5 out of 5 stars oblivion - current king of games   August 15, 2007
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

Wow. that is the simple way to put it. before this game was even out, i was reading up on it on the website. as soon as it was, i began saving money to get a pc capable of running it. but then i heard it was coming out on ps3. i am a ps fan, as they are always reliable. as soon as the game was out i got it.
and it did not disappoint. the graphics are stunning, only enhanced by the ps3. the game runs so smoothly, with no loading screens lasting more than 15 seconds, and the controls are easy to master. there are no jolts as you just stroll around, unless there is a sudden huge change in the area you are in (e.g. - about 50 burning dogs falling onto a scared town of cat-men). even then this only lasts for a few seconds.
but now for the gamplay itself. the first thing which struck me was how much improved the combat is since morrowind, it's predescessor. swords axes and whatever weapons you can think of on there are all used realistically. the power attack feature is brilliant, as it often makes you life easier while looking cool. magic has also improved. spells have brilliant effects and are likely to send people flying. paralsis spell are one of the most fun. you can cast on someone, then sit back and laugh as they topple into the water nearby. one improvement im thankful for is how opponents now die. instead of falling in one of a small number of preprogammed ways, they fall realistically. after all, it made no sense to hit a man with a battle-axe straight in the chest, and have him fall towards you.
the knights of the nine questline and weapons added in is another great feature of the ps3 version. it is almost as gripping as the main quest itself, or indeed almost any the well though out quests.
this is a must have for ps3 owners.

5 out of 5 stars you just dont get bored   May 4, 2007

The 2nd game i own on the ps3. when i frist got the game in the post i was thinking it would another over hyped let down. but was i wrong. i just cant stop playing. for one thing its so large. ive been playing for about 20 hours have only seen about 25% of the world. it is very user friendly, and very open. there isnt much you cant do. how can you get bored when every thing you do is so different. they must have worked long and hard to make a world so real and deep. this is a must buy game for a ps3 owner. if you do buy this game, be sure you've got some hoilday spare, your need it.

5 out of 5 stars simply great   February 15, 2007

first off ignore the last reviewer the ps3 version will still have to load off the disc the way the 360 version does, just because blu-ray has over five times more space than the 360 discs doesn't mean there won't be any loading. secondly (just so we're clear) you don't need to be connected to xbox live to USE any downloaded content only to download it and this will be the same on the ps3.

As for the game it's amazing (if you've played morrowind you maybe be left wanting) you create a character from ten different races, four types of elves, four types of men and two types of beasts. You can have a stealth, magic or strength character or anything in between it's up to you. "it's up to you" that really sums up the rest of the game too you could follow the main story line, do side quests, just a faction like the fighters guild, or just go on a rampage and kill and steal as you please.

one thing that really does strike me about this game is it's beauty, I'll be travelling from one place to another when I'll notice how lovely the landscape is, I couldn't count the number or times I've come from the nothern city Bruma along the road and been left with a beathtaking view of the imperial city.

one extra thing to note about the ps3 version is it comes with "the Knights of the Nine" download for free the rest the developers are saving as to not unbalance the game too early for new players.

(my overall point is that this is a really nice game I don't care what platform you get it for and anyone that calls someone a fanboy because they failed to point out which version is better when either way you still end up with a great game is clearly a fanboy themselves.)

April 24th Edit:

"if you've already played The Elder Scrolls on the other platforms, then its description here is a familiar one. That familiarity makes sense given that the game is practically the same adventure its counterparts were in 2006. Indeed, with few exceptions, the content in Oblivion PS3 is nigh-identical to its brethren in every way. Whether you're playing through the Daedric missions, the Faction quests, the Master Training segments, or the brutal Arena challenges, you're getting what's essentially an unchanged experience.

Well okay, it's mostly unchanged...

So what's different? For one, the majority of downloadable content available on PC and Xbox 360 didn't make the deadline. That means that Mehrunes' Razor, the Vile Lair, the Wizard's Tower and other post-release goodies are nowhere to be found (and that includes this month's "Shivering Isles" expansion). There isn't a clear answer as to whether or not users will ever be able to download these add-ons either -- so there's a definite possibility that what you see is what you get.

