Bohoo, everybody gets onto the subject of licensing August 13, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Cannot wait for this to come out, especially as i am planning to buy a ps3 with the game, it surely shouldnt dissapoint. People always go into the sorely boring subject of fifa over pes, fifa comes on top on licensing alone, pes is far superior in gameplay, if licensing matters so much to all the corporate whores out there get yourself a patch that you can easily put onto your memory card and it not only change the players names, but it will also edit the kits and badges.... It really is that easy. im also sure with the handy wi-fi and free use of it as well on the ps3 there will be an even easier way to do it then in the past.. Im almost peeing my pants in anticipation for the arrival, and if it does dissapoint i will eat both the cd of pes 2008 and my ps3..
Time to bring some balance November 2, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Everyone giving this game two stars either has dogdy eyesight, is playing it drunk, or are guilty of some serious bandwagon jumping. I probably played PES 6 on the PS2 for 200+ hours and this new PS3 version is an improvement in every way. I can't help but feel people really want to bash Sony some more and are just not keeping things in perspective. I have now given more than 20 hours to this game over the past week, mainly on the master league, and it is really great!
The AI of the computer is much improved. I have always played on the highest difficulty settings and even weak teams are giving me a massive challenge on this version. For example AI players perform a much more variety of attacking tactics. Previously they always seemed to do the same thing. Now they shoot from distance (40 yards plus!), play pin-point through balls, mazy dribbles into the area, headers from corners - anything you can think of. In PES 6 the AI nearly always missed direct shots from free-kicks, and now even weak teams are pinging them into the top corner from 30 yards (on the highest difficulty setting mind), making giving away free-kicks on the edge of the box suicidal. Furthermore to breakdown opposition defences you must keep your attacking play imaginative and unpredictable, as AI defenders cover space and easily stop your attacks if you rely on the same manouver for every game.
Further improvements are the graphics which really are brilliant especially in close-up. The commentary is by FAR the best seen in any PES: they actually say things that relate to how the game is proceding (i.e. who scored first, if there has been a large comeback, if you had a lot of chances but failed to score), and most impressively will change their commentary depending on the course of the league (i.e. first/last games of the season, important games etc).
Most importantly the master league is much better! Both division 1 and 2 have far more teams in the leagues (20 teams per league I think), making the campaigns longer and more satisfying. Negotiation for players is better: each player has a number from 0-100 to indicate whether they want to join you. Your popularity as a team increases as you win games or decreases as you lose them. Also there are more people in the stadiums if you are doing well, and less if you are not (this is really cool surprisingly!) The presentation is also much better and there is much more of an attempt to keep you aware of your position in the calender and what games are coming up.
Lastly the supposed slow-down has been widly overstated! There always has been a bit of slow down in PES games when things get a bit hectic, and I haven't been bothered by it. It certainly isn't severe enough to affect the gameplay. I haven't tried the online features yet, but PES6 games were pretty laggy so I never really got into this feature.
The only downsides I can see is that the menu music is absolutely terrible - I actually liked the PES menu music in the past, and the referees give yellow/red cards for 90% of the failed sliding tackles which is a bit annoying.
Conclusion: I love PES, and I love this game - it's the best yet! (I should know I have played every iteration since PS1 days and I still played PES 6 until recently - I get the impression other reviewers haven't played PES 6 in a while perhaps).
Great game after update January 4, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I got a ps3 and this game for my xmas and as i hadnt connected my ps3 to the net yet i got the original game on an older ps3 firmware. i played it on a 42 inch tv with a scart cable and i couldnt believe how jumpy and unsmooth it was. Then i connected my ps3 up to the net and updated the firmware on that and pro evo and what a difference! I also got an HDMI cable and its so good. It's a totally different game from the ps2 version and really realistic.
Now the online play is another thing. I went on and had a few games and it was really unplayable and annoying. One minute you were making a great challenge and the next the mans past you with the ball!
The way i play online now is to look for people with a 3 bar rating on the connection screen. If you get someone with 3 bars the game is at its best. 2 bars is good although there is one or 2 minor errors. 1 bar is just playable although a few major errors and a red line means totally unplayable so dont touch them with a bargepole!
hope that helps.
C u online!
PES, still alot better than Fifa October 31, 2007 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Pes has gone down a bit in performance, this game is not as good as the old one but hell is it still better than fifa. Disapointing gameplay and the camera bouncing about brings the game down but there is still alot to alot to love about this game. Fifa 08 is once again a horrible game with bad gameplay and unrealalistic players. In fifa you can score from the half way line with ease! You can score 15 goals in one half! Now what is up with that, also what is with the goalkeepers, if you are in the box and about to shoot they some how are able to strech their arms and gather the ball! so althou Pes 8 is not as good as the old one this year its still a hell of alot better that Fifa!
Completey fixed!!! November 29, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although the game did suffer from lag slightly offline and massively online, the new patch which can be downloaded when starting the game has completely fixed it!! paving the way now for one of the best pro ev games if not the best, the passing is so slick and beating a defender is alot easier than recent years, the true pro ev and indeed football fans will now get to play the finest football game, one word superb!!!
