5 out of 5 stars The biggest and best yet.   June 6, 2008

This is the first review ive written in a while so it probably won't be perfect lol.

I'm a huge fan of the Grand Theft Auto series going all the way back to the original on the PS1 so i had big expectations for the 4th instalment and im pleased to say that it has more than lived up to the hype. The game has you take on the role of Niko Bellic who has been brought to Liberty City by his cousin Roman to make a new life, but Roman hasn't been entirly honest with Niko and the two end up getting involved with some very nasy characters. I won't go into the story to much as i don't want to spoil it for the people who have yet to play this wonderful game. The gameplay is very similar to the previous GTA's with you completing various missions for Liberty's Citys many villians. The missions vary greatly, some are fun, others are a bit dull or incredibly annoying especially the missions that involve having to chase someone (They drive me nuts lol). The story is epic and the cut scenes are brillianly done and very funny. Now onto the graphics, well, they are just amazing, they truly are, ive spent hours just flying around the city in a helicopter just looking at the view lol. There are very few glitches at least that ive noticed and the game runs smoothly enough although it can slowdown when there is a lot happening on screen. There are a good ammount of weapons in the game and they all genrally work really well, especially the rocket launcher, it's still so satisfying when you take down a police chopper lol. Like all the other GTA's, there are loads of vehicles to get to grips with, they all handle really well and can take a good ammount of damage. There aren't any planes in this game like in San Andreas, but you do get take control of a number of heliecopters. There are also boats which come in handy and are pretty fun to handle. The online is a mixed bag for me to be honest, it's good fun especially with a group of friends, but it can become repetivive after a while much like in Burnout Paradise.

Overall, i love this game, the scale of Liberty City is immense, there's so much replay value here it's unreal. Even after you've completed the main story mode, there will be so much for you to still discover and see. The game gets the full 5 stars from me :).

5 out of 5 stars Definite improvement on San Andreas   June 15, 2008

First off, I want to say that i am a long time fan of the GTA series and i think that this is probably the best of all of them. The main problem i had with San Andreas was that half way through you had to complete that stupid flight school which bored the crap out of me. However on GTA 4 there is not a single boring mission.

One of the best new additions to the game is being able to make decisions about whether to kill someone or not. This gives you a sense of power that not many other games give you. These choices also impact on the storyline which is fantastic. The two alternate endings are brilliant when you play them.

The controls for cars are more realistic which i like but i realise that many people will not, it's all a matter of preference. The combat controls have also changed slightly and i think that they are an improvement on previous GTA games especially the ability to zoom in when you look down the sights of your gun.

The storyline for this game is awesome as i have already mentioned about the endings. It centres around Niko Bellic, a recent arrival to Liberty City, and his struggle to find the man who betrayed him. He is helped along the way by characters such as Roman, his cousin who wants to make it big and live the life of luxury.

Overall this is a brilliant game and one that i would recommend to gamers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars The Biggest Game of 08 Has Its Flaws   June 19, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

On the viewing of the first trailer for GTA IV the world took a deep breath and said "Holy Crap" and that feeling carried on right up until the actual games release date when people queued for hours in anticipation of the game, but after all that hype the real question to be asked of people is, "Was it worth it?" Both yes and no for truly different reasons and with my review I plan on giving both the pros and cons to this game but I'm sad to say that they're primarily cons, but let's first focus on the biggest pro of them all.

Pro: The Attention to Detail: The Liberty City map isn't massive as we were warned in pre-release interviews of the developers, though we had the map size reduction we were given an immensely detailed surrounding. The roads, the walls, even the trees have some interesting detail to offer when simply walking around the city. You come to notice things that you start to think to yourself, was there really a point in putting that in the game when it's sacrificing the activity content of the game.

Con: The Lack of Size: As mentioned before we were given pre-warning that the map would be considerably smaller than that of San Andreas. The truly bad thing about this is that the most enjoyable thing about San Andreas was the truly divers environments contained in the massive San Andreas, yet given the smaller Liberty City we are limited to one very cliche setting of a bustling city lifestyle.

Pro: Duck & Cover/Police Search: This has to be the biggest improvement in the game altogether as it gives us a much more realistic element to the whole experience of GTA. If committing a crime there either have to be witnesses or a cop nearby, if there are none of the pre-mentioned then simply the cops wont be after you but if you have a wanted level and are driving around in hope of escaping the wanted circle but are unable to because your car is familiar to them, you have the ability to switch cars and if done properly you can drive carefully past a Police car without them being aware that it's you in the car that they're after. This makes the experience ultra realistic and along with the ability to duck & cover so if you enter into a gun fight with the police you can take cover behind a car door and keep on shooting.

Con: Lack of Stuff To Do: This is the biggest flaw in the game and really ruins the replay value of the whole game. In San Andreas there were literally hundreds of activities that you could perform at your leisure if you were bored with performing mission after mission. You could go sky diving, swimming under water, dancing, gambling etc. etc. the list goes on and on but with GTA IV we are given an immensely detailed environment but at the sacrifice of the activities and I feel this is the biggest letdown.

There are many other cons and many other pros for which I could go on about for hours but I'm going to stop at this as it's something a GTA fan should experience and decide for themselves. This should be a part of your collection as it's simply something that could be considered a part of gaming history, after all it's one of the very few game franchises that has seen its tenure cross the 3 generations of the Sony Playstation and if current sales figures indicate anything, I think we can guarantee that this will be a series to continue across many more game generations.

5 out of 5 stars More in-depth, Less crazy fun   June 20, 2008

GTA 4 is a very enjoyable game, but unlike its previous title San Andreas, there are no planes, no swimming underwater, no jetpack, no gambling etc. The storyline is very intense and more in-depth than San Andreas, but havign completed the game 100% there is little to do afterwards. A 6-star rating doesn't even summon the army to try and kill you, just a whole load more police cars. Also there are no countrysides, just a few very small parks. The cars have very detailed graphics and physics are a vast improvement on previous GTA titles. The most intense vehicle you'll get a hold of though is a chopper with machine guns...

5 out of 5 stars Very Good with a few irritations   June 27, 2008

I have given this game 5 stars but really I think it is somewhere in between a 4 and a 5. I'd give it a 9/10.

what this game does well it does superbly and I'm not going to go into detail because there are plenty of reviews doing that. the environment is stunning, the characters and acting are flawless, the internet is a great idea and works very well. The driving feels great. Mobile phone is excellent.

My only critisism is that you are encouraged to keep freinds happy to access thier special services, it puts a downer on the game. The activities involve some very poor side games like pool darts and bowling, all of which are awful, or driving miles to a restaurant or caberet which is repetative. I found myself wanting to unlock the second island and therefore wanting to work through missions and had no interest in keeping people happy at all. I think if the activities that you do with freinds were more varied and played better that idea would be ok maybe.

This may stop the game from being perfect in my opinion, but the overall experience is wonderful and immersive and a big improvement on the series without losing the GTA feel.
