5 out of 5 stars Welcome back GTA!   May 3, 2008
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

I have only had GTA IV for a day and I must say so far I think it great!

The graphics are good quality, from shadows to human faces. Stealing cars is alot more realistic, as now it is possible to break ito cars even if locked, and some old cars dont start first time.

As usual there are plenty of things to do whilst roaming including going to strip clubs, going drinking, having tours of Liberty City by taxi and helicopters, going bowling, and much more (I havn't played enough to discover all attractions and such. You can go on dates with your girlfriend, or call one of your friends for a night out or even to arrange a mission.

The first few missions, as with previous Grand Theft Auto games and quite basic and designed to get you used to the controls of weaponary and cars. These missions remain fun as they get harder and more intense.

Alot of people are criticising the handling of vehicles. I agree with the fact they are trickier to handle than cars in previous editions of GTA, however once you get used the controls you will value how realistic the driving feels.

A few other minor improvements from the previous GTA editions, are things like being hit by cars and flying through the windscreen when hitting an object at high speed, also there is a huge variety of pedestrians on the streets and you rarely see the same person twice!. Just small things give a more realistic feel to the game.

Overall, this is a great game which in my opinion has lived up to the hype. I havnt tried the multiplayer mode yet, which I know is a huge part of GTA IV, however from what I have seen, heard and played, Grand Theft Auto IV is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Best Game Available.   May 6, 2008

This is, without doubt the best game available on the 360.

Initially, I found the driving, as previously described, a little difficult. But you soon get the hang of it.
You actually have to be able to handle the cars now V and they all handle very differently. If you prang a car, its handling changes V as would a real car. They dont always blow up either. Smash them enough and they just stop working. This all adds to you having to handle the cars a lot differently than before. Its different to previous GTA releases V and this is a good thing.

The map is just immense. Ive put in a lot of gaming hours so far, and I havent seen most of the areas through the missions. The details on each building is just amazing. Graphically, the game is excellent. If you feel its too dark in part (I did) then adjust the settings in the game. Easy done.

Its all the little touches that make this game what it is too.
You can whistle a cab and they stop.
You can call the police.
When going in reverse in a car, Niko actually puts his right arm on the passenger seat and looks out the back window.
I could go on.

All in all, this is a massive improvement on previous GTA releases. The game has now evolved to next generation.

5 out of 5 stars Rather good actually.   May 1, 2008

Firstly, I think the hype could really do with relaxing, because frankly it harms the product by setting people's expectations ridiculously high. This game neither solves world hunger nor will it make you irresistable to the opposite sex. It does, however, redefine levels of narrative involvement in video games bringing to the table plotting and characterisation not often seen in cinema, let alone video games.

Niko's is, in particular, a spectacular piece of social observation, embodying society's vague disappointment with the modern age, and self loathing in his oh too clear knowledge on 1) how it came about, i.e. at the expense of those who cannot afford to keep up and 2) how he came to experience it i.e. through a process that no-one could be proud of.
It is a brilliant example of the inevitable disappointment of the 'grass-is-greener' mentality which is so often optimistically ignored.

The rest of the cast are (even the real so-and-sos) lovingly rendered and enjoyable to watch and interact with with hammy affectations of movement and speach adding to their vibrancy.

On the technical side, I couldn't help but be genuinely impressed. This feels like an actual place. The weather is convincing, the people are varied and, well, human-like and the interaction with it all is of a higher calibre than I have experienced before. The fighting feels much meatier than in the past, well animated and genuinely quite visceral and affecting, especially during firefights. Subtleties in character animation means there is a definite emotional reaction to shooting someone or knocking someone out, further bringing weight to the virtual world. The driving is now much weightier and solid-feeling too, creating a very convincing illusion of a one and a half ton frame of metal with an engine and wheels.

This game is an immersive, atmospheric, unique triumph and marks a definite positive event in the evolution of videogames as a medium. It is, however, a relative slow-burner. Whilst it does immediately kick off in style and carry on as such, it does take time to build momentum, giving the player time to grow used to the controls (particularly with the vehicles, which are radically modified from previous games). As an example, it is to San Andreas what Apocalypse Now is to Saving Private Ryan. Not as immediately bombastic but, in the end, infinitely more rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars You get what you expect - pure genius   April 30, 2008

First off I own both consoles but went for the 360 version as it will have exclusive downloadable content and propbably be better online.Got the game delivered from a different site when it was released (yesterday).

The game looks really nice and graphically is up there with the likes of gears of war etc - the only difference is the gta has so much going on in the environment and it's like you're actually in the ciTo address some of the issues made like the darkness - put the in game brightness up! The speed, although slower is more realistic and does not detract from the game in any way. The driving is not a problem at all and although one reviewer says that it is near impossible, do not listen to this, the game does require breaking (more realistic) and if you'e played others you'll get the hang of it. Even if you haven't it is pretty easy to pick up.

There is so much going on in the city, you can just stand around and watch the people running from cops, bums asking you for a spare dollar or you can hot wire a car and drive around.

I've only played the game for a few hours so not too far into the story but so far it seems good and has got me wanting more al the time.

The addition of the mobile is a nice touch with customiseable ringtones and stuff.

Not yet played online but epecting great things.

All in all it doesn't really matter if you're reading this becasue in all likelihood you're gonna get this game (when you actually can), you won't be dissapointed by ho in depth it is and how well it plays.

5 out of 5 stars Great Expectations - Great Game!   May 13, 2008

Not wishing to prejudice my review I've played GTA IV (Work + Girlfriend permitting) for over a week and having got around 40% through I thought I'd be in a better place to pass judgement than if I'd posted earlier.

Well, I'm impressed! What a game! The first GTA I ever played was the original on my PC, from then on the evolution has been awesome. Gone are the cartoony graphics and repetitive feeling of the backdrop. GTA IV is simply a great game that gets better the further you get into it.

The introduction of a mobile phone, side games such as pool and bowling, internet cafes and taxi rides have helped revolutionise the game play with the story and graphics adding to this by increasing the pull and enhancing the overall feel.

Most of the features that made this a best selling game before remain and it is quite conceivable to go for long periods without playing a single mission.

Some have made complaints about the handling of the cars and the way the game looks. The cars are fine, some handle better than others and no matter what you will get the hang of it. For me, a guy whose first computer was a ZX Spectrum, I think the game looks and plays fantastically well.

I've read many positive reviews about this game and seen it given many 10/10 scores or 5 star rating and to be honest after I'd played the first hour or two I was thinking, what has changed? However, it is not just a regurgitation of what has come before. I know now that that initial feeling of disappointment has been blown away by a thrilling, addictive game that will hopefully do the same to you.

An absolutely cracking game! For once the build up and expectation have been matched by the end product.
