Amazon.co.uk Review In a nutshell: It's been over fifteen years since the last Super Mario Bros. but finally Mario is back in a proper 2D platforming adventure. Just because it's old school though doesn't mean it's old hat...The lowdown: Considering the last Super Mario Bros. game is still the best selling video game of all time (17.28 million copies and counting) this has a lot to live up to, but it almost effortlessly captures the action and charm of the old games. The basics of the game are the same as always as you run and jump through mostly horizontally scrolling levels. New to the game are power-ups that turn Mario into a giant or make him really tiny, as well as one that gives him a Koopa shell on his back to attack enemies with. Although the gameplay is all in two dimensions the graphics are 3D, with all new moves such as the triple jump and wall jump added in as well. Most exciting moment: As well as the single player mode there's also a wireless multiplayer mode where you get to battle a friend (as Luigi) across a whole bunch of specially designed levels. Since you ask: As Super Mario World on the SNES (since re-released as Super Mario Advance 2 on the GBA) was subtitled Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan that name couldn't be used for this new game, although that's secretly whatever everyone's calling it - behind Nintendo's back. The bottom line: The impossible has happened: Nintendo have created a worthy follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3! Harrison Dent
Product Description Twenty years after Nintendos biggest franchise was born, the Mario Bros. return in a dazzling, all-new platformer sure to set players fingers twitching. Fans from Marios classic days will see their dreams answered in this return to the Mushroom Kingdom, while a new generation of Mario players will learn what true platforming greatness means. Run, jump and battle enemies through multiple levels in each world. Every time players finish one world, they can move onto the next, but each level features impediments in the forms of fortresses, Hammer Bros. and bosses. After defeating the boss of each world, players can move on to the next, culminating in the final fight in the last world. Mario and Luigi can do all kinds of jump maneuvers: increasingly high triple jumps, wall jumps and high bounces off enemies. Mario also can use power-ups like Mushrooms (grow big), Fire Flowers (throw fireballs), Starmen (become invincible), Blue Shells (turn into a speedy, blue Koopa shell) and other mushrooms that make him tiny or huge. In addition to the main game and the wireless two-player mode, players also can use the touch screen to play tons of minigames (either by themselves or over DS Local Area Network with 1 to 4 players via DS Download Play). These include card games, targetbopping-type games and much more. Features: Jump, bounce and power-up through visually stunning side-scrolling worlds filled with Mushroom Kingdom madness. Mushrooms make Mario ultra-tiny or ultrahuge, and new items like the Blue Shell (which transforms Mario into a spinning shell that wipes out enemies) will keep players on their toes. The worlds are swarming with classic enemies like Goombas and Koopas, but watch out for new foes, big bosses and unbelievable challenges. As Mario and Luigi, two players can battle for stars on specially designed levels over local wireless. The game wont end until one bro. reigns supreme.

Letsa Go! June 5, 2007 42 out of 44 found this review helpful
The Mario franchise is one of the most beloved and respected within the gaming world with it's bright, camp, colourful and totally addictive game play with more prequels, sequels and spin-offs you can shake a stick at. Super Mario Bros. DS is a great game when I first got my DS this came with it. I was slightly disappointed I gotta say I actually thought this was just a remake but I got more and more into the game and totally fell in love with it I loved the genius of using the generic 2D formula with the 3d twist which is utterly gorgeous. As always moving further into the game is gains increasingly difficult once i got to world 8 and defeated Bowser for the umpteenth time over the last 15 years I realized I missed two of the stages worlds 4 & 7 I grew increasing frustrated with not knowing how to unlock them cut a long story short and managed to get them up and was satisfied. After the I had completely finished the game with all gold star coins acquired I checked out the mini games not really expecting much and found myself playing them for hours on end totally unlike me the one that got me addicted was the poker game which a card game I love one night i found myself glancing at the clock one night and seeing 4:21am I kinda knew it was time to stop. Kids won't just love this I'm 21 and I got my mum into this, my brother and a few of my cousins who all have DS' and occasionally play against each other in the Vs. mode. I recommend this to anyone who loves Mario, new people to the wonderful DS and anyone else who want's to give it a go.

It gets better with age December 29, 2006 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
This is just the type of game I used to enjoy as a kid, so addictive you can play it for hours. It's not just the main game that's fun there are lots of mini games on the cartridge as well.
Go on buy it there are no questions to ask it is the game to have.
The true Mario is back March 23, 2007 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
This game sees the return of Mario in all his side scrolling platform glory! As much as i like the 3D Mario games they never quite acheived the same brilliance as the simpler 2D outings.
This game however is not just some rehash of an olden days version of Mario repackaged this is a genuine NEW Mario game.
There are loads of varied and fun worlds to see and plenty of enemies to be beaten or avoided.
Although completing the main quest is fairly simple and is more a matter of time than anything else the real challenge comes from replaying beaten levels to collect the 3 special coins on each level and to find the different routes not just through each level or world but through the overall game. By beating certain bosses as mini Mario you are able to open up whole new worlds for exploration.
Simply put this game is a lot of fun wether you are an experienced Mario fan that loved the original outings (or there modern day remakes) or new to the Mario phenomenon.
If you own a DS you should definately have this in your collection!
First and by far Favourite June 17, 2007 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
It's simple- if you own a Nintendo DS then you deserve to give it the New Super Mario Bros. game. This game was my first game for my DS and since then I have purchased a fair few others; but this shall always be my favourite. Dash, jump, climb and swim your way through eight incredible worlds rich in marvellous areas. Once you own New Super Mario Bros. you won't want to put it down for hours. Trust me- I was setting my alarm an hour early before school to play on it in the morning! Boasting brilliantly inventive games, beautiful colours and amazing graphics this is by far one of Nintendo's greatest achievements. I can assure you that you won't regret buying it. Even diehard Mario Fans will still find this game fresh and exciting- in no way is it just sponging off it's previous successes. Okay, so some big fans may say that it is too easy and you finish it quickly but I think that it is replayable as there are always hidden extras you miss the first and second time round. I have finished it and it took me several months! Also the ace minigames are very addictive and fun and make full use of the DS's stylus. The Mario Vs. Luigi setting is equally marvellous and fun. All in all, New Super Mario Bros. on DS is well worth your time and money. If you have a spare 25- buy it! And if you don't- beg, borrow and steal until you get this wonderful game.
