5 out of 5 stars A stylish and original Wii exclusive   March 14, 2008

One of the Wii's most stylish games and one of the console's best titles has arrived courtesy of Suda 51. Don't be put off by other reviews that berate the UK version (which is the same as the Japanese original) just because it lacks the blood of the US version, this doesn't affect the overall quality of what is a superb game. In fact many reviews, and Suda 51, prefer the bloodless version as it improves the games pace and doesn't distract from the games overall look.

No More Heroes is the gaming equivalent of Kill Bill. You play the uber-cool Travis Touchdown, as you work your way through the 3D city of Santa Destroy, using your Wii remote to take out tons of enemies and work your way up the ranks to be the city's top assassin. Think PS2 classic Devil May Cry but with extra bits thrown in, including a variety of brilliant jobs/tasks to help fund your carnage. How many other games see you pumping gas, collecting coconuts, eradicating scorpions and catching lost kittens in order to earn cash? How many other games see you sitting on the loo in order to save the games progress? Humour is a big part of what makes No More Heroes so great and whilst it might sound like a gamer's game, casual gamers shouldn't be put off, the introductory training mode will have you up and running in minutes.

And should you need further convincing, NGamer, GamesRadar, Edge, The Official Nintendo magazine, nRevolution and IGN have given No More Heroes scores of between 88% and 94%, describing it as "...by far one of the best looking and most distinctive Wii games to date". It's hard to disagree.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing Travis Touchdown...   March 15, 2008

...the ultimate gaming icon...

No More Heroes is packed full of stylised action that's as awesome to perform as it is to watch. For those who bought the Wii for it's unique controls they are used brilliantly here. The story is incredibly high-concept and bizarre characters deliver plenty of drama and mature humour and there are lots of small details and gameplay detours to keep you engaged. This is the mature Wii action title you've been waiting for, and there's nothing else quite like it.

5 out of 5 stars Not without flaws, but absolutley brilliant   March 24, 2008

No More Heroes is just what the Wii needed - a proper gamers game that any of the older generation of gamers can appreciate. There are constant changes in pace, loads of retro nods in the loading screens and High Score tables, and simple but very satidfying gameplay.

Its incredibally rough around the edges mind. The graphics at times are LITERALLY Ps1 standard and the framerate in the city sections is painfully poor (Especially when on the bike). There is lots of pop up and the collision detection is quite frankly appalling and pretty inexcusable in this day and age. If you take graphics very seriously then, excellent art style aside, technically this isnt your sort of thing.

The thing is, when the game is as brilliantly playable and as funny as this, it simply doesnt matter at all. All the flaws become endearing in a way and they begin to raise a smile everytime they happen. You really fall in love with this game rather than play it.

The combat with the Wii controls is so satisfying, if you've had a bad day it works a treat. Instead of just mapping all the moves onto the remote and have you flail around like a madman, you only use remote gestures for the finishing moves, using the buttons for general fighting. This makes that finishing move so satisfying as you really feel in control, rather than alot of wii games where you wave your arms around and just hope for the best.

I would definatley recommend adding this to your collection, its a game that just drips with 'cool', it controls fantastically and is actually pretty funny along the way too.

5 out of 5 stars A good cel-shaded game   January 7, 2008

After playing the Japanese version, I have to say, I'm quite impressed with Grasshopper studios efforts. Travis Touchdown, the character you control, strives to become Santa Destroys best assassin.
The game uses cel shaded graphics, which look rather nice despite the fact it makes certain things a little difficult to see. Your beam katana (the sword thing that looks like a lightsaber) is your key weapon. To swing it, you press A despite many people actually wanted to actually swing the Wii remote. This was slightly disappointing as I was quite looking forward to swinging the Wii remote, similar to Zelda: Twilight Princess. Z is for locking onto enemies and B is used to grab stunned foes. There are Wii controls though like keeping your Katana powered up.
When you're not kicking ass you can explore Santa Destroy on your jet powered motorbike. Santa Destroy lakes a little detail but its fun to explore. You still need to pay the bills though and do other things that you would in your daily life, I mean, you don't spend your whole day killing people do you?
You can customise Travis as well changing everything from his sunglasses to his shoes. There's plenty of variety in the game. You can be killing enemies on a train at one point and delivering coconuts to an old man at another. The game does include cartoon violence though e.g. lots of blood and gore so it's not suitable for young children.
Overall, the games great fun with plenty of things to do. No more heroes should keep you entertained for quite a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Being censored makes no difference.   March 16, 2008

I admit at first I was a bit upset about the game being censored but I would never let it stop me from buying a game. You start off with the excellent tutorial which you can skip if you wish then you're right into the action. Everything about this game oozes quality. The cell-shaded graphics, the dialogue, boss fights, the humorous cut scenes and I even enjoyed the mini games you play to earn more money. I find myself laughing over and over at the main character who goes by the name of Travis Touchdown. Some people may look at this game and think it looks pretty shallow but there is much much more I could put in this review. At the end of the day it's not for everybody but if you're not buying it because of the lack of virtual blood then you are missing out on a quality game plus poor sales will mean developers will not waste time writing original games and dish out the same old same old.
