5 out of 5 stars So far, so good!   April 30, 2008

I've only managed to play this game for about 3 hours so far last night but I'm very impressed with everything I've done and seen.

There are lots of things to get used to which are different from previous GTA games. I've read other reviews on here about people who hate the driving style and I'll admit, it takes a bit of getting used to but it's much more realistic that it's predecessors, requiring you to think more ahead when driving at speed and I've been able to avoid 2 police chases so far without much difficulty. I think, as in real life, some cars handle better than others and I found a car which looks like an M3 that handles really well.

The behaviour of the people in Liberty City is great, behaving as you would expect people to rather than one dimensional cannon fodder. They get scared if they see you carrying a gun, they run for cover if you are firing near them. If you crash into someone while driving, they may get out and try to start a fight with you rather than fleeing at the speed of sound as in previous GTA games. I crossed the street early in the game expecting a cab coming around the corner to stop on a six pence (like previous games), but instead he hit my character. The driver then got out and started swearing at my guy, so after a short fist fight I acquired a few dollars and a cab to drive around in.

It took me a few goes to get used to the combat system. The targeting system is a significant improvement as is using cover but I can't get used to having a separate button for melee attacks, keep hitting the fire button to punch people. The whole block/counter attack system seems needlessly complicated at this point, but I'm sure we will all get used to it.

The cut scenes are excellent and it feels like a proper story is evolving but I'd recommend turning on the subtitles as the heavy accents of the some of the characters can mean you miss some of the things they say. I'm also impressed with using mobile phone as a way to kick start missions and stay in contact with characters as a way to gain access to extra abilities.

I love the graphics, which are better than I expected. There are some fuzzy light effects which put me off at first and the way it is properly dark at night can take some getting used to but I think it looks a whole lot more polished and less cartoony now. The sound effects are spot on but I'm a little disappointed with some of the radio stations so far. I used to love the talk radio of the last 3 games but so far the new one hasn't made me laugh as much. Having a TV in your apartment to watch the shows is a nice evolution of the radio station content however. I'd like to see some additional radio station material available for download in the future and I'm hoping I can add custom music tracks to listen to (as in the previous games), which I'm sure is there but haven't checked for yet.

I also haven't played the multiplayer mode yet but it does sound very good and I'm sure I'll enjoy playing it. The interface sounds a lot like the one I've been using with the most recent Burnout game, where you can jump right in from the single player game.

There are lots of excellent little touches so far, an excellent story and I'm sure the game will continue to show off as I progress to the other islands and harder missions. If you liked the previous GTA games and are willing to accept that some game play aspects will present new challenges, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars best game of 2008   May 1, 2008

do you know that feeling when you boot up a game & you expect it to be good but you just dont know!! that's how i felt loading up gta4 without having read any of the reviews
& all i can say is wow. this is is the kind of game that you buy a next gen console for, there have been plenty of great games on the 360, call of duty 4, assassin's creed spring to mind but nothing has grabbed me like this since i bought the machine. the depth & scope of the city is unbelievable it really feels like a bustling new york 'liberty city.'' the range of vechicles in the game would put pgr4 to shame. i had this game on release day & have not put it down yet & you just know there's so much more to come. the characters in the game have so many different personalities which brings the game to life. i played vice city to death when it came out so time will tell if it tops the longevity of that game.
i would put this at the top of your games list for 2008,
its awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars An improvement   May 2, 2008

You'll get mixed reviews of this product on here but i have a Sony Bravia 1080P TV and connected to my HDMI 360 it looks really good.

The change in gameplay is significant.

The main differences being the take cover option while shooting and the breaking into cars with eagle eyed pedestrians calling the police on their mobiles.

I own GTA 1, 2, London, 3, Vice City, San Andreas as well and have played them when they first came out so i've witnessed the evolution of the series.

To be honest a lot of Liberty City looks different to when it did in GTA 3 and i'm not talking about the much improved graphics - i'm talking about the street layouts, buildings and lighting.

It's a very good game and worth a punt.

If you're worried about a game having 4/5 stars on here then by all means wait 4-6 months and you'll probably be able to pick it up for half price (used of course).

Although i have over 2 dozen games i BOUGHT THE 360 A YEAR AGO SPECIFICALLY TO PLAY THIS GAME (all previous versions i had on pc).

I really like it and the lack of big name stars doing the voices means there was more money to spend on the graphics which are great

Game come to today played it for a few hours on single player and was very happy with the game, some people dont like the more realistic side of the game but i personally think it is great, game as great graphics and physics, also very very fun on xbox live when you team up with some friends and go cause some trouble :)

5 out of 5 stars Gameplay improvement?   May 4, 2008

First things first, this is an amazing game - best out at the moment, and for this reason it has to get 5 stars. I received it the day before it came out (Monday) and 22 hours of play later, have completed the 90 or so missions of the main story and am now left feeling rather disappointed by the whole experience - it certainly wasn't as fun as previous games and in fact some of the previous games `realistic' features and content has been removed. The major new features are: the graphics (which are very good), the game physics (driving takes a bit to get used to but is realistic once you get the hang of it) and the mobile phone (which does everything).

But when you compare say the GTA IV map to San Andreas, for me the disappointment starts: Liberty City is basically four main islands of dense urban or industrial area connected by bridges (and one tunnel), and the trouble with it is, that block after block is often the same looking which in the end is just boring (you end up taking a cab often because the driving is just tedious - the average journey consists of the same scenery over and over again.) compared to the completely different areas of San Andreas (countryside, desert, cities etc...), SA's map was definitely better (as a map not graphically).

Another observation is there don't seem to be as many different types of the vehicles, and the aircraft have basically been scrapped when compared to SA - you can only get two different types of helicopters (the standard GTA maverick and a black hawk with machine guns) - no planes and no more parachutes either, and in addition it is actually a pain to fly anywhere because there are only 2 places where you can get a helicopter and landing in a dense urban area normally results in damage!

Another problem is that you no longer have any garages to keep your cars (the car you most recently drove just stays parked where you left it) - now it isn't as if owning a garage is unrealistic so I don't understand why they have scrapped them.

One of the major new features is the mobile and internet and the way they link into your `friendships', which does add realism but once the novelty has worn off they are just annoying, because you get called up the whole time and asked to come bowling or something, which is why the `friends' is step of realism too far. You want them to be a friend because then they provide you with a service (free taxis, free helicopter transfers, free guns etc) but I don't really want to/ find it fun having to go and play darts with some person who keeps ringing you up because it takes 10 minutes in real time to drive to pick them up actually play through a whole game of darts and then drop them back home etc, and refusing to go means they like you less and so you won't get the extra features...

And finally probably the most bizarre thing is that after finishing the main story I have $800000 (and after the side missions could be a millionaire), but you can't buy property or businesses anymore so the most expensive thing to buy it on is a RPG - $5000 (which is a one off purchase anyway because will only have to buy ammo not an whole RPG again...) so I am not really sure what the point of being paid is....? Additionally after finishing the game despite having killed anyone you wanted in the mob or stolen from whatever you wanted, you still seem to be a low level gun for hire with no businesses etc despite having almost a million dollars - doesn't really make sense...?
