5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars and more...   June 12, 2008

If you didn't have a reason to buy a PS3 before.. now you have! Snakes final chapter in the Metal Gear series. With cinematic and dramatics to compete with top films, Metal Gear Solid 4, is surely the must have game of the year (If not for many years).

A lot of new elements has been added, for example OctoCam, a new camouflage that will blend you instantly to any wall/floor surface. Also added, the rusty barrel, this is fun. Get in roll and knock down your enemies, don't roll to fast though as Snake will get out and throw up!

Online is solid and addictive!

Overall a must have for any Metal Gear Solid // Action games fan.

An incredibly well done and thought out game, highly playable, thrilling, complex and addictive. It is going to take a long time to get everything that it has to offer out of it. The cut scenes are overly long but it doesn't detract from the game at all. Would recommend to anyone who likes 3rd person / first person action shooters.

I am a massive fan of the MGS series so forgive me if it sounds like I'm gushing here.

For a fan of the series this is everything you could ever want and more. MGS4 resonates with powerful emotional moments whether they're during gameplay or cutscenes. It wraps everything up and brings things to a satisfying conclusion. The cutscenes are structured brilliantly and some of them have a seamless transition back into gameplay with the HUD slowing fading back in and giving you control of Snake again. That REALLY impressed me the first time I saw it and I suppose it's a shame they couldn't have managed something similar with all of them.

On the length of cutscenes I'll say this: yes some of them are long. But like MGS3 they are structured well and are placed cleverly. The longest cutscene is at the end of the game and it really beats out all of the others in terms of length. But how is that a bad thing? You'll have completed this utterly amazing game and seen the conclusion to an amazing story that stretches back 20 years over dozens of games, a short 5 minute epilogue with a screen popping up to say "congratulations you've completed the game!" would feel cheap. Like I said, throughout the rest of the game the cutscenes are nicely paced and positioned in terms of their relation to the gameplay.

Despite my love for the series I will say that I've never considered it art or that Hideo Kojima is a God. Not at all. There have always been niggling problems with the story and the delivery of it as well as quite clunky gameplay at points. MGS4 still retains the issue of rather hamfisted delivery of some of it's story and the storyline itself can be bloody hard to keep track of. But I'll give it to Kojima; he manages such a complex story that stretches back over many many years very well all things considered. The experience of the whole thing is so without peer though that even the flaws in the storytelling become minor points.

The gameplay however?

Perfect. I can say this with no doubt in my mind. The controls have been completed revamped; MGS has always felt really hard to control during big gunfights or most boss battles and this is rectified brilliantly in 4. The addition of many different camera views including an FPS mode that you can play the entire through if you really want to. The stealth options are by no means put to the side with a ton of new moves. You can rambo the game if you want and to be honest MGS4 could manage to hold it's own as a very good 3rd person/over-the shoulder shooter in its own right. But like every other MGS, you're always at a disadvantage if you're forced to fight big numbers of enemies. The warzones you fight in are lovingly detailed and constructed and the mechanics of MGS fit well in their context. You only really do the whole warzone bit in the first 2 Act's, later on the game goes back to it's roots, and some people might find it an odd change of pace. I did, but if we had been forced to do 3 Act's sneaking through a battlezone the novelty might have worn off. There are so many other aspects to things that I don't think I should bother listing them on an amazon review but I'll say this: go and read the features/gameplay list on wikipedia or something; everything it says is implemented and works brilliantly.

There are a few issues such as the default camera move speeds being too slow and some people might find the normal --> FPS view a bit odd. But these are all easily tweaked in the settings. I really didn't enjoy the Raging Raven fight (maybe I was doing something wrong) because it took too long however the rest of the B&B corps are very fun to fight and some of them are sure to whack you with nostalgia. ;)

In closing MGS4 is the perfect game for fans of the series. Could I recommend it to new players or even people who hate it? Very hard to say. The story structures itself as best it can to accommodate people who have never played a Metal Gear game before but a lot of the defining moments might not have the same emotional impact (people who have played Act 4 will know what I mean). The flashback system doesn't tell you anything much, it just flashes some images up on the screen but if you manage to hit X lots you get Drebin Points so its a handy addition. People who hate the series and hate Kojima will not have their views swayed by MGS4 I don't think. BUT the gameplay sections are long, involved and brilliantly designed and even detractors would find it hard to find much fault in them. But with a series like MGS, the story is important and so just focusing on gameplay would be half of the experience.

MGS fans: get this game.

Potential/new fans: try MGS1 & 3 at the very least.

Non-fans: you probably won't find much here. But who knows?

The end of an era. Goodnight sweet prince, you've earned your rest.

5 out of 5 stars The best game ever made???   June 17, 2008

Ive just completed metal gear 4 and i can safely say its the best game i have ever played..the graphics and cut scenes are amazing and really put metal gear into a different league in terms of production and scale of the game. The storyline sucks you in and you forget your playing a video game at some points.

I think the missions towards the end are the best my favourite being the second from last one? i wouldnt spoil it for the people who havent got it yet but if your an old school mgs fan u will love it.
The only downside to the game is the storyline it is VERY confusing and always has been but they try there best to sort it out.

Buy this game set a side a weekend and enjoy the finest game ever made.

The online is also very good i havent really got into it fully yet but it looks great

5 out of 5 stars A Little Overly Cinematic, But Still Awesome   June 17, 2008

With each game, Metal Gear Solid has brought forth countless new things and gameplay additions which have spawned other games and ideas. But the one thing that it brought to us, above all else is by far one of the greatest computer game legends...Solid Snake.

Metal Gear 4 marks the final chapter in this heroes life, based 9 years after the battle with Liquid and Metal Gear Rex it picks up with Snake as an old man, brought to the brink by Fox-Die. The game boasts stunning graphics and a top storyline, and pretty much delivers though the graphics are maybe a little lacking at times. As you'd expect, you've really two choices...sneak around and avoid enemies and killing or get in the thick of it and help the rebels in battle against the PMC soldiers. Throughout the game you're reminded of how it all started and various moments through MGS2 and 3 also via Flashbacks (activated by hitting X in cut-scenes when it prompts you to, generally you get 3-4 different flash backs so press it a few times), including a nifty little moment of being thrown back into MGS1 on the Heli-Port as Snake dreams on his way back to Shadow Moses.

The game certainly has an emotional ending, although not what many may have expected. The soundtrack is also top notch and adds to the game a lot. The only downfall is perhaps the overly long winded cut-scenes, but it's made up for by being able to skip them so you can't complain too much.

Weapons are plentiful, 69 including unlockables, and are customisable with flashlights, grips, grenade launchers, scopes, laser sights/dots depending on the weapon. Oh...and let's not forget silencers.

It's a must have for fans, and those who have been with MGS since the first will understand fully the emotions and the story line of #4. Replay value is high, as you can load another play-through with all your weapons and change difficulty each time so you don't have to start from scratch each time. There's also an Emblem system, a series of 40 awards given for various achievements in game. Some unlock things, others are simply there for satisfaction and collectable goodness. The Stealth Camo and Bandana make a return for those times where you just want to have fun. They, like most other weapons and customisable gear, can be bought from MGS4's version of "The Merchant" (from Resident Evil 4) named "Drebin".

It's truly enjoyable, and the best way to end the series, and it's good to see things finally tied up and the end brought to The Patriots, Fox-Die becomes Fox-Alive, and Snake can finally live. As Otacon says to Sunny..."Snake's had a hard life... He needs to rest"

And so with that we eco the words Big Boss says to probably PlayStation's most legendary hero -

"No longer are you a tool of war, you are free"
