Game of the year! June 17, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
What can i say about MGS4 well its the most amazing game i have ever played! I have not completed any of the other MGS and i know that will effect me enjoying the game much more then i should be, but i can honestly say i am enjoying the game so much even without knowing the background of the series.
The graphics are the best i have seen on any console! They are litterally mindblowing! Gameplay again is awesome using great tatics to get through the game, You go through the game using stealth and defeating 5 bosses (including Liquid) all from which you get an award from afterwards e.g Face camo (which gives you better camoflauge) from boss: laughing octopus
The game is about 15-20 hours long depending on difficulty and your skill at these kind of games, most of this is cut scenes as i have already said but that does not spoil the game, not intrested in the cut scenes? then you can skip them, all cut scenes are fully skipable, even though MGS is nothing without the cinematic story!
I would reccommend to play the others games, i regret not playing them and am not enjoying the cut scenes/story as much as i should be and instead just want to skip some of them.
MGS4 is a masterpiece, and mainly because of the spectacular cut scences, although the cut scenes can be very long, they range from 5-30mins long and 1 hour long ending cut scene but you will fully appreciate and enjoy these cut scenes if you understand them, the only downfall of this game is there is more cut scenes then gameplay but i do not see any other reason not to buy this game, even if you have not played the others like me.
Buy this game, i promise you will not regret it, the only thing you may regret is not playing the whole of this wonderful series and watching it come to end when the adventure seems like its only just begun for newcomers.

Game Of The Year
A great game with a final goodbye.......... May 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Shadow Moses Island. Alaska. 9 years ago. That was when and where some of us met Solid Snake for the first time. I remember playing a demo for MGS, which came with Silent Hill if my memory serves me correct (or it could have been the other way round...the demo for Silent Hill may have been bundled with the full game of MGS. 9 years is a long time you see and we arent getting any younger) My first impression of MGS was kind of like this 'What! THE! HELL! This is gaming heaven!!! Needless to say I fell in love with the game and the name Solid Snake has stuck in my mind ever since. Fond memories and great gaming. Literally spent my whole summer locked in my room that year. Or was it the Fall? I mean it doesnt matter really I still refused to leave the house, walk the dog, or eat anything but military grade rations. Oh yeah and I wouldnt speak to anyone unless they pretended to be using a CODEC. Pretty cool huh?
9 years on... Things have really changed in the gaming world. Companies employ the best programmers, who use the best computers, who use the best game engines to produce the best games. Companies spend millions employing recognised actors, musicians and artists to bring gaming in line with Cinema and Movies. Needless to say nowadays are exiting days to play games. Unfortunately there are a few companies out there whom dont seem to realise that the tag next gen does actually refer to the fact that the crap they are producing is meant to be fit for the new generation...money maketh the world go round but come on! I mean....some of the garbage sat on gaming shelves at the moment? A JOKE!!!
AHem. Then it arrived. He had delivered. Hideo Kojimas final outing with Metal Gear came in the form of Guns of the Patriots. YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!! Now for my take on the best game currently out for the PS3. And it is exclusive too which is a big deal for Sony.
Metal Gear Solid: Guns Of the Patriots isnt massively different from the original MGS, especially not in heart or structure. Infact it isnt that different from any of the sequel games in the series but I use MGS as the benchmark example. The main shine for MGS4 is the presentation and authentic absorbing expereince it delivers. These two things are probably lining Hideo Kojima up for a few million awards bout now, I kid you not! From the very start the atmosphere is set and its a warzone. People dying, bullets whizzing here, shrapnel flying there. Its impossible at this point not to appreciate the amount of effort and flawless design that has been smashed into the soul of this game. Snake...Old and tired picks his way across the field of battle, taking cover, sneaking past his adversaries and friends alike trying not to stand out or make too much noise. Its pretty tense and all the while the battle field lives breathes its own chaos, devouring life and bleeding with the cries for reinforcements and aid for those wounded. A terrific opening to a game that couldnt be anything less than terrific.
From there the player is treat to the old genre of sneaking and hiding but this is next gen remember. So the AI (vastly improved over the previous game : Snake Eater) is no push over. You see this time round if you get spotted you cant just put a box over your head and pretend the enemy hasnt spotted you, its an absolute must to take the right action and dispatch the soldiers after you or its a shallow grave for Old Snake. Of course if you want to make use of your Assault rifle and take the battle to the enemy then thats fine too as long as you hit em before they know what hit em, to get my meaning. Snake isnt really a one man army. No, really. He's a lone wolf that utilises the environment to suit his tactics and gain the upper hand. And thats what the player needs to do...especially if they are looking to beat the game without one alert and earn those extra goodies.
New to the series is the introduction of Weapon Customisation. It is a lovely little system involving a weapon dealer, the off loading of surplus guns and the chance to really give your firearms that bit of home loving and care. This way if the player wants to start World War 10 then he can be assured that the right tools are at his disposal for the job. Nice one Hideo.
Now the other reviews close by, Charltons and Graysons pretty much cover the lot and I cannot say much more. Fans of the series will discover a wealth of innovation and new ideas to keep them playing and playing. It surpasses the original, and I dont mean old graphics etc I mean in terms of generation so keep those hand bags down, and it delivers many answers to some terrible questions. Basically the story will fill in the blanks and shine new light on the previous games. Ultimately this is it so fans will be playing this well into the early hours. I got the same feeling playing Guns as I did from Mgs 1 and thats a good vibe to have. I felt nostalgic. A great experience indeed.
