5 out of 5 stars The populist choice   May 17, 2008

The Wii is aimed at everyone, everybody, everything, as it's supposed to take the traditional amount of button pressing and joypad expertise away from gaming and it make it something much more accessible. Which is a good thing. Now the whole family can join in and play the bundled Wii Sports or attempt to get fit with Wii Fit or play party games etc

Now the question on gamers' lips is 'it is just a fad'? Personally, I have struggled to see much depth to a lot of the Wii games so far (Mario Galaxy and Zelda are exceptions) but I do think that the motion sensitivity will only get more accurate and more innovative allowing for better games, and when I say better I mean games that deliver a lot more substance.

I also think it was a bad mistake on Nintendo's part to create something that is so behind the times on graphics that it takes graphics out of the equation. People are generally more likely to get blown away by graphics than anything else and as the other next-gen consoles only get better there's not much the Wii can do about it.

On the other hand, no other console has brought gaming to such a relaxed level of fun, with friends and family especially. And surely this is what gaming was supposed to be about. It wasn't supposed to be about dedicated gamers who play all night for high scores to boast about but people who can have a bit of fun playing something that doesn't pretend to be something more than it actually is - a game.

When the Wii first came out i wasn't remotely intrested. then at chritsmas everyone i knew was going mental because they really wanted one and couldnt find them anywhere and i was thinking "what's the big deal?" then a couple of months ago the Wii Fit came out and my mum decided she wanted one, so she went out and bought a Nintendo Wii with the Sports game but the Wii Fit was out of stock. I still wasnt intrested, then she set it up and startd bowling, and she asked me if i wanted a go, so intrigue got the better of me, i stood in position (feeling like an idiot) and threw my ball without much effort, and missed all my pins. so i realised i needed to put effort into it, and when i started going, i couldnt stop! the determination to get more strikes than my mother was so strong! and i no longer felt like an idiot haha.

then she introduced me to tennis, and i really love tennis, and it was so much fun! and actually quite good excercise, especially for the arms! along with the boxing. and then i decided it would be better if we had two wiimote's so i ordered another, and now playing tennis against my mum, or bowling or baseball is great! i even have the hang of golf (and i hate golf) whereas my mum cant do it so good! i also bought the Endless Ocean game which my mum isnt intrested in, but i really enjoy it! We still havent got the Wii Fit (we have one reserved for next week though!) but i know it will be so much fun when we do get it.

So i definately recommend the Wii, we have never been a family that have ever sat down and played games together (apart from the odd game of scrabble) but even my dad had a go at the bowling and he NEVER plays on any console! it definately brings friend's and family's together i feel, even though there is a lot of rivalry where tennis and bowling are concerned! and i have had to eat my words over my initial thoughts on the Wii but who cares it's all in the name of fun! xx

5 out of 5 stars The future of consoles...   December 21, 2006

Last night I went to my mate's and played on their Wii for the first time. I can't begin to describe how much fun this system is. It is so different to everything that has gone before. We didn't even get on to playing Zelda and the other single player games. We were playing in a group, having so much fun and laughing hard. Isn't that what it's all about?

The controllers are amazing. I can't believe it's taken so long to put motion sensors into controllers. They will be standard on all future consoles now. No worries on that. I honestly cannot believe how well they work - they really shouldn't be this good. I read a review where the reviewer said the line of sight of the controller is only true from one point in the room. This doesn't matter at all. You see your pointer on the screen. If you need to move it to the left so you shift the controller to the left. I'm not going to be putting my eye to the controller and lining it up from there. I know where Wii says I'm pointing and I need to shift by an offset. It works becuase everything is relative and not absolute. They've changed the way games are played, and for the better. They've moved the action from the screen into the living room. It's so interactive.

Forget people dissing this because the graphics aren't as good as X,Y,Z. Blah, blah, blah. There was a time when the graphics were important. I remember seeing the graphics on a Playstation compared to a Megadrive. That told you to get a PS and that the megadrive was redundant. Not now. My PS2 will be a great console forever as the graphics look great. I'm not sure that PS3 will add anything on top of a PS2. It's the same but all the numbers in the spec are slightly bigger. Including the important number following the pound sign. Fantastic. We're at the point where doing the same but faster has to stop as the cost increment is becoming bigger and quality increment is becoming smaller.

Find a friend who has one and play on it. Make your own mind up. I was blown away.

I've missed it for Christmas but I'm lucky to have a Birthday in January. It's now top of my list. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Just to clear up a few things...   July 2, 2007

I'd just like to clear up a few points that a lot of people seem to be using in their "my console is better than yours" routine, as it gets ever-more tiresome so does the fact that people are talking complete and utter rubbish to try and get there favourite machine over in the review section.

First I'd like to point out that Wii basically comes packed with everything (as well as the excellent Wii Sports) that the 360/PS3 BASIC packs do apart from the multimedia capabilities, HD graphics and in the PS3's case: a hard drive. All the extra bits for the 360 like HD-DVD, hard drive and Xbox live have to be bought separately or via the more expensive packages.

The Wii online games like Mario Strikers charged run on a free service via WIFI. What you do have to pay for though are (obviously) the Virtual Console games (the pricing is a tad draconian for some VC titles but it does level out when you look at some of the rare tg-16 games that are available) and the OPERA web browser (it was free to download before the end of June). It's also worth mentioning that the Wii is the only console out of the three that is 100% backwards compatible, the PS3 & 360 claim to be but will only run a few titles.

For a hundred and eighty pounds, the Wii is undoubtedly value for money, people may harp on about the PS3/360's multimedia capabilities and HD graphics but as a stand alone games console, the Wii is very a attractive purchase. Not to say that the 360 and PS3 aren't, just be aware that a lot of people don't state that all the extras = more cash spent.

I got my wii,and wow its fantastic fun,its much smaller than i imagined ,but better than a great big box next to your tv,setting it up was simple, and after inserting the disc the wrong way round!(upper side goes to the right) i loaded wii sports,so easy to pick up and play and the wii remote works so much better than you think it will very accurate,i particularily like the speaker in the remote so you get the swish of the golf club,or the sighs of spirit in zelda)no longer can people complain that video games turn kids into couch potatoes i was sweating buckets after half an hour!also plays GC discs with no need for any adapter just slot the little disc in and it plays straight off!i havent managed to get mine online yet but i cant wait to download some old retro titles, also creating your own personal "mii" is a nice touch to be played in the games or saved to your remote so you can bring your "mii" round a friends house, also stick a Sd card from your digital camera and store your photos on it ready to share or view!)with the opera browser coming soon this really is a great bit of kit and a very reasonable price.Forget ps3 and xbox 360 trust me this is the one to get .
