Actually manages to exceed the hype! May 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ive had GTA4 now since it came out and have played it at every possible opportunity - that's at least 6 hours a day - and I'm still only at about 25% complete. The graphics are an amazing leap forward for the GTA series: the Alconquin skyline at night is stunning and entering Star Junction for the first time made me believe I was actually in Times Square. The gameplay is much improved with the new cover system working well and the Euphoria engine really shows off some ragdoll physics of bodies as they fall off a building or fly through a windshield.
For the GTA veteran the start is a little slow but once you get into it the missions are varied and intense. Not sure about the new police system - far too easy to avoid 1 or 2 stars but 4 or above and you're screwed. I've read a lot of complaints that rockstar have made the game too realistic, especially with the driving, and that want a return to the jet packs and fighter planes of San Andreas. It's just the evolution of the series and there are so many fun things to do that they are not missed by me. I'm sure that people would have complained that it wasn't different enough from previous titles or realistic enough if they hadn't made the changes they have. The GTA stories are always fantastic but this seems to me the best of them all, Niko Bellic is a great lead character who draws you in and really wins your affections.
Overall, the best game I've played and a great evolution to the series. Finally managed to get on the multiplayer servers as well and the system works brilliantly. 99% for me - only spoiled by the slow start and the unbalanced wanted (by the police) system.
Out Of This World! May 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, I am sick of seeing bad reviews based on gameplay. It's pathetic, they hype up the game and are immediately disappointed, when they have no right to be when the game is so good. As for the game freezing, I have to say, it does happen. However, I believe there is a patch that will be released to fix all problems.
Anyway, the game is amazing, graphics are superb, and that is without a HD connection. The game itself is a lot different to previous titles, based more on real-life physics rather than the "cartoony" feel of past games. The main character, Niko, will now interact with objects in many different ways due to the engine in which the game runs on. He may knock down, push aside or just walk past pedestrians. There is now 3 different ways Niko moves on foot, there is a normal walk, a jog (by holding X) and a sprint (Tapping X).
The car system is possibly the most different thing about the game. People have marked the game down for this, purely because they haven't got the hang of it yet (To be expected after just 4 or five days), the car system is largely based on how you'd drive a car in real life. You can't just drive round a corner at top speed, you have to break everso slightly. Staying with cars, you can no longer steal a parked car by opening the door and driving off. Niko will now have to smash the window (with many different animations) open the lock and hotwire the car to start it. This may seem too much, but, Niko must be skilled, as it doesn't take too long.
The wanted level system has also been revamped. When you have wanted level stars, you have to escape a certain radius (Size depends on how many stars you have) and police cars are represented on the map by a dot with spinning lights, helicopters are represented by spinning blades and boats by just dots. This will help you to decide which way to go to escape. There are also many other features whilst driving. If you crash in a car into a solid object at full speed, you will find yourself being thrown out the window. When riding a bike, you will fly off and find yourself a splat on the floor near to death.
Niko now has many methods of communication. You have a mobile phone and the use of an internet service. The mobile phone can't be used to get missions, set up dates or to just listen to someones answering machine message. You can also type in your own numbers. If you phone 911, you get the emergancy services. Police, Paramedics and firefighters are all on standby. If you phone the paramedics, they will heal you if you're hurt. You can now hail or phone a taxi to take you somewhere. The internet service is mainly for using the email service, again, used for setting up missions mostly. You can also find dates on the web.
The weapon system, again, has been revamped. There are two aiming types. Free-aim and target lock. The aim is represented by a small white dot.
The story is also supposed to be very, very good, and from what've played so far, I'd back that statement.
As you can see, the game has so many features, som I haven't even mentioned. I would give this give 9.5/10 It is seriously a must-buy.
A great game by Rockstar but always room for improvement. May 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic game by Rockstar but although there are 1 or 2 minorish problems i still give this 5 stars.
The Good: The graphics are incredible, really capturing the movement of every character and pedestrian. The buildings and definition of the and texture is superb. Glint of the sun refelcted on buildings. Realistic weather. Rain, thunderstorms, sun, cloud the graphics change to adapt to the weather. There is great detail added to the cars for example satnav in every car, search police records in police cars. Interactive headlights now feature. The police are much more realistic and so are chaces. Pedestrians can grass on you. Parked cars are no longer easily accessible. Thanks to the graphics implemented in GTA 4, Nico has to break into the parked cars and hotwire it to make his escape. Pedestrians can now call the police. Graphics: Each character in the game including pedestrians have seperate motions. While driving, you can see Nico turn the wheel, beep the horn etc. Mini-games for example bowling and mimi golf. Go to a bar and have a few drinks to test out drunk driving. Don't have a car? Never fear. You can now call a taxi to give you a ride whever you need or get your cousin Roman to send you a free cab. For the first time, Nico can ride the trains but not drive them.
The Bad: The map is smaller than San Andreas which Rockstar said is because of the extra detail to buildings and roads. This is not entirely true. The number of buildings which you can enter are very restricted. Clothes: For a modernis game one expects the character to have a sense of style. Clothes available are very 50's and 60's style.
The Missions: Very good and detailed. Fun filled game. Action packed.
The Bug: Reports came in from GTA players on the PS3. After the first few cartoony images, the game would freeze. Most gamers went to extremes and were completely formatting their hard drive/deleting save game data.
THE SOLUTION: IF YOU CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, IN THE PS3 MAIN MENU (XMB) GO TO NETWORK SETTINGS AND DISABLE INTERNET CONNECTION. ROCKSTAR ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND ARE WORKING ON A BUG FIX!!
So hopefully this review has given you a good idea of what to expect in GTA IV on the PS3.
Graphics:9.5/10 Gameplay:9/10 Missions:10/10 Audio:10/10
Happy Gaming!
Simply an incredible 3d virtual world... May 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been playing it for 2 days now in 'free roam' mode, and wow! this game IS the most detailed and interactive 3d environment ever. I'm gobsmacked by some of the sights Ive seen. Driving the speedboat around the dock areas is very realistic, and the water and wave effects are top notch. Also, flying the helicopter over the city is amazingly realistic and detailed, and copter crashes are crazy and lifelike. GTA 1V is far more immersive than the previous GTA, there's no comparison.
All that amazing detail must come at a price tho, and that price is occasional low fps for a lot of people (mainly during car chases involving lots of cop cars). Also, there are annoying glitches - such as when Niko's head and body partially disappears into walls etc if you bump him into stuff. But I can forgive all of that in exchange for having the privelage of exploring this awesome new computer-generated world that RockStar have created.
PS: I dont particularly like the sleazy/sex/drugs and prostitution theme of this game, and so I havent bothered with any of the missions, only the first part so I could get the mobile phone to key in the cheats:)
To the unlucky few May 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a shame to hear of some people experiencing bugs with the game. I'm playing it on a 60gb PS3 and haven't had a single problem (don't know if it's a problem with the different PS3s?). What I will say is that it seems Rockstar are soon to release a patch in order to fix these problems.
The game itself is nothing short of magnificent, I always know a game is special when I can't get the girlfriend to let me have a go! Don't listen to those who reviewed without playing beyond the first few missions, the experience goes rapidly from strength to strength. The large scale shoot-outs are a particular highlight.
