Stunning is the only word November 18, 2007 17 out of 24 found this review helpful
This is visually the most stunning game going. Completely destructible environment, masses of clever enemies and a set of amazing nano abilities. Now first off it has to be said that this game needs a top end PC as running it on anything less than medium will remove so much of what this game is about. there is a lot to be said the first time you get to gaze across the island and being able to see animals running and swimming, trees swaying in the distance and soldiers on patrol that you won't be dealing with for ages.
Having played this game through I can say that just about when you think you've seen it all something new will pop up! Its game play is top notch and although there are glitches and the odd KPA soldier that can take 7 sniper rounds to the head its been put together very well! each section requires skill to do well but all out violence can also be an answer.
The mission is a simple find and extract for a team of scientists but there is more to it than that. The game has a lot to offer all FPS fans and the nano suit really boosts the feel of it and allows you to stealth your way through or take accurate ranged shots or sprint up and batter people.
The battle with the KPA is this game is top draw, They are smart and will look to hide and wait for you if they survive your first assault, they will react if you burst through some bushes while cloaked and they will call for help if you give them the chance. They can be tricked though and at times will rush to the spot where a wayward round hits rather than look to see where it came from. There is plenty of enemies at any one time to fuel anyones blood lust and they move in squads so its never as easy as taking guards out one at a time.
The interaction with the environment is something every gamer should experience. using strength mode to knock out some supports before bringing the building down is great fun. Clearing soldiers dug into buildings by taking the building out is the greatest sight going! This universal interaction is the future and I will be disappointed if future games can't step up.
Graphic glitches are few and far between but they do pop up, there is the odd black triangle holding up a ledge but other than that everything flows wonderfully.
The spell inside the alien ship felt strange and with no gravity it soon became very frustrating and reminded me a lot of the prey sections in the little spaceship. The floating alien attacking from every direction it was difficult to follow them and the post alien world section of the game seems to have been badly set out. Often four or five aliens more than needed arrive to drag the section out.
The guns offered in this are limited but they each offer their own spice. Those on top of the demo guns you get an SMG that offers a high rate of close range killing power, a precision rifle for those lovely ranged head shots, the rocket launcher, a gauss rifle that makes shooting down the aliens much easier and a stolen alien gun (there is another but i'll leave it as a surprise). The live moding of the guns also allows for much fun! Running around with the reflex scope or using the plain iron sights before placing a sniper scope on a shotgun. the only beef I have with the guns is that if you miss the head shot then you may find that even 30 rounds won't be enough to kill a KPA soldier.
All in all I will be replaying the first three quarters of this game again and again but i can take or leave the alien sections. I recommend this title!
gives HL2 a run for it's money. November 24, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all i'll point i have a rather low-mid range pc (which i am about to upgrade) at the moment, i have a Intel dual core 2.8GHZ processor, a geforce 7500LE graphics card (soon to go, thank god), just 1gb of DDR2 RAM and 32-bit Vista home premium. at the moment i can only run this on low/medium and although it does slow down every now and again (particularly when theres stuff runnin in the background) it still looks pretty dman good, and it still by far one of the best games i've ever played. i would also like to point out that HL2 is my favourtie game ever. it is true that the storyline and atmosphere of this game is nowhere near as engrossing as HL2's but the gameplay sure makes up for it. I must have spent like 5/6 hours just on the demo levels such is the replayability of this game (especially at the early stages) the destructible envirmoments, awesome eco-systems, great sounds and obviously superb visuals are all arguable surpassed by the nano-suit. the nanosuit is amazingly fun to play with (as is the great customisation of weapons on the move). once you get used to changing between different skills on the nanosuit, you can combine them to awesome effect. i'm sure they have been detailed else where so i won't go into too much detail, but the cloaking ability is definately the best, allowing for highly enjoyable stealth attacks, or indeed just playing around with your enemies. that is not to say that the rest of your suits modes are redundant as i garuntee any profecient player will find countless uses for all of them.
so to finish, this game is one of the most enjoyable out there, the replayability will keep you coming back time after time, and the already active internet community will keep new content coming for ages(there are countless websites dedicated to bringing new multiplayer maps and single player missions). although i havent yet played the multiplayer (i havent finished the SP yet...) from what i've been told from friends it sounds great. don't worry too much bout needing a 'computer from the future' as the lack of ultra high visuals doesnt compormise the game.
The best FPS ever! November 24, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have waitied a long time for Crysis to be realsed and i can truthfuly say it has lived upto its expectations. I am not sure which game the people who reviewed this and gave it 1 star were playing, but it was not Crysis.
The game looks stunning (but you will need a new high end machine to get close to its best quality - and don't think there is a machine out at the moment that can run this game on max), i have not seen better graphics in any game. The game play is great, the AI actualy works, they group up and work as a team to tacticly flush you out and track you down, more than keeps you on your toes.
The industry made such a fuss and were so impressed with Gears of War which looks like pac-man in comparison to Crysis! Expect this to win MANY awards and be the bench mark of all FPS to come.
Do not compare Crysis to Cod 4..... June 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
And why you may ask youre self.Thats because the two games are totaly different. While one has a free roam mechanic the other doesn't.It would be like compering Crysis to GRAW2.The great story in Crysis is,as most games an excuse to shoot things or blow things up,wich if you buy this game you'll do a lot of.I haven't got to alein part yet,as only bought this yesterday, but the six hours i have played have been great and involving.I'm playing Crysis on medium settings,it's all right, but not flash.Though if your pc like mine isn't flashy, get this game any way,you won't notice the bland graphics when your being chased, and attacking the enemy.
Tweak your system - it helps June 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ok so this game, as you probably already know, is really pushing the boundaries of technology. Unless you have a powerful rig you will not be able to play this on very high settings. I have a brand new Pentium Quad core 3MHz CPU with 2gb of the best Corsair Ram money can buy plus a Geforce 8800Ultra 768MB graphics card and it still brought my system to its knees at first. Not to be outdone by this I read a couple of good Tweak guides and came up with a pretty good solution to get it on it's feet. I'm running the game on Vista with DX10 and I went back and tweaked the operating system and my card settings by turning off unnecessary programmes and pretty graphics running in the background and now the game seems to run pretty smooth. I'm still only getting about 20-30fps though I'd say on Very High.
System problems aside the graphics and physics engine of Crysis are shockingly good. The environment is living and breathing in this game and every plant blade of grass and leaves on the trees blows in the wind (you can almost feel the breeze on your face) It's no wonder it takes so much processing power to run this game there is so much going on at any time. As for diving underwater - I was blown away. I scuba dive from time to time (in real life) and in the game it looks completely photo realistic - I forgot about the game for about 10 minutes and just went scuba diving!!. It's all the little touches that get you as well like when you shoot into the sand sprays of dust shoot in the air like in a film and when you come up from underwater droplets run from you visor. There is so much thought and talent gone into this game it is jaw dropping.
Game play is pretty tough and you have to think about your tactics just before you go into a situation. Ammo is scarce so you have to pick it up where you can from dropped guns of your dead enemies and there's no spraying and praying in this game - you have to make each bullet count. The AI is pretty good as well (better than Far Cry though similar) as the soldiers will try and flank you using the jungle as camouflage which can get pretty confusing so you need to make use of the binoculars to tag them and get them up on your radar.
I can see a lot of people complaining how the game runs on their rig and I can see why but as I mentioned before if you tweak some settings in your operating system it can make all the difference For instance shut down unnecessary background programmes that start up when you boot and also turn down the graphics settings in Vista if you are running it. Also make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your graphics card and also your motherboard chipset. This all made a BIG difference on my system and got the game up to speed.
