More than just the world's most powerful games console! January 25, 2008 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
I've owned my PS3 (premium 60GB version) since July last year and I'm still amazed at how good Sony's latest console actually is! Not only does it look very impressive stood next to my glossy piano black HD TV, it's also an extremely powerful, high performance and high definition entertainment centre. THE next-gen console! Even after the recent price cuts, some might still consider the PS3 as being too expensive, but when everything you get with it is taken into account, it could be considered as a bargain! It has a built-in Blu-ray player as standard and it's possibly the best one on the market, not just now but also in the foreseeable future. This is due to the ability to update the firmware via routine online updates provided by Sony, this is a very important feature seeing as the Blu-ray format has already been updated since launch, making other earlier non-PS3 units outdated. When you look at the current price for a stand alone Blu-ray player, you'll realise that the PS3 is definitely worth considering, even if used solely for Blu-ray playback! Connectivity with many accessories is supported, including but not limited to things such as USB memory sticks, most Bluetooth headsets and external HDD drives. You can talk for free with multiple people worldwide via the chat interface using a Bluetooth headset. By using the Playstation Network, downloadable content from the Playstation Store and multiplayer games are available on an always on, always free system. Competitors charge a monthly subscription for a similar service but Sony has recently stated that their online service will always remain free. All of your old PSone and PS2 games can be played on the 60GB version, although why would you want to after experiencing 1080p high definition gaming in all it's glory!? The spec of this system is very impressive and there are so many things you can use it for other than just playing games and watching movies in full 1080p definition; the list goes on and as time goes by, it's also growing. The build quality and robustness of the PS3 is extremely good; it runs very smoothly and quietly and never gets hot like all other consoles I've ever used, allowing worry free use all day and all night if you wish. No more panicking about your HDD catching fire as is the case with the Microsoft systems, which almost generate enough heat to cook an egg on top! With the PS3's extremely low failure rate, the statistics in this area speak for their self.
Admittedly the line-up of games until now has left maybe a little to be desired, however, things are all set to change in 2008 with the release of many highly anticipated titles and applications. To date, game developers still haven't even created anything which even uses half of the PS3's powerful potential! When you look at the jaw dropping graphics and intelligent AI of next-gen games like Call of Duty 4 and Drakes Fortune you'll be thinking to yourself "how can a game get any better?" imagine what the games in the near future will be like when developers make full use of all that untapped power of the Cell! Another addition coming to the Playstation arsenal early this year is Play TV; an HD capable freeview box which enables the user to watch, pause, rewind and record live TV directly to the PS3's HDD, much in the same way as a Sky+ box does but without the subscription or limited HDD space! The online 3D world community known as Playstation Home is set for release in the spring of '08; according to previews this will be the hub of the Playstation online community, an entire world with almost unlimited restrictions to what you can do. Likened to `Second Life' on the PC, Home is set to become huge this spring after the October '07 release being delayed. 2008 will be the year that the Playstation regains the crown of the ultimate games console after the Xbox 360 got off to an early lead in 2006 after the delayed launch of the Sony system. With the highly anticipated GTA IV set for release on 29th April and the many other AAA titles coming soon, the PS3 is a must have piece of equipment for this year and the future.
A full 5 star rating from me. The PS3 is an amazing gaming console, Blu-ray player and complete entertainment unit, a truly breathtaking piece of kit. Once you've got this thing hooked up to a large HD TV and complete surround sound, you'll likely never want to leave the house!! However cheesy Sony's "This is living" statement is, it really seems appropriate here!
Great (especially if you take Amazon's deal) October 18, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I did not even consider a PS3 until the price came down recently, as like many reviews have said, it was a bit pricey. I bought a Nintendo Wii a few weeks ago, and I love it for many reasons (which I will not mention, as this is a PS3 review). Then the news came out that the PS3 was dropping in price...
I thought long and hard about it, as even with the price drop, the PS3 still carries quite a hefty price tag. I had a look on a lot of websites and stores, and in my opinion, Amazon has the best offer on the PS3 at the moment, as they include an HDMI cable and 2 games, and they seem to have a greater selection of games to choose from than other sites and stores. Eventually, after 2 days of indecision, I took the plunge and went for the Amazon offer.
The next day, my PS3 arrived (with the 2 games, the free HDMI cable, and the Bluetooth Blu-Ray remote - sold separately - which I would highly recommend if you want to use the Blu-Ray functionality of the console frequently). From the moment I opened the box, it was apparent what I had paid for. The PS3 oozes quality. I plugged in all the relevant cables, switched my Sony flat panel to HDMI input, and proceeded to set up the console.
The quality of the console continues to impress with the built-in menu system, which is really easy to navigate and looks great. Basic setup of the console took about 5 minutes, I hit a few snags with the wireless setup, but got it working with a console update in the end.
The Sony online store is great too, and apparently they will be adding more and more content as time goes on. There are lots of HD movie trailers, game trailers and demos to download (I highly recommend Gran Turismo HD, if racing games are your thing). You can also download console and game updates from the net, if you hook your PS3 up.
I then decided to try one of the games I got with the console - Heavenly Sword. All I can say is WOW! This game looks really amazing, and if you have an HDTV, your eyes will water. The gameplay is great too, and the wireless Sixaxis controller is very responsive. The game also uses some motion sensing, and I found the Sixaxis controller pretty easy to use in this regard too. If this is what the first generation of PS3 games looks like, then I can't wait to see what we will be playing on it a year from now.
On top of all this, you get a Blu-Ray player, the machine upscales normal DVD's to 1080i as well, and there are some nice little features like the ability to install another OS onto the hard drive.