Multiplatform users who have been holding out in hopes of getting the "best looking version" should still gravitate towards a pumped-up PC. But, as I mentioned earlier, the PS3 version of Oblivion is a definite technical improvement over the 360 edition.

Even if you have the latest Xbox patch installed, this newest port holds an advantage with its quicker loading times"

-Jeremy Dunham, IGN, March 07 PS3 Oblivion Review

Regardless of all that this is still a great game on any platform and by the time you get anywhere close to finishing this game the rest of the downloads will be available for the PS3 version anyway.

The reason I reviewed this game is because I wanted more people to play this game, and this being the first time the elder scrolls have been on a playstation I thought that was enough reason to recommend this game.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've ever played   July 8, 2007

This is a wonder of modern gaming. It has everything I think that a good game should have, plus the extras to make it excellent. Good graphics,a large free-roaming world, a very clever storyline, magic, guilds, monsters and other amazing features. You choose a race (there are 10 to choose from), your name, your characters look, gender, your characters birthsign (which affects your skills) and your class (loads to choose from; e.g. Mage, Barbarian, Knight, witch-hunter, etc.) These affect the whole way you play the game, ranging from the brave melee combat fighter, always standin ground, to the elusive thief, sneeking by the enemy and stealing to get his pay. You're character is constantly changing throughout the game. He/She levels up making him/her stronger and you can change what you wear and use. You can even become a vampire! (sadly, no werewolf disease is in the game.) There are many guilds to choose from (Arena: Gladitorial Battles, Dark Brotherhood: Assasinations, Mages Guild: magic tuition and defence, Thieves Guild: Thievery and many more.)

In the game your enemies a very diverse ranging from giant sewer rats, to large titans made of rock. Sadly, for Elder Scrolls fans, Dragons have no part in the game as they did in the previous Elder Scrolls. However many new types of enemy have been placed in the game.

The only bad things about the Elder Scrolls are that it can be too large!, the quests despite generally being very easy to understand can sometimes be very frustrating as you ponder what the heck you're supposed to do once you've done one task in a quest, even though a quest info bar is presented to you after a certain stage has been reached. Also, I think the game days pass too quickly (1 game minute passing in about 3/4 real seconds!!!)
I also don't like the way that most enemies level up at the same rate you do, so at level 1, Palace Guards are at level 11. When you get to level 2, these same guards are level 12, making them always stronger than you!!! This can lead to the game gettin almost impossibly hard in your mid level 20's, despite the game difficulty slider in the options menu.

Good things though, are the new (new as in; didnt have it in Elder Scrolls III) mini-map in the top corner of your screen and the fast travel feature in your journal, that alows you to skip from the place you're at, to a place that you've been to before in a matter of minutes, rather than having to walk/ride all the way there. There are also updates on the Xbox 360 (definitely) and the PS3 version (I think) that can be purchsed from their internet. This leads to new weapons, lands, items and creatures present in the game.

5 out of 5 stars The best RPG I've played, but it's not perfect   July 11, 2007

IF you like RPG games, there are many things to enthuse about with this game
- While there are linear elements, the non-linear way you can play the game is very refreshing
- The graphics are first class
- The size of the game is great
- The subtleties of the game are enormous and there is a huge amount to discover and learn.
- You feel like you've been dropped into different world and the world effectively reacts to how you interact with it.
- Character development is rewarding with the various guilds.

However there are a few areas that could be better
- The fighting system is very simplistic, each fight ends up being block, hit, block hit, blast with magic etc.. which can get dull after a while, since it's basically a combination of three buttons. Where are the different fighting moves ?
- The small 'menu of predefined questions' approach to communicating with other characters is rather limited and old hat.
- The menu system does well for such a complex game, but it could be quicker to get to the item you want
- The oblivion gate sections are pretty similar and there are lots of them

Overall I'd say it's the most impressive, inventive and advanced RPG I've played and is very rewarding. In terms of sheer fun, I'd say it is more rewarding than fun, in the way a simulator is more rewarding than an arcade game. If you are a fan of RPG games though, this is a must have.
