GTA 4 Review July 15, 2008 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
The good........
The graphics of GTA4 are simply outstanding, especially in high def. This is best illustrated when flying in a helicopter or viewing the city as a passenger in a taxi cab. On the subject of taxi cabs, their enhanced capability's make for much better gameplay. In such a complex city of narrower and more congested roads, driving across liberty city can be a time consuming task. Taxis allow one to either get in and allow the driver to take care of the road, or even better get in to the cab and then select skip journey. From a to b in the tap of a button. The new shooting options are excellent. Drive by's now require a bit more skill as you need to manually aim. On the up side, you can now shoot at a much greater range of targets in front, behind, on either side, high, low. Also the new blind fire, and shoot behind cover techniques make for much more exciting and skillful battle. The tossing of grenades to lure people away from cover is particularly clever. The auto save. How many times have you just completed a hard mission on GTA SA, only to get attacked on the way back to your safe house by a rival gang, get killed and lose a wonderful and expensive hoard of weapons. Now your game just auto saves after every mission. Friends / girlfriends - The special skills of friends is very useful, particularly little Jacob who sells you cut price guns near your location (he could park closer though). The car damage / explosions. The car eventually catches fire and you can watch as it slowly gets engulfed in flames and explodes. Even better is to sit on the highway, wait for the car to ignite before speeding off and watching the action in slow mo. Fantastic. The railway system, its brilliant with interchange stations, and different lines. It might not be the quickest way to get around, but its scenic and just fun to do. The decision making processes. Being able to choose your final ending to the game is genius. I have chosen the Deal ending, and the story has been absolutely pulsating. Having the finale over 3 missions also makes sense. The revamped police vigilante missions are brilliant, and there is not the annoying 12 consecutive mission constraint like in previous games. Now one can attend to normal crimes, or carry out special assassinations on criminals on the 'most wanted' list. One can even call for (not always helpful) backup. Random characters provide a humorous and refreshing break from the main story, brilliant. New online multi player mode is brilliant, allowing fierce battles with friends to take place within the grounds of the alderney prison. Or perhaps a race across the streets of broker? The choice is vast.
The not so good.....
Sometimes the game gives you a bit too much help, like telling you the locations of Brucie's cars he asks for via e-mail, directing you to most wanted characters etc. The traditionalist in me would rather the player has to find the car (or check it up in a guide). No aeroplanes, I guess that as it is just one city, and not the vast state of SA it makes sense. However aeroplanes were great fun, and always a welcome addition to any GTA game. Sometimes the missions do not always feel like they fit into the overall plot. Niko does many missions just for money which are not directly related to the plot. Whereas characters like CJ or Tommi V seemed to often be working towards a goal in addition to the money. Statistically I believe there are less missions than in SA, and the size of the city is slightly smaller. Critics of SA argue that there was too much dead space like the deserts, however I think that sense of openness and size of area to explore was part of the brilliance of SA. Player cannot buy safe houses or property. Once the safe house in Broker is closed, there are no safe houses on the entire island. The property and entrepreneurship of previous GTA games was a fun extra.
Conclusion......
An absolutely awesome and outstanding game that will be noted as one of the most successful and advanced games. It really has set a new level in open world gameplay. It is a game that is brilliant for the occasional gamer or the hard core GTA master alike.

Amazing piece of work and a contender for the Game of the Year! May 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The game is superb, i managed to get a go on my friends PS3. Highly recommended but by all means DO NOT buy this game off Clearance-Games here on Amazon. I have been waiting since Tuesday on release of the game and still have not recieved it! I dont think they understood the meaning of the word Pre-Order im so desperate to play properly :(.
GTA4 is the game GTA3 wants to be. January 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm annoyed. Since May I've been playing this game. It's set in a huge, massively detailed city, full of characters, full of life. In the middle of the story is the most rounded and real character in video game history. A story that would put some Hollywood movies to shame. In gameplay terms there's nothing wrong with it, the targeting is tight and the driving is perfectly balanced. For a game of it's scale, the graphics are stunning, there is no pop up and the framerate is solid through out...even in the superb online mode. Sounds great, what is this game...this game is Grand Theft Auto 4.