People are griping a lot about the lack of games for the console at the moment, but people have always griped about the quantity and quality of games available at console launches as far back as I can remember. Have patience, in 6 months time, you will be swimming in great titles. There are some great titles out now, and by March next year, you will not be sorry you bought a PS3.
The reason I mentioned the Wii in the beginning is that many people try to compare and put down one console over another. I still love my Wii for different reasons to the PS3 (the control system is unique and the games are really fun, especially with 2 or more players). The PS3 has true next-generation graphics, some great titles out now with many many more really great ones in the pipeline, built-in Blu-Ray, etc. I cannot comment on the XBox 360, as I have not owned one (I had an XBox which I was pretty happy with). Like many others have said, if you have the money, buy all 3 consoles, but if you can only afford one, I would highly highly recommend the PS3 (and the Wii, if you have another couple hundred quid lying around). And to those of you who are still wondering if the price tag is worth it (so did I) - the answer is YES.
This console is GREAT!!!
People missing the point of the bluray player? October 20, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It seems alot of people are missing the point of the included bluray player. With next gen games requiring alot more space the bog standard DVD isn't cutting it any more. Look at the req for crysis on the PC, 16GB hard drive space, 16! thats 2 dual layer DVD's worth.
Alot of people are citing the PS3's difficulty to make games for it, as the reason for GTA4 for being delayed, what if its a much simpler reason.. ...maybe it doesn't fit on a DVD.. ..and maybe microsoft has a clause in their contract to make sure its released on both console's at the same time. Just maybe....
Is this starting to make sense? the PS3 without a bluray player limits it's capability on the gaming side too, its not just gonna be for movies.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and i have given you mine.
Oh one thing, if your an xbox 360 owner, what would you do if they released a game that was only on a HD DVD? and you didn't have that optional extra? would you fork out for it?
I would feel a little cheated to be honest
back compatability might not be seen as vital, but i am so glad that sony see the high capacity disks as a must have thing.
Have fun Gaming

My View January 31, 2007 97 out of 117 found this review helpful
So much varied, often highly opiniated views on here for something that hasn't even come out here yet! so here's my thoughts...
1. Cost, Sony lose money every machine sold (i've heard upto 300), with the idea being they make up the money with software sales. 7 Processors, Next-gen DVD player, HD gaming etc. is it really that bad a price?! Your choice i guess, dont like it, dont buy it!
2. XBox 360 currently sells for 200. HD-DVD add-on costs 130 (shopto.net) and the wireless function is 55 (amazon.co.uk), all in all equals 385... only 40 less than a PS3 if you want a 360 which does the same as a PS3 (60Gb), and it's been out a year. Advantage for 360 fans is that if you dont care about high def films or wireless you dont have to have it!
3. games. All i hear is blah blah is better than blah blah, this is just a port etc etc. These are opinions, please dont confuse them with fact. Different games work for different ppl and you should choose your gaming experience based your own personal views (if any). Surely if games are on all platforms then everyone is happy and everyone gets a better choice. Great
4. Ok, alot has been said about market shares, who will win the console war or which format (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) will prevail? Dont forget that competitive markets are good for us consumers because prices are driven down. If there was only one "next gen" machine then it would be alot more expensive, as well as the games because there wouldnt be any competition. therefore it is good that there are two rival machines and we can all live in harmony! Plus there is deftinately room for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as different film companies support one or the other (or sometimes both) so dont expect one of them to die out. So many 360s and so many PS3's, there is enough custom for both. Lets not forget that with the PS2, Sony had 70% of the gaming market, yet the Xbox franchise has still done really well.
Well that's about it, I hope this info helps you to make a decision which is best for you.
PS Given this 5 out of 5 because i believe the Playstation3 is a great product for those who wish to step up to the "next gen" or "high def" technologies and want an all round entertainment centre for their home. I havent written a review for the 360 but i would give it 5 out of 5 as well because i've played on one and had a great time! PS3 and 360... It's a good time to be a gamer!
All round brilliant console May 10, 2007 19 out of 23 found this review helpful
I bought the PS3 on launch day and have been having a great time with it ever since. It has astounding graphics, although I don't recommend you buy it unless you have or are planning to get a high def T.V. as its not really worth the price unless you can experience HD in full. The controls are brilliant, especially the new trigger like feature for the R2 and L2 buttons. The games line up is not brilliant yet, but some of the games being released in the near future look great!
Having read many reviews I have noticed that one of the main criticisms of the PS3 is its price tag, but although theres no denying its expensive, for what you get its not that bad. In comparison to the XBOX 360, you may be paying 150 quid more for the PS3 but you get a much better package, for example with the PS3 you get a High Definition Blu Ray Player (which I have used extensively and have to say is top notch!), if you want the XBOX equivilent, an HD DVD player its gonna cost you another 130 quid. The PS3 also has wireless built in, and for the XBOX you need to fork out another 60 quid for this. You also get online gaming for free, and this is 40 a year on the XBOX. It also looks a lot better and its almost silent when its running (if you have a 360 you will no what I mean - its sounds like a jet plane!!!). Not to mention the PS3 has more processing power, and is more powerful. The XBOX also can't output at full 1080p high definition (unless they have launched firmware to fix this) and the PS3 can.
I do own an XBOX 360 as well, and in all honesty I think the PS3 is better, and importantly, the graphics are much smoother. The one gripe I do have with the PS3 is that currently there is no feature allowing you to stream your music from your computer to the console, this means that if you want to listen to your music on the console you have to load it all onto its hard drive. With the XBOX you can do this however.
Some other reviews complain about its reliability and failure rate, but seeing as mine has worked trouble free so far I can't really comment negatively on this.
All in all I would highly reccomend the PS3 to anyone looking for a new console. Its a brilliant games machine and high definition player (Blu Ray), and it also has a web browser so you can surf the net on it too! Try not to be put off by its high price.
