Excellent bit of kit! February 5, 2008 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I own a 40GB one of these. It is extraordinary! Really good game play excellent graphics and HDMI connection for LCD or Plasma TVs! It delivers 1080p/24 movie playback from Blu Ray discs and offers excellent upscaling from regular DVDs. The inbuilt wireless networking, Bluetooth controller and Picture and Music features really places this device as a home entertainment centre rather than a games console.
A DVD remote control is vital for use as a DVD or Blu-Ray player as the supplied controller is tricky to use for film viewing.
Any regular 2.5" SATA Hard Disc Drive can be easily installed to improve the storage capabilities of the machine. I filled my original 40GB drive in about 2 weeks with MP3s, photos and free game downloads from Playstation Network. I changed my Hard Drive to a 160GB. All that is needed is a small cross head screwdriver and this operation does not invalidate your warranty!
Overall, a superb basis for a complete home entertainment system.
Great Console March 2, 2008 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
After being a Playstation fan for many years i was disappointed when i first saw the price tag on the PS3 as i knew that i would have to wait to get my hands on one. So to bide my time until i could afford one i bought the Nintendo Wii and I was and still am extremely happy with the console but after playing it for a year I found that I felt I was missing out on some awesome games that were coming out on the 360 and PS3. In the end i finally bit the bullet and bought the 40GB PS3 and i have not regretted it for a second. First off the graphics are amazing and obviously so are the games. Secondly as a multi-media playing console it is also amazing I upgraded my harddrive to 120GB for only 40 self fitted (Really easy to do for any user). I've now got all my music stored on the PS3 and stream all my videos to it over my network. I would say if anyone is unsure what to go for in terms of the 3 consoles in my opinion there is not a clear winner between any of them. If you want something very different, more family based and you are on a budget definatly go for the wii (also if you have small children who will play as well). The choice between 360 and PS3 is a difficult one as well obviously i chose the PS3 and here are my reasons why: Firstly the game catalogue and although at the moment is smaller than the 360s and nearly all the games come out on both there are a few that drew me to the PS3 such as Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII all which are exclusive to the PS3. Secondly the PS3 has Blu-Ray which has now won the format war. Thirdly everything is built in you don't have to buy an extra wireless adaptor, you don't have to pay for your online gaming its FREE and you don't have to pay for your Blu-ray. Fourthly I see more of a future for the PS3 its more powerful, it uses discs with more storage therefore is capable of bigger better games, the internal hard drive is fully upgradable and the firmware is being constantly being upgraded. Well I hope this may help a few of you who don't know what to buy!
So what if it looks like a sandwich toaster?? January 15, 2008 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
After deliberating long and hard as to whether i should go for the xbox360 or PS3, I finaly made up my mind and went for the latter for a number of reasons. Firstly, after reading reviews on Amazon, I was slightly concerned at the number of people commenting on how their 360's had given them problems with overheating, the "Ring Of Death" etc, and they had to get numourous replacement machines. (although, I have heard these faults have now been fixed with the lastest machines). Secondly, I'd seen preview clips of Gran Turismo 5 and I didnt want to miss out on that, and lastly, I discovered Sony had released a cheaper 40gb version of the PS3.
So whats it like? Well, firstly let me just talk about one of the things that I was concerned about when i was deciding whether to buy or not. If you have a standard TV, The games DO NOT look terrible as some people have said, its still amazing HiDef or not, and the graphics are so much better than the PS2, the difference is staggering. The day I got it i was playing the NBA 08 demo on a standard telly, my dad thought i was watching a real life game on Sky Sports. I have since got a HD tv, and i will say that it is worth getting one if you can, but its not the end of world if you dont.
Game-wise, yes, their are more 360 games around at the moment, but its still early days for PS3. And even if you just got it for Motorstorm it would be worth it.
The machine itself is really quiet and the initial set up is no harder than it is with a PS2. Setting up the Wifi internet is just a two minute job. Although I will say, it does attract quite alot of dust to it, I think maybe its because its shiny or somthing, but thats more of a minor annoyance than a major problem.
Overall then, i would highly recommend it. so buy it. (oh, make sure you get a pack of dusters while ur at it.)
A stunning console and much more October 8, 2007 12 out of 18 found this review helpful
The PS3 is an amazing piece of kit, not just in terms of build quality but also the features it offers. Most important it is an excellent games console and the amount of titles is rising very nicely, both at full price and online. Stand out games thus far include Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Virtua Fighter 5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Rainbow 6: Vegas, Super Stardust HD and many more. Hotly anticipated titles due soon include Ratchet & Clank, Singstar, Little Big Planet, Assassin's Creed and of course annual favourites such as FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer.
One caveat is that the 40Gb model does not support Playstation 2 games. If you have PS2 games you may wish to consider the 60Gb model, or hang onto your PS2 for some time.
The PS3 is also an amazing multi-media centre, being able to play Blu-ray high-definition discs, DVDs, CDs, Super Audio CDs plus file formats such as MP3, AAC, WMA, H264, JPG and PNG. You can even play music and movies off the hard disk making it a convenient juke box. The PS3 can rip music from a CD and you can use PC software such as Nero to convert DVDs to the H264 format. The PS3 also supports DNLA which allows you to stream movies from your PC if you want. To go with the blu-ray support, the PS3 also offers an HDMI1.3 output which allows you to play your content on HD sets up to 1080p resolution with support for deep colours. Sony have also announced that a personal video recorder (PVR) device will be sold next year that allows the PS3 to record and watch digital TV.
One other gripe is that the PS3 does not include an HDMI cable. Many people are suckered into buying expensive HDMI cables because one is missing from the box. It should be there, or Sony should sell one cheaply. If you do buy a cable, make sure you pay no more than 15 for it. HDMI is digital and expensive cables do not improve the quality in any way.
The hardware deserves some special attention. You may have heard of the 360's woe's with noisy drives, scratched disks and the dreaded "red ring of death". The PS3 has excellent reliability and has not suffered any widespread similar issues. Not only is the build quality excellent, but the unit is very quiet in use. The PS3 also comes with wifi and gigabit ethernet making it excellent at networking straight from the box. The console uses bluetooth for its controllers which also means you can use 3rd party bluetooth headsets, mice and keyboards with the PS3. The 40Gb model has 2 USB ports that also allow you to charge the controllers, or plug-in peripherals such as mice, keyboards, card readers, external drives, cameras, hubs etc.
Finally, the hard disk is replaceable and uses the industry standard 2.5 inch SATA format. So if you find yourself running short of space, you can replace your drive by opening a hatch and undoing a few screws. A 160Gb SATA drive costs 60 which is less than half what the XBox 360's 120Gb drive would cost you.
One bonus for gamers is that online gaming is FREE. You do not have to pay a subscription to play against other players around the world. This is in stark contrast to the 360 which charges an annual subscription for a similar service. Sony also intend to roll out Home soon which is an advanced virtual world that allows you to meet up with other gamers, watch trailers and talk with people online.
In all the PS3 is great system and excellent value. The price is better than the 360 when you consider that online gaming is free, and that the PS3 has wifi, supports 3rd party peripherals and has a blu-ray player built-in.
Playstation 3 40gig January 25, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Everyone knows by now that the 60gb has been discontinued and so we are left with the 40gb. Some people are put off from buying the 40gig for a number of reasons: Less storage space, less USB ports, no memory card readers etc. Even after all this the 40gb PS3 is a worthy buy, it now has a good line-up of games and has some brilliant ones coming out in the future. Also if you really need the extra space you can add it yourself. So the PS3 40GB in my opinion is a great purchase especially with what it can do and what it will be able to do, so don't be put off from buying.
