5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, great format, but not as much improvment as you'd think   July 6, 2007
21 out of 33 found this review helpful

I won't review the actual movie here as there are ample reviews, let's just say its great.
What I am reviewing is the blu ray version, there is no doubt about it, it is the best quality of any movie I have ever seen in my life, but guess what? I would say Hi Defintion is only about 5% better than regular DVD.

That might surprise a lot of people, but the fact is, I have the regular version of this movie too and I compared them both together on a top notch Hi Def TV, and a PS3 and an upscaling regular DVD machine that also uses an HDMI cable and was set at the same reslution, because it's an up to date movie shot in 2006 the picture quality of the regular version is sensational anyway, now how can you top that? well when it's that good there's only so much more improvement you can make, and I'd say that improvment was 5% better, but that 5% does make it look fantastic, I too watched and marveled as I saw the individual hairs on the mongoose in the fight scene with the cobra, but when I put the regular dvd in, I could still see them! Truth is if you have an upscaling DVD player and an HDMI cable and a good TV, then there is no real reason to bother paying more or replacing old movies for the new format, there really isn't, don't believe all the hype, it's just a cash in to sell movies all over again to the public, even old movies made into Hi Def won't compare to the regular version of Casino Royale.

When a lot of people see a huge difference it's usually because they have old DVD players using the composite scart socket on their TV connections, or shared scarts on the RGB scart socket which reduces quality noticeably, (incidentally this is why American's rave about HD because they don't have RGB Scart over there and all use composite and their DVD's look terrible in comparison), it's not surprising when you play an HD movie through an HDMI socket and at a higher resolution picture you see a big improvement, but don't be fooled, its not all down to the blu ray, save your money, buy the regular version of this film and upscale if your DVD player does that.

5 out of 5 stars At last - no PAL speed-up!   April 14, 2007

The Blu-Ray release of this film blows the socks off its DVD inferior (yes, I'm geeky enough to have bought the two versions for comparison).

No blocky picture and pure, uncompressed PCM audio.

And - the icing on the cake - it plays back (at least on my on my PlayStation 3) at the correct, cinematic speed of 24 frames-per-second and not the 4% faster 25fps as is invariably the case with DVDs or TV broadcasts of made-for-cinema films. I hope this correct speed reproduction isn't just limited to "All regions" Blu-Ray releases.

5 out of 5 stars 3 times of a movie   April 16, 2007

Casino Royale: Format: Blu Ray: Rating's out of 10: 10/10
Blu Ray features:
The Gun Barrel with the blood flowing down is so life like in HD
The chase between Bond & Mollaka looks stunning
Bonds Aston Martin DB5/DBS looks so wicked
Daniel Craig's Jagged face looks more jagged than ever
the car crash is stunning
the only thing wrong with this movie is:
that it ends.......
oh what the heck just watch it again

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for Blu Ray   February 25, 2008

This is an excellent film and a must have if you own a PS3 (or other Blu Ray player) and a HDTV. The difference in picture quality between this and a normal DVD is amazing, you can see little details on everything. It makes every scene of the movie look like a work of art, the definition on even the smallest details such as scars on people's faces or the bricks on the wall is jaw-dropping. As for the movie, well it's most likely the best bond movie ever, there are some impressive set pieces, and some pretty intense moments that seemed to be lacking in some of the more recent bond films. Daniel Craig fits the part perfectly and has made this role his own.
