Overhyped, Unless..... June 2, 2008 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
Let me run through the major ups and downs with this game; starting with the downs...
- If your pc is not the absolute *absolute* best end pc, you will not be able to run this game on the lowest settings. I cannot stress that enough. Really. I have never, ever had a problem running a game on maximum quality, the very highest graphics settings. I can only just run this game on low.
- A funny comment that I seem to hear from a lot of people is "Hooray! Finally, an MMO which doesn't consist of button mashing" May I point out - if you play a melee class in this game - you will probably need to replace the 1,2,3 keys on your keyboard on a weekly basis. I dont think I know of a game where you mash the same three keys so much.
- You can kill any player To me, this initially sounded like a really nice idea, me being a pvper and all. But after I've witnessed it, I realise what a horrible horrible mess it is. The fact that a player who is 50 levels above you can come and kill you and get kill points for it is ridiculous - so much so I'm assuming it's a bug which they'll hopefully fix at some point.
You could argue "why did you roll on a pvp server" at this next point, but after a day of it, you wouldn't be saying that. Imagine you have a quest to kill a certain mob, lets call him "Barry". and lets say at any given time there are 3 - 6 other people going to kill barry as well. Everyone tries to kill eachother and ultimately - to level you have to be the best pvper. If you're really unlucky there'll be a level 70 or 80 camping Barry for some easy pvp kills. Now imagine trying to level like that - about 10 quests per level at the start, slowly increasing
And on the topic of pvp - there is no skill to this game. gear means little - PVP is purely a battle of whose pc runs the best
And the good points?
- The combat system. I know, I know, I just told you it was a buttonmash-fest, and it is. But I'll give it this - it does stop you from falling asleep mid battle. Not because it's not boring (I assure you, it is) but because you need to concentrate somewhat.
- *IF* your pc can handle the maximum quality graphics, they are outstanding.
- (This point is only a plus because it deals with the terrible pvp system, however if the pvp didn't suck, this would be in the "bad points") A big chunk of the game is single player. Hooray, you don't have to die a billion times to get your quests done! Although this kinda defeats the point of an MMO, and I *think* the single player part of the game is mandatory.
So overall 3/2 stars out of 5. There are a lot of mixed opinions with this game. To be perfectly honest though, it seems like the only people who would enjoy it are those that have 3,000 brand new PCs and enjoy an easy mashing of keys.
The Great Funcom Swindle July 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As stated by others, the first 20 levels are rich and beautiful and show a great deal of promise. After level 20 you will start to struggle to find enough content to reach each new tier. The game has basically left me feeling ripped off, Funcom have the money and are off doing there next project rather than enriching such a promising title.
be very careful July 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i bought this game after reading many previews in the press and thought id give it a whirl, after playing wow and guild wars, i wish i hadnt bothered, to let you know my system is as follows Q6600 o/c to 2.78ghz 4 gig ram, and two 8800GTX in sli, and well its jerky!!!!! the most frustaing thing is the game seems to crash every 15-20 mins of playtime, meaning a complete reboot and lost playing time. i have downloaded all the huge patches but still seems one of the buggiest games in recent memory, whats also really annoying is that you cannot even play in DX10, untl yet a further patch is released in the autumn,
its a jerky buggy stuttering mess of a game that should not have been released in this stateGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
buy with caution
now come on guys September 9, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
this game is only good because of the combo's. everyone knows this, yet people try to say because its the graphics, as they have a poor computer, or its because the game play is innovative, ie they suck at MMo's. The reason this sells is because it is adult (ie boobies) as they tried to do something different from the everquest 2 formula (which WoW followed). If you want a good MMo, ie something that will last beyond the 30 days free ( I'm 38 on AoC on my 3rd day, max lvl 80 by the way) then try everquest two (not vangaurd...), If you want something popular but easy try WoW ( i got to 67 within 5 weekslus several alts) if you want something different then try Tabula rasa. It is different but has a bad rep. tried it since beta, and it is good, if short lived.
If you don't follow into these categories wait for Warhammer: age of reckoning (sorry bad at spelling). It is good and should atleast be tried. In depth game with many new characteristics. Try to avoid this game if your a serial gamer, you will be disappointed. The combos are simple 1-2-3 combo's (the first strret fighter is harder) combined with the abiltiy to see (baddies have shields on left (1), right (3) or center (2)). Easy and am bored of it after 5 days....
Cheers all Tyler

I really wanted to like this game, hence my playing it for 2 months and reaching level 75, but having spent most of that time waiting for the developer to fix the problems, (which they promised to do, but utterly failed to deliver on), I finally gave up in disgust. The vast majority of media reviews are based on the first 20 levels, and should not be trusted, as those levels were over-designed to produce positive media reviews. The problems kick in beyond level 20, and there are three main problem areas:
1. The game was still in a beta stage when it was released, and contained game breaking issues of a technical nature for many players, (regular crash to desk top, regular lag spikes, regular memory leak, etc). Subsequent patches did not address or fix these crucial problems. The developer are however aware of these technical problems, and promise to look at them.
2. Numerous quests were broken, the crafting side was broken, the PVP combat was broken and/or unbalanced, etc. Subsequent patches did fix most of the broken quests, but the crafting side remained a joke, as did the PVP combat, despite a huge number of patches aimed at balancing the different classes.
3. There is a huge lack of content between levels 60 - 80, and nothing to do when you reach level 80, as the end game itself, (siege wars, raiding, etc), are all broken or pointless. The developer promised to add new high level content within a month and fix the broken bits, but by the time I left, they had not done so, and were a month overdue.
So, basically the game was still in a beta stage when I gave up on it, despite the fact that it was two months after launch. Hardcore fans of the MMORPG genre argue that this type of game needs oceans of time to evolve, and that we should expect huge problems at the birth of any new game. Perhaps, but I don't think any game should be released onto the market in a beta state, and would strongly recommend anyone delay buying this game for at least 3 - 6 months, and even then, they should check forums and web sites to see if the developer has finally delivered a working game.
