5 out of 5 stars Should I Choose an Xbox 360 or PS3?   July 1, 2008
11 out of 13 found this review helpful

Everyone has their own views over which console is the best. You've got your Microsoft and Sony fanboys who are completely biased who drab on and on! yawn! Im fairly lucky (and possibly stupid) for having a 360, PS3 & Wii, meaning I can give my own impartial view to those not fortunate enough to own all three.

Xbox 360 is a great machine but has major reliability issues? My machine has been returned for repair twice. The internal fans are so loud its ridiculous. When it works, the choice of games are far superior to other systems at the moment but that should be the case as it has been out the longest. The core system is cheap but when you start adding on the extras? harddrive, wireless bridge, wireless controller, battery and charger and most of all having to pay for gold memberships to play online, you have to ask yourself if it really is cheap? Ok so you could buy the Elite unit for 250 which has the majority of the essential kit with it but you still need to buy the wireless bridge (if you are wireless)at 60 and pay 40 per year for a Gold Membership to play online which takes you over the price of a PS3. You dont even get a HDMI port on the normal units (you do on the Elite unit) for HDTV link up (you can however connect with component cables)! All in all the system is good with some fantastic exclusive games Bioshock (at the moment), Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3+4 and possibly Halo 3 at a push but it is not future proof and uses old tecnology with serious reliability issues. I could not in all honesty recommend this machine over a PS3.

The PS3 is also a great machine and is reliable, future proof and comes with pretty much everything included such as built in wifi, wireless controller with built in rechargable battery and free unlimited online play. Now the sore point for those 360 fanboys, bluray. Bluray is a fairly new media that allows developers to store large amounts of data on one disk without compression. This means that films have far superior picture and sound quality. However,it hasn't been used for games development until very recently. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a fantastic showpiece for how the future of gaming should look. Not only is the game incredibly immersive, the sound is unbelievably good with full dolby surround sound supported. The game is huge also, I clocked up an impressive 32 hours to complete the game. Having said that bioshock clocked up nearly 20 hours on an ordinary dvd disc. The PS3 is the better buy in my opinion, it runs almost silently rather than the 360's whirring and droning. Reliability is not an issue, it's fairly up-to-date technology wise, It comes with pretty much everything you need including free online gaming (although xbox live is slightly better but not worth forking out the extra 40 pounds per year, Microsoft you cheeky sods haven't we all paid enough). And dont forget PS3 has some pretty fantastic exclusive games Motorstorm, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet and so much more to come. Also, Sony continue to make significant improvements to the system with Firmware patches.

The more PS3 units sold, the better the gaming experience will be for everyone as more and more Games Developers will begin to take advantage of the huge storage capacity of the bluray discs to provide longer and more detailed games following in the footsteps of Konami in the recent MGS4.

Its all good whichever system you choose (until you get those dreaded red rings of death on the 360, I cant stress enough how annoying this is!! BE WARNED)

I would just like to mention that if you really want to see a masterclass of programming genius, you really want to check out Super Mario Galaxy on the Nintendo Wii. Those Nintendo boys know how to raise the benchmark in gaming. Oh and if you want an immersive First Person Shooter, forget your Call of Duty's, forget your Halo's, even forget the supurb bioshock, check out Retro Studios Metriod Prime 3 Corruption on the Nintendo Wii also!

5 out of 5 stars 'This Is Living' - WOW   December 28, 2007

Wow. What a console. The sheer sleekness and power of the console is simply jaw dropping. I have to admit, I was worried about the console, after the harsh reviews that many people have given it; But do not be put off by The Xbox360 teenage "Hardcore" Fans. They are just trying to ruin the PlayStation 3 as they think their console is better, even though most haven't even played a PS3, never mind owned one. I have put off purchasing a PS3 for a while now as the 60GB came with a hefty 350-400 Price tag and few games that I wanted to play were out. Now you can pick one up for just 269.99, Lets put that into perspective with the Xbox360 20GB Premium Package 229.99 + 54.99 Wireless Bridge and another 99.98 got the HD DVD player, That's a whopping 384.86, and With the PlayStation 3, you get Over double the storage (Minus the 7GB the Xbox360 Uses before you even Store your game data etc.)I'm not just going to sit here and go on and on about the PlayStation Vs Xbox war; as you have probably read too much about it and are sick and tired of hearing it. Here are something's you should no about the PS3 40GB vs. PS3 60GB.

1)PS2 Compatibility - If you want to play your PS2 Games, keep your PS2 Plugged in, You will more than likely not want to play it after buying the PS3, with many more release's coming soon, and enough games to do until then, you will be more than pleased.

2)20GB less storage - Most of my friends who own the Xbox360 haven't even used half of their storage, and considering the PlayStation 3 has more than double that, you will more than likely not need the extra 20GB, but as the PlayStation 4 might not be released until 2016, You can purchase a regular 2.5" Laptop drive 160GB-250Gb for under 100, although the 40GB will do for another 2 years at least. If you want to Store Music, Photos or Videos, Purchase one now as you'll use it up quickly, although for now my laptop does the job for me.

3)The memory card slots and only 2 USB ports - You can buy a stand for around 14.99 which will give you 3 USB ports, if you still want the Memory card slots, you can buy a 25 in One for pretty cheap now days, although you will more than likely not use them, keep in mine this is a GAMES console.

