5 out of 5 stars A review by a Xbox 360 owner (who is fed up with fan noise).   January 19, 2008

This is what I emailed to a friend of mine who also has a 360...I think this sums things up nicely.

Very impressed with it thus far. The PS3 is so quiet in fact, that you cannot hear it at all, even watching Blu Ray movies. The loudest noise it makes is the modest 'beep' it makes when you switch the darn thing on. No exaggeration. The thunderous noise that emanates from the xbox 360 in HD DVD mode, is simply laughable. As a result of this slightly embarrassing revelation, sadly, it is highly unlikely that I will ever watch an HD movie via the 360. Having to compete with excessive fan noise arguably ruins a good movie. It's totally unacceptable to have to turn up the volume and try and ignore the racket in the corner of my room and I have to ponder on how or why did microsoft manage to make the 360 so rowdy. Different technology needs different cooling requirements, and clearly MS appear to have overlooked this minor yet important detail.

I've downloaded the demo for Unchartered: Drakes Fortune and by crikey, the graphics really are up there with the most powerful of PC's. It even makes Far Cry look pants. The jungle detail is simply AMAZING. Not to say that the graphic's on the 360 aren't good...but I'm yet to see anything on the 360 thats THIS good. Even the 360 controller is suddenly looking slightly cumbersome with its great big battery pack going on. The sixaxis controller seems nice, light and adds another element to a game, the same way vibration does....so when the new version comes out with rumble technology the gap between the two consol's will widen further.

So to summarise, if it wasn't for the fact that there are still a better range of games available for the 360, I would have it on eBay today. Roger and out.

For me the ps3 provides the ultimate 'future proof' high def experience, not just for games but for all multimedia entertainment. There have been some criticisms in comparison to microsoft's xbox, but you must remember that they have been developing games for their system over a year longer, developers are only now truly realising the potential of the development tool and cell processor of the ps3. If you think back to ps2 and ps1 they both had slow starts with poor release games, but look at what followed, games that were groundbreaking and pushed the boundaries of what consumers and the industry thought possible.
So in terms of games, invest now and the rewards will show themselves over the course of 2008/2009 (many developers are now saying they will have to port 'inferior versions' of future titles to the xbox due to its constraints).
In terms of video, you have a next generation blu-ray player built in and ready to go, no extra add on to complicate your system. Blu ray has now been backed by 6 of the 8 major hollywood studios, with the other 2 set to review their position over the coming months. Analysts have already predicted the death of hd-dvd, so again I emphasize the future proof design of this system. You'll find microsoft backed hd-dvd as a competitor of sony rather than in the interests of the consumer, but they are now admitting they were wrong to do so. Also as a little bonus blu ray discs are extremely scratch resistant so because games and films are produced on them as standard their longetivety is far greater than the inferior dvd format.
An amazing feature of the ps3 I have recently been using is the ability to 'wirelessly' transfer media files (video, music, photos) from my laptop over my home network using the media server function on windows media player. This now means the ps3 is truly the hub of my home entertainment system.
To summarise, you're getting a 300 supercomputer that will do all of the above and so much more. Xbox may have more games titles out now, but as stated developers have had much longer to become accustomed to tbe xbox development tool. If you're a consumer interested in the now rather than the next, that may be the right system for you. However if you want a truly amazing next gen system that will futureproof your investment over the next 8-10 years (with no circle of death every time the jet engines fail!) then this can be the only real choice.

5 out of 5 stars Why the haters?   January 21, 2008

I have to admit I was very tentative about joining the next gen console race and took a fair while before deciding to stick with Sony and buy a PS3. Don't get me wrong, I've played a fair bit on the Wii (only at parties) and the Xbox has done nothing but impress me.
However, Ive done a lot of reading on the net about this console and I just really think it has much more potential than the others.
Plus points, it has a built-in hard drive, built in wi-fi. My mate has a 360 and has had to pay an EXTRA 200 quid just to get online and get a hard drive. Thats even before he gets a HD player. This one is built in.
The Playstation store is growing all the time but its still a bit on the small side.
I think the important thing though is that, despite the negative press over the last 12 months, the PS3 is getting better all the time - just do a search for the announcements from the recent CES show.
Admittedly, I am quite jealous, at present, about such an impressive Xbox catalogue and its superior online gaming function, but having said that Ive had a good blast on Team Fortress and Resistance online. its getting better and the software line-up this year looks amazing.
Ignore all these lame "my console is great yours is rubbish" comments - you know that each one has its own benefits, heck I wish I could afford to own all three.
The PS3 is an impressive piece of kit and I fall more in love with it each day. It will get much much better and Ive already been wowed with Uncharted, Orange Box (urm, I havent noticed any frame rate probs), Skate.
Looking forward to more PS3 exclusives and when Play TV (a freeview box and recorder which will beam programmes to your PSP) comes out this will
be the icing on the cake.
Oh, Im still a bit unsure about the PS2 backwards compatibility but to be fair since buying this, I havent even thought about my PS2 games. The new games have kept my busy enough.

As a multimedia hub, DVD/Blu-Ray player and games console all in one, the PS3 cannot be beaten.

I have my PS3 connected to a 40" 1080p Widescreen TV and movies and games look absolutely fantastic.

It is one of the cheapest Blu-ray players in the market, and arguably one of the best too. If you are a fan of movies, you should really do yourself a favour and have a look.

As far as games are concerned, it could be argued that the XBox 360 has the edge on the PS3, but really this is only temporary due to the late release of the PS3. The XBox 360 peaked last year, and shelf space in high street stores is already starting to move away from the 360 and towards the PS3. With some great titles on their way, the PS3 will soon be the games console of choice for the "serious" gamer.

Also, with the recent price drop and the victory of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, there really is no excuse not to buy one now.

Hello reader! This review is not a review of the console alone but rather the ideal one for you. For those who are deciding whether to get a Playstation or a Xbox for Xmas this year. I shall be totally honest here and I am sure many would agree: Playstation's newest console is by far the better console in terms of ability and in the way it has been built with very few problems and a quiet fan in comparison to the 360. So basically the plasytation itself is a much better machine. online however, the 360 is much smoother and much more organised for chatting perposes. this is a major positive for microsoft. Another positive is the range in games in comparison to the playstation's but then you could argue the 360 has been round much longer. being an unbiased rater, I feel that whichever console you choose to buy you will be satisfied in different ways. Depending on your gaming interests, I would say that Playstation has a positive future its just got off to a slow start but with the likes of the best game ever on the way (metal gear solid) and various other exclusives, Gran Turismo, killzone and Haze there is much to come. Then again Xbox is always getting fabulous titles like Fable, Gears of war, Mass effect and so on. So in the end my view is balanced and being owner of both consoles I have a pretty strong view. However overall if i was to choose a console I'd choose for the remainder of the next generation of gaming I think i'd probably choose xbox360 for the sole reason that there are far more games for my liking and many online advantages. But, the negative for the 360 is the danger of the console itself going wrong (the red ring of death). so its a risky console which is why I love the PS3's machine so much more. I hope I have reviewed this fairly and helped those of you that are unsure of the ideal console...of course though tehre is the Wii, if you can get hold of one but I will say that the Wii is only good fun at first ( a novelty) unless you buy it for family perposes. It is not made for a single person...it must be a family machine. thanks and have a great Xmas people.
