5 out of 5 stars Recommended 5*****   April 21, 2008

Took the plunge and upgraded from our PS2 to the PS3 - WOW!!! The picture quality is an immense change. I'm running it on a 5 year old 42" Samsung Plasma via Component leads at 576p and it's amazing.

I'm not worried about the lack of PS2 compatibility as personally we never once played a PS1 game on our PS2, and anyway, the PS2's been relegated to our daughters room.

The games are excellent, but what's really impressed me is its Media Centre abilities. I've got it connected into our home Network via wireless, and it quite happily streams Music, Pictures and Video from our desktop PC in the bedroom (XP with Media Player 11 acting as a server).

Me, my wife and our 5 year old daughter have all got our own log in profiles, so if we're all playing the same game it saves your progress independently of each other. Very handy, as with the PS2 our daughter would frequently overwrite one of our games.

The bluetooth controller is excellent, I can have the PS3 playing music in the front room and change the tracks from the kitchen.

Thoroughly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfull versatile machine   April 26, 2008

My High. Def. videos has got new life. This machine is DivX;-) certified and it plays H.264 mp4, XVID and more videoformats. Everything in High definition!!! It even plays high def from external hard drive through one of its two USB ports. I have played 25 megabit/sek. High Def film seamlessly through the USB-port. And if one likes a film from the external drive;- one push of a button and it is taken into the internal harddrive on the PS3!
This is awesome as all my High Def home videos are in the machine. There they can be wieved with animated icons which can grow as you swipe through them, so you can easily get a global wiev over them-awesome!

All Your DVD's will be upscaled beautifully to High. Def. quality. re-experience Your entire DVD-collection as digitally remastered!

Blu-Ray! The very best player. WiFi- it connected instantly to my little Airport Express which was on another floor!

It has updated 2 times from the internet!

Supercomputer! 7 cell-processors deliveres a speed of 4 GigaHertz!(How fast is Your PC?;-))

With a press of a button You take part in global science, when You connect to an array of online PS3's and a University researching gene folding!

Bluetooth controle with movement sensor. Blutooth turnes the PS3 on and of in a jiffy even with Your back turned! You don't have to point anyware with a bluetooth controller! Every TV should have one, I think. Instead of the infrared pointers.

And the PS3 games......High Definition full speed!-Split screen with two drivers.(buy an extra controller) And a big bunch of downloadable demo games with a hole lot to play-for free! Who needs obsolete PS2 game ability? Not me!

But what about the only 40 Gig? Well it can hold a lot, but an ordinary function supported by the manual is changing the harddrive. A 2 1/2" SATA harddrive can be fitted from the exterior within 5 minutes! One screw, and it comes out with a handle to grasp!

The menu inside the players beautifull color changing operating system asks:"Do You want to install another operating system?"-One push and it will divide the HD into another partition were You can install Linux for an instance. And You will get boot options as well.

I went to a special store for games. They had 2 plasma TV's like mine with XBOX 360 live games on them. The PS3's graphic is much, much better in my opinion. There is no comparison none what so ever.

Well it is the first month of me having it. It can hold my music and my pictures, but I have not gotten to it yet.

The only thing I would say is just buy it. You can make a million uses of it!

5 out of 5 stars For me, it totally lived up to all expectations   April 19, 2008

I've had a PS2 for ages and i think a lot of people will agree it was an amazing console with some of the best games ever made on it - Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto... the list goes on and on. But having got an HD TV recently and the prospect to sequels to all these great games coming out soon, i got a PS3.

I have to admit, i was initially put off by the high price tag and limited library of games and dissapointed that the console was not backwards compatible. However, with the price now reduced and the games library much improved and having actually got the console and used it for a while, all my fears were remedied.

Here's some reasons why the Playstation 3 is so great. For starters, as many other reviewers have said, the lack of backwards compatibility is ultimately not that important - if you still want to play PS2 games you will have kept your PS2 and with the ever imporving PS3 games library you'll find your spending too much time playing on them to even think about PS2 stuff. My console came bundled with Motorstorm and Resistance, too great games and of course, who could not mention the simple awesome Call Of Duty? Just like the PS3 itself, i had heard so many high things about this game and i was not dissapointed when i got it.

The Blu-Ray player - while you may not have any Blu-Ray discs at the moment, just wait a few years. HD-DVD has lost the format war and all us Playstation fans can now scoff at XBox owners. Brilliant! One of the other main draws of the console for me was the graphics - on a good HD TV they really are photorealistic, the first time you load something up you will be totally amazed - they're simply stunning and create a lush, involving environment to play in.

