Here Wii go, Here Wii go, Here Wii go! December 29, 2006 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
Nintendo have really thought out of the box with the Wii, and good god is it fantastic. Video games are supposedly all about experiencing things we wouldn't normally be able to. However, if we were experiencing them for real, we wouldn't be pressing X to launch a bowling ball, or B to shoot an arrow. That is why the Wii is so fantastic. People who golf in real life can golf in virtual reality with pretty much the same skill level. Another thing about the Wii is it's accessibility - On Christmas day my 88 year old granddad was Wii Bowling with the rest of the family, and my game-phobic uncle even stepped up to the golf green. Sure, it isn't HD gaming. Sure, it's not the most amazing processor or fanciest graphics. If it were, it would be disappointingly behind schedule, and the exact same as it's predecessor except with better graphics and twice the size (and price). Even at launch, the Wii is 20 less than the core Xbox 360, and has a game included. It's tiny (a bit bigger then 3 DVD cases, a friend actually did the comparison), which makes it very portable, which is ideal considering how amazing for multiplayer it is. It's very easy to set up, and even easier to use. It also looks damn good - the loading slot lights up when there isn't a disc inserted, which means we can now load discs in the dark! Hurrah! The virtual console is also fantastic - NES, SNES and master system titles avaliable are amazing. There is also an internet browser available to download for it for free - and it's not bad! I was a big supporter of the Wii before it came out, now an owner of one, I am all too happy to give it every little bit of praise I have. I recommend Wii Play as you get the extra controller as well as games that help you get used to the remote.
Hope this is helpful
Fantastic Fun and Hidden Depth September 6, 2007 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
Well, this is my sons Wii I am talking about. Apart from it being a brilliant console I wantd to clarify some things about Wii Sports - the game that ships with the console.
If you spend an hour with it you will not in any way realise it's ability to be an enduring game. In particular Wii Tennis just grows and grows. The better you get the better your Wii controlled opponent gets. When you get passed 1000 points it becomes intensely difficult and as your skill develops you realise that you can slice the ball or put top spin on it or hit your shot harder or softer and chose your angles.
Fantastic.
My daughter loves it too - truly fun for all the family.
Wii(sic) now have many games for this fab and intelligent console.
Nintendo Wii Console (Includes Wii Sports) May 22, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
[...]. Well worth every penny in my opinion. Great fun for all the family and even better when you have your mates round, although after 3 hours of it I was extrememly sore the following day (I didn't realise I had muscles in some places) You soon get used to it though.
I also purchased a wii remote docking station with rechargable batteries and I think this would be well worth the money. It stores your remotes neatly and safely and saves money in the long run.
All in all I am pleased with the purchase, fantastic fun
Great Fun for everyone. December 11, 2006 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
Thanks to Amazon, we had a console on 9th December. Resisted the temptation to sell it on EBAY like everybody else seems to be doing so here are my reflections.
Beautifully compact and unobtrusive - was very surprised to find no digital output for sound (to play over a surround sound setup)but here is the rub - graphics are very good and more than adequate, stereo/prologic sound is again more than adequate. We don't have the RGB scart lead and even over the standard composite video lead when displayed on a B&O Avant RF, images are crisp and colours vibrant. Set-up is 5 minutes out-of-the box.
By far the most impressive thing about the Wii is that everyone - of all ages - wants to play it. No console in our house has ever been used by my wife of her own will, and there she was playing tennis and ignoring the pleas of the wailing kids to have a go. It really attracts 'non-gamers' with the use of simple movements. Give it two to three minutes to get the basic idea of the handheld control and you'll be away. I bought the Console and also ordered 'Play' which comes with an extra controller - I think we'll need all four controllers working over the Christmas period to be honest!!!!
I deal in premium audio visual goods for a living and it is strikingly obvious that Ninetendo have struck a good balance with the Wii console - sometimes High Res images and Dolby Digital/7.1 outputs are simply not necessary. My initial impressions are that the console will widen the appeal of gaming and make people prance around like fools enjoying themselves with other 'non-gamers' amongst friends or extended family. We are using the Sports games bundled with the Console and those we are buying effectively for free in 'Play' (for the price of an extra controller which comes with the game)to get used to the console and the new controller which is highly impressive.
I can only think that as developers get to grips with the potentials of the new hand-held controllers the games will get more and more impressive and enjopyable. Well done, I think the Wii will take a sizeable chunk of the market share based on my first experiences with the family.
The Underdog June 29, 2007 37 out of 42 found this review helpful
Ok, there is no dispute that the Wii was the underdog, I have the PS3 and 360 and was not really sure about the Wii, at the end of the day, however, the price tag won me over.
I do like the the whole motion sensative business, and for short spell, and during parties its the most fun that can be had, however, if you are playing a game that may well take several hours - such as Zelda, then I would recomend you buy one of the 'old-style' controllers earier on the wrists and easier to concentrate with then the classic will always be better for those 'hard-core' hours spent infont of the consol.
I dont think that I need to mention that the graphics are not on a par with either the 360 or the PS3, but that said Nintendo know their strengths and have gone for a more inventive style of game play more than relying on the look.
One last thing three cheers to the guys at nintendo for actually delivering a fully backward compatable next-gen consol - others had promised but only they delivered.