Blu-Ray is simply STUNNING, I have only watched Die Hard 4.0 on it, and was simply astonished. The image was perfect, although, you really do need a 40"+ HD TV to show it off, surround sound helps boost that Cinema-Like feeling. Many people are critical towards Sony about bringing this to the PlayStation and putting them into a Format war they do not want to be part of. Lets look at this from a gamers perspective, A Dual-Layer Blu-Ray Disk can store up to 50GB, Now its nearest competitor HD-DVD can store 30GB maxed out. And then there's DVD, which the 360 uses, it stores a mere 9GB, that's nearly 6 times less than Blu-Ray, and considering what Rock tar did with GTA San Andreas, The possibilities are endless. Although, if you are a 360 owner, you may need a HD-DVD player for future games, as the 9GB just will not do for future releases. Ok, now we come to the Online. Yes, the Xbox Live service is Leagues in advance, but is the 40 annual fee really worth it? The PlayStation in my eyes has everything you need to play people online, and although Sony do not need to add new Features, unlike Microsoft, who need to keep Those Xbox360 Fans glued to their service to Maximise profits, They are adding a Service called `Home' which should reach us soon, and I am looking forward to this. Last thing is The SIXAXIS controller, I love this little gadget, great controller and I can only assume how it will be accompanied with the Dual Shock 3 due to be released to Europe. Now with the games, the Xbox360 has loads of great games out now, but the PS3 is relatively `Future Proof' with many great releases, such as MGS4, GT 5 and HAZE exclusive to the PS3, not to mention GTA IV, with HD really coming into its stride, the PS3 in my eyes is by far the better choice. Other people are starting to see it too, over 8.5 Million PS3's have been sold, and the XBox360, 13.4Million, Not too far to go. People were worrying about its say in this console war, but everyone from now on will be purchasing this truly great masterpiece of technology by Sony from Now on. I think the Picture is great on my 26" Sony KDL26S3000 BRAVIA HDTV In my bedroom, but even just looking at the trailers on the 40" Sony Bravia in HMV I was just like WOW. Hope this Review has been helpful; any questions/Comments just post them here.

5 out of 5 stars PS3 = fun!   January 21, 2008

I've had my PS3 (60Gb) for some months now and have hardly put the controller down!

I got one of the last of the 60Gbs as I wanted to keep playing my PS2 games but I haven't bothered so far as I'm too busy loving Ratchett & Clank, Uncharted, LEGO Star Wars Complete Saga and Oblivion, as well as Motorstorm and Sega Rally.
Still think Sony should've left the PS2 compatibility in but that said, I haven't played on a console for so long in ages and maybe it's something they can resurrect with software only emulation?

The PS3 runs very quietly (much quieter than my old PS2!) and only spins the fan up when needed - mine's stored vertically next to the TV and I've had no overheating problems whatsoever. There's no need for those 3rd party bolt on fans unless you want to emulate a 360!
The user interface is dead easy to use (very PSP like) and connecting to the internet is a cinch.

The graphics to R&C and Uncharted really show what the PS3 can do - looking forward to the mad Little Big Planet this year too!

Upscaling of PS2 games and DVDs is brilliant and as Blu-ray seems to be winning the hi-def war then I'm sure I'll be getting some of those too!
Also, Bluray as a data format media gives the option to expand game levels/environments to an unparalleled degree.

All we need now is the new action RPG from Snowblind Studios (Baldur's Gate 3 anyone?) and you won't see me for months! =:o)

5 out of 5 stars Great value   October 8, 2007

There's a lot of value in this package.

30% decrease in price.
It gives you the 100% full PlayStation 3 game experience.
It gives you the 100% full PlayStation 1 game experience.
It gives you the 100% full Blu-ray video experience.
+ Wifi, Gigabit Ethernet, HDD, Bluetooth, DVD 1080p upscaling, HDMI 1.3..etc.

The biggest removal though is PS2 backwards compatibility. The reason for this is that they would have to remove the GS chip which is a PS2 component so they would be able to reduce the price. PS1 support is still in though (the reason for this being that PS1 games are fully software emulated unlike complex PS2 games). One might hope they add PS2 software emulation later one day but there's no banking on this.

They have also removed the memory card slots (don't worry, games will be saved on the HDD, you can also add memory card support with an external adapter), SACD support is gone and they have reduced the USB ports to two (which you can extend with a USB hub).

It's a bit sad PS2 support is gone but all in all this package is dripping with technology for the asked price. There are some really good games this fall like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, SingStar, PES2008 and Ratchet&Clank but the lineup in 2008 is absolutely unmatched (games like Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5, MGS4, Buzz! Quiz TV..etc not to mention Home). Happy gaming.

5 out of 5 stars Whinge, whinge, whinge   December 31, 2007

Ok, i'm going to have a whinge about something that a lot of prople (including myself) on this review page are guilty of. Too many people are leaving stupid reviews on this on this site which aren't objective and are slagging off the console simply because there seems to be a virtual war between XBox and PS3 at the moment which seems rather rediculous. People looking at reviews on this site deciding which console to buy aren't going to find it helpful if people called "MR XBox" or "Johnny PS3" are leaving reviews slagging the other one off when they are clearly doing it to gain one up on each other. I myself have left such a review in a fit of rage and have since deleted it as it was completely unfounded. If you want to buy a console, check people's review history and make up you're mind if you think their reviews are objective or just petty. I myself own a PS3 and am very happy with it. I have had no problems with it and although there aren't that many "must have" games out for it at the moment, i reckon 2008 will be a good year for the PS3. What with MGS4, GT5 and GTA4 all coming out plus other titles. And yes, the PS3 doesn't have that many exclusive titles yet but give it time. I don't see what the problem with having games on both consoles is anyway, that means more people can enjoy them.

Happy Gaming!