I also love the new browser system which serves as a hub for all your usage of the console, it's slickly designed and contains links to all your downloaded games, videos and internet. Did i say about the internet? It may sound simple but there's something incredibly cool about being able to use the internet on the console - it really does show just how universal its use is.

DVD's work brilliantly on here too, as well as looking great on an HD TV, the PS3's menu system is easy to use and there's also the nifty little feature where if you take the disc out and then put it back in again at a later date it will still be at the same place.

And what about the technical side? I do have a few little bones to pick but they're really only very small things. One, the 40 GB seems a little small. If you download demos from the Playstation store or the demo disc you get with the Official Playstation Magazine (which is brilliant by the way - definitely recommended too) then this space will go fast, especially if you start saving lots of videos on your console too. Also, certain aspects of the console seem a little delicate such as the 5 second transition as it switches between HD resolutions or the touch sensitive button which must be held for 5 seconds to turn the console off. They're only minor points and you get used to them quickly but for first time users these things might seem a little unfamiliar for those used to the more simple robustness of the PS2.

There's a whole host of good things though, to start with, the design of the console is fantastic and its really good that it now comes with a stand so you can have it horizontal. Touch sensitive buttons and the replacement of the sliding out disc tray bring this console vang up to date and you can't tell how thankful i am that the controllers are still the same only with the added bonus of wireless. And they're dead simple to recharge too, simply hook 'em up with the USB cable and the need for loads of batteries is eliminated.

So, summing up, the Playstation 3 is totally value for money. Great games which function equally well on single player or online, simply stunning graphics and an overall great design and user interface - the Playstation 3 looks set to become just as massively popular and long-lasting as the PS2. Definitely recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Offer!   October 17, 2007

I own the 60GB PS3 and I have to say this new 40GB is amazing value for money. Think about exactly what you're getting with this console, a blu-ray player, excellent quality hardware (the best out there) and the power of the PS3 to take next generation gaming to another level. For 299 you cannot miss out on this console and now the PS3 is affordable to most people.

You can go online with your 40GB PS3 and connect to the Playstation Network which is completely FREE. Create your online ID and enjoy free online gaming and access to the Playstation Store where you can download free demos, videos, blu-ray trailers, game trailers, game add-ons and there's also full games which you can pay for. This can all be done from your PS3 controller and via your TV.

If you haven't played PS3 games before then you're in for a treat. You really have never seen anything like next generation gaming on this powerful console and this is only the beginning. Sony have a fantastic line-up of new and exclusive games coming only to the PS3 from now through till this time next year. Certain games such as Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm take advantage of the power of the PS3 and create some of the best graphics and AI you will see in video games, such as thousands of enemies being able to be on-screen all at the same time each running their own AI and advanced physics making everything all so real.

This 40GB doesn't include backwards compatibility, which simply means you cannot play your PS2 games on it. This was featured in the 60GB model but for 100 less this is the only real difference, there's also a couple of USB ports missing but this is not usually a problem as most people don't use four at the same time anyway and your wireless controller charges via one of them but only for a couple of hours but this PS3 works just the same as the 60GB making it a real bargain.

You cannot miss out on the PS3 now, you will not be dissapointed. Buy this console and also consider getting titles such as Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Folklore and Genji to name a few. Then by Christmas there will be Haze, Uncharted Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Clank and more all in their stunning next-gen glory. In 2008 there are some HUGE games coming which will turn the PS3's free online gaming network into the place to be. These include the virtual world Home, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, Grand Theft Auto 4, Motorstorm 2 and many many more!

I hope you liked the review, do enjoy the console and hopefully I'll see you online soon and who knows we may end up racing each other on Motorstorm one day ;)

5 out of 5 stars Fine first impressions   December 24, 2007

This is the third generation of Sony Playstation I've owned and it contains a generous helping of new technology from the Blu-ray DVD player to the wi-fi connection for the console and the Bluetooth connection for the six axis game controller, which has motion sensors but no rumble feedback.

First impressions are very good - the curves of the new console are certainly striking, with a shiny piano black finish. It has HDMI and optical outputs on the rear with two USB sockets on the front. The console is surprisingly cool and quiet in operation. Linking to the wireless network took about five minutes with an initial system upgrade to 2.1 taking another ten minutes. Graphics are very smooth and full of background detail. It is a very impressive machine and should be futureproof for the next few years with its full 1080p HD output and 5.1 surround sound. Now it just needs some new games in 2008 to make it a must have machine like its predecessors.
