Out of the Haze May 25, 2008 Haze was announced what seems like a decade ago. It really was a long time, but after delay after delay, it is finally released.
The game was really exciting people, until the demo was released. For some reason, that demo made an awful lot of people lose interest completely.
Well, if you played the demo, and enjoyed it, you will be pleased to know that the full game is all a lot more fun. That is probably the most boring level in the game, and after it, everything becomes very exciting and interesting.
But the real fun comes when you become a rebel. You have so many new abilities, and it is much more fun.
This game was originally known as the PS3s answer to Halo, amongst the fanbase. It was supposed to revolutionise FPSs. Everyone was really excited. Then everything was lost, when people realised it wasn't quite as good as the hype. But it's still an above average game, definetly worth a purchase, and dare I say it: The best game I've played on the PS3.
Unjustified 'overhyped' criticism May 30, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Well, according to usually reliable internet site reviews (!) Haze is the 'Lair' of 2008! Seems to me this now infamous review is more 'hyped' than the original media circus surrounding Haze. I just wonder how much Mr Gates paid the reviewer at the aforementioned website!! Admittedly, not the ground-breaking 'Halo' killer it was meant to be - but all in all an extremely solid shooter, which at it's heart has a user-friendly and (dare I say) excellent user interface - very easy to pick up and great 'fun' (something missing from a lot of modern gameplay) to actually play. Interesting storyline, not particularly well realised with OTT and cheesy dialogue, but it draws you in enough to keep playing. Now onto the 'alleged' abomination which are the graphics - a total untruth!!! A little behind the time let's say, but constant framerate, no loading during gameplay, nice smoke effects, reasonable to actually decent character animation - the only downside being some of the rather bland backgrounds - hurried and unfinished. I've played it through to it's single campaign end, thoroughly enjoyed it, and haven't cried once 'cos it's not COD4!! I'm not a 'graphics whore' I just like being entertained - I have been.
Why whinge about one off of the very few decent PS3 Exclusives? May 26, 2008 13 out of 20 found this review helpful
Firstly let get the obvious out the way Haze is a bit of a disappointment one again we have spent months (many of them thanx to delays) listening to how great Free - Goldeneye,Timesplitters- Radical next gen game is going to be from mags and websites, and we are where expecting something truely amazing! What we have recieved is a solid shooter with a great multiplayer and simple but effective story line.
But sadly the disppointment has been too much for many to bear and have critisied it beyond all reconigition! IGN's review of 4.5 and Gamecentrals review of 3 out of 10 is just ridiculous! I mean just look at other games they have given the same score then play Haze and you can not honestly agree.
I am roughly half way through Haze and I admit I almost cancelled my pre order for this game, but as I have a XBOX 360 which takes up most my time my PS3 has become increasing un-used. So I thought I would get the first PS3 exclusive in ages and judge it for myself.
Haze plays very well the presentation of the game is very good the mantra blacks and yellows are throughout the menu system and looks smart. The game opens in a frantic fire fight where you taught the basics of Nectar pretty quick. Your fellow Mantra Soldiers are very funny really gun ho american (who sound like most Xbox Livers) have been completely blinded by the Nectar drug into ignoring the horrors of war. There banta is very amusing as the cheer and shout at enemys deaths. But before too long the lead character realises that there Nectar is just a way of mind control and soon realises he is fighting for wrong side. No granted the story will not win any oscars neither will the voice acting but it keeps you interested enough to keep playing.
The graphics that have seemed to upset so many people are not that bad I have seen worse. They seem to range from very good for example the Mantra Soldiers look great equally as detailed as the Master Chief in Halo. From the quite bland and bad for example the swap level the graphics look almost unfinished. I am not graphics whore and can live with this.
Haze keeps getting comared to Halo and for good reason they are very similar even the name Haze/Halo suggests this is not by accident. The vehicles for example are virtually the same as Holo (but not as many) there are is a humvy type jeeps with mounted Machine guns that up to 4 mantra soldiers can jump on. There also quad bikes which are the same as Halo's mules, they all handle very well and break up the FPS action.
The whole Nectar gimic is pretty much unders used as you are only a Mantra soldier for the first 2 levels then you become a rebel. Now this is where the fun begins, using the nectar against the moronic mantra Soldiers is great fun.
The multiplayer is also really good fun, it is very eash to work as a team and you can get involved in some great shoots out and is a lot easier to play and get into than say Warhawk! Its true there are not many modes but Team Deathmatch is always my favourite anyway. as I am sure your are also aware the there is a 4 player co-op mode for the whole campaign which is great. This can be jumped in and out of like Gears of War so if enjoying single player but are are struggling just switch to co-op and bring some mates on. The online side of Haze is very good and is really limited by the somewhat naff PS Network.
So in short Haze is not the "must have title" we all hoped for but is not half as bad as the reviews make out. I have noticed tho that Ubisoft did not release a review code previous to release, this always upsets mags and website hence the bad review bandwagon they all seem to jump on. Haze is not really Sonys answer to Gears of War or Halo but there is solid shooter here give it ago!
Haze got a raw deal! June 5, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The problem with Haze is quite simply the hype that preceded it. If you pick it up with no expectations, you get a simple but fun FPS with a nice online component and a reasonable story and graphics. If you expect it to be a "Halo killer" or the best FPS of all time, you'll be disappointed and you will hate it. Haze starts with you as a soldier working for Mantel Corporation, in a not so distant future. Governments don't have armies anymore and Mantel has stepped in, hired to maintain order around the world. The game takes place in a South American country, where ethnic cleansing is going on and where Mantel is trying to save the people from an evil dictator. Mantel soldiers not only have better and more powerful weapons they also have Nectar, a drug that makes them stronger, quicker and fearless. The first third of the game is all about Nectar. When you push L2 you get a shot of the drug which makes enemies shine, gives you more health and gives you an edge in most situations. Soon enough you see that Mantel is not so innocent and you will then turn on your fellow soldiers and join the rebels. You then lose Nectar but gain other abilities like the agility to dodge bullets or playing dead. You can also plant grenades on the floor, as traps or steal a Mantel's soldier's weapon by pressing R2 and then square. These are not bad abilities but the game takes Nectar away too soon and you miss it. Nectar is fun to use and some of the rebels attributes are somewhat useless. For example, you can steal weapons but expect to die most of the times you try it. Another problem with the game are the vehicles which are not very easy to control, sometimes being downright frustrating. The graphics are from average to bad. With Uncharted or CoD4 you really expect more and Haze is not even close to it. The gameplay is where the game shines. The guns are fun to use and the controls are tight. You can also customize all the controls, if you wish. Simply put, the game is fun. You also have online co-op with 3 other players which works flawlessly. Players come in or leave, seamlessly and everything works perfectly. It's really entertaining to play with other people by your side. There's also the usual Team Death Match and there's a mode called Team Assault where you play as the rebels or Mantel soldiers and where you have objectives to achieve such as preventing a Nectar field from being burned or Nectar crates in the caves, from being destroyed among others. The game is easy, even on harder difficulties and at about 7 hours, not very long. The AI also has problems and could have used more work but is not bad enough to break the game. The story is overly simplistic and underdeveloped but if you look closely, there's actually a message to it. The acting goes from acceptable to abysmal. Some fault also goes to some lines which are almost unbelievably bad. Haze is in its essence an average game. Its gameplay shines and nothing about it is really bad. A good online component and a fun and rewarding shooting mechanic make it a good bet for fans of the genre. Take is for what it is. It's an entertaining, flawed but very enjoyable experience. I loved it.
