you can name your pony and call it over and stroke and pat it. feed your pony its favourite food and make it happy. check your collection of shells and coins to see which ones are left to find. the graphics are amazing and all the sounds are spectaculiar. i defenitley recommend this game to horse lovers and to people who really want to feel like they have a horse and to understand how it is to own a pony. its a very peaceful game and makes you want to switch on your DS everyday and play. i hope my review was helpful to you!