I'm annoyed because everyone except the people who've bought it, think it's a masterpiece. All I'm hearing is "You can't do what you can do in San Andreas!" or "After the story, there's nothing to do!". These are the same people who said 4 years ago "There's too much rubbish, in San Andreas". I ask you, how many of you have completed this game (or any of the others) 100%? Because I haven't and nor have most of the people who've bought it. There are a huge percentage of 360 owners slating this game, for not having anything to do, so you won't be buying the DLC then? This game is huge, even without the online. Here's some news for people...San Andreas was (in many respects) an awful game, awful story, awful graphics, awful targeting and some awful moments of farce. But your nostalgia remembers this massive game where you flew around on jet packs and "Isn't it great to get lost in the million square miles of nothing?!". Getting fat is not what I want in a game. The other thing I hear is "It's not as good as GTA3". So what in GTA3 can you do, that you can't do in GTA4? Is there "Most Wanted" or "Assassination" missions in GTA3? Can you fly, ride bikes, target, swim, can you see a car that's 100 yards up the road, can you watch a cop chase some random bloke down the street, can you turn a car over without it exploding, do the cars slowly burn from the engine block to the rims and then explode, making random people run around on fire, does it have the Euphoria Engine which makes every animation unique, is there auto save, can you play against 15 other players across the whole of Liberty City??? NO!!! Other than "Rampages" I'm struggling to find one thing that GTA3 has over GTA4...?
GTA4 is the game GTA3 wants to be.
Those who say that the game has nothing extra and it's not Next Gen, think of this. GTA2 had gangs and GTA3, a next gen game, did not. This is because when the next generation of console is released you get alot more video game newbies. So a video game series like GTA (that runs across generations) needs to be more of an introduction at the start of a new generation. So you can't be adding loads of stuff that could alienate and new fan base.
And as for it not being Next Gen...16 players fighting it out over the whole of Liberty City, that's just the very definition of Next Gen.
Next gen as it should be. September 22, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I really don't understand why people are so unsatified with the new GTA. Its a bonified masterpiece. Its breathtaking and its how Next Gen games should be. Visually its amazing the first time you step out into liberty city and look ate the secnery its one of those rare videogame moments you never forget. See Mario 64, The ocarina of time, MGS and of course GTA3. Yes ok essentially its the same format as all the games in the 3-D series but it is so improved. The shooting is much better with quickfire aiming of various targets. The driving feels more realistic and fluid. And of course the story is What GTA was crying out for, a realistic outlook on life as it is dark ,sometimes disturbing and often very dark humored. In comparrison to GTA san andreas which was a shocking black explotation of how a culture is portrayed. GTA4's story is brave and honest. GTA 4 feels like a city it breathes, which GTA san andreas NEVER did! The involvement in other chacters lives you are able to influence is what really makes it stand out. Socialise and understand your friends makes this game more in depth than and of the series.
Best game ever made? April 26, 2008 42 out of 63 found this review helpful
Well, what can I say, after a 6 month delay the game is finally here. When I first put the game into my PS3, the intro loaded and I was in the city. From the get go, the game ooozes quality and detail. Every single part of the game is full of detail, there's so much to look at and take in. The city is absolutely breathtaking, you have never seen anything like it in a game before. Peds walk around the streets doing their own thing, you hardly ever see the same looking person twice, the sun shines down onto the streets and vehicles and the sounds make you feel like you're really in the city.
I played both the PS3 version and 360 version and I have to say that the PS3 version really does have the edge when it comes to the graphics. It's much sharper and clearer and more realistic looking with less bugs. Also there is more going on in the PS3 version, you notice more peds in the street, more vehicles and better lighting. That being said, the game is still really awesome on both consoles, it just looks better on PS3.
There is so much to do in the game you will never get bored, you can be on it for hours and there is always something to do whether it's go to a club, take a girl on a date, pick up a prostitute, check out the city or just cause loads of trouble by attacking and shooting people. The animations and AI are heaps better than previous GTA games and I personally love the cover system.
I'll not spoil any of the plot but I will say that the voice acting is exceptional and the characters are really funny and colourful. This game has to be the best game this gen, it's truly remarkable and you would be crazy to miss out. Buy the game now! 10/10