Now this is the negative part of my long winded appraoch to writing a review......new comers to the series be warned! This aint no Splinter Cell, Syphon Filter or a modern take on Assassins Creed. Right. It aint like COD4 and it certaintly doesnt wear Dantes' coat. This Is MGS. Its beautiful. Its got sneaky bits, gadgets and more video than the complete first season of Lost. But open your minds and see what a great job Hideo Kojima has done, go get the original games, do a spot of Metal Gear research and then make your minds up.
This is of course the last time we will see Solid Snake and I dont think Hideo Kojima could have done a better job regarding the farewell bash. This title is simply mind blowing, again I must praise it. I appreciate a good game but a great game like this truly deserves to stand beside the original MGS, Final Fantsy VII and of course Kings Quest 3. Only kiddin I mean Zelda. So my faith in next gen titles is for the time being completely restored and I sleep happily next to my MGS4 box every night in hope that the future of gaming remains bright and fluid.

Beats Uncharted, Best PS3 game ever made!! June 20, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
There are very few games which I feel uses PS3's full potential, Metal Gear Solid 4 is PS3's showcase. The story line is focused towards the game players who played the previous games, I was not one of these players but I picked up the story quickly and enjoy every cut scene.
The main good points of the game: 1. Play it how u want, stealth, shoot first or a bit of both. 2. Graphics are amazing, better than Uncharted. 3. Game play is exciting all the way through. 4. Story line drives the game. 5. Long play time, over 18 hours.
Best game I have ever played, well worth adding to any game collection.
Masterfully created game that breaks boundaries June 20, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
People who complain about the amount of cut scenes dont seem understand that MGS4 is the closet game to a interactive movie and that the story is so well crafted and dense that you need them to be as long as they are, but they are not poor cutscenes they are brillantly done, my mum said it best that its like a movie. Which is what MGS is about a cinematic gaming experience. It develops characters so you feel empathy for them and the voice acting is outstanding, I would love to hear the japanese as well so hopefully there will be downloaded patch for the game :)
If you own a PS3 this is a must have simple because it is in its own league and revolutionised the concept of depicting a game, I deeply hope that more games in the future will evole in how voice acting, characters,visuals/imagery, animation and audio should be done. But then they amount of things to unlock and hidden easter eggs is massive. Just go out and buy it!
Absolutely Sublime June 21, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
MGS4. What more needs to be said? I've been a hardcore fan of the series since MGS1, I did play one of the Metal Gear Games but that was a long time ago. From the time this game was announced, no, even before that; I had high expectations game but........ It was better than i thought it would have been. Hideo Kojima-San has done it again, it is a fitting end to the Solid Snake Saga & I'm sad to see the series come to an end... but it goes out with a bang.
Graphically, MGS4 has broken new grounds in this department. Running at a native 720p resolution (1280x720) however it is scalable to 1080p (1920x1080), it has shown what the PS3 is capable of & it truly sets the bar for all games to follow in terms of visuals.
Gameplay maintains the same MGS formulae that we know & love from previous MGS games with enhancements to the CQC. Camera control was something that i was concerned about before the release of MGS4, because I didnt really like how things operated with camera movement in previous titles, however my fears were put to rest with the free rotational camera.
Now the storyline, im not sure I can say much without spilling some spoilers so I'll keep it brief... It is amazing. I regularly found myself dumbfounded by the twists & turns in the storyline, & the pace at which things are released to you is staggering; you are bombarded with answers to questions throughout the game. It brings together all of the questions that were left from previous titles & it keeps you on the edge of your seat for hours on end (in my case, i found myself falling off the edge of my seat). Much of the storyline is told through cutscences, which some people may not like, however it must be said that the cutscences in this installment are cinematic GOLD!! It truly breaks a barrier in the sense that at some points it felt like i was watching a movie & not playing a game.
Now moving away from the main game, the inclusion of Metal Gear Online is worth purchasing the game for on its own. Even if they had realeased it seperately, i would have still purchased it (thank god for Dual Layer Blu-Ray DVD's eh?). It comes with only a few levels, however i assume some will be downloadable from the MGO Store (which i have yet to visit) but the levels that come out of the box (Blood Bath, Midtown Maelstrom, Ambush Alley, Gronzyj Grad) are enough to keep you happy if you dont fancy splashing out on extras, but i probably will find myself purchasing everything.
All in all, i dont think that we can expect to see a game that matches with MGS4 anytime soon. It is a truly epic game, almost too good for words to describe, just BUY IT NOW! In fact, to not have a copy of this game is a crime... no worse than that, its blasphemy. This is THE Game that 2008 will be remembered for, future generations will look back at the year that the Solid Snake Saga came to an inspiring end. However, it wont be the end for me, I see myself playing through this game atleast 4 more times this month.
I will finish with the words that many MGS fans will understand, or will come to understand after playing: "Evil Is Powerful, Courage is Solid!".
P.S. I don't mean to add fuel to the fire of the Xbox Vs Playstation Feud, but Xbox fans, you are truly missing out on this. MGS4 makes the best title on the Xbox look like a potato.
