A great Console guys November 7, 2004 218 out of 257 found this review helpful
Playing the ps2 feels a bit like a step back in time as the visuals and the audio are not up to the standards of the other consoles. I bought it to play San Andreas without having to wait years for the Xbox port - its loads of fun but the console can't keep up with the scenery streaming from the DVD.This new, smaller version doesn't seem to have any major hardware improvements, apart from the built in networking capability, it's pretty much business as usual. But it's so small and cute! Seriously, it really is small! I took it out of the box and thought 'whoa'; pictures really don't do it justice! So anyway, if you haven't got a PS2 yet, first of all, what's wrong with you? You don't have a PS2?! But if you don't, then this is a great time to get one! On the other hand, if like me, your old PS2 is on its last legs, don't give up! Get this new version and marvel at its size, and how shiny and cute it is! :) Great new look and is unbelievably light. All console lovers will be after this. A must buy for all of you!!! There are still some pretty amazing games around or soon to be released. Look at GTA: San Andreas, Gran Turismo 4 or Kill Zone! All great games! Upon opening the box my first impression was something along the lines of, 'Is this it?!' I knew it was suppose to be small but photographs do not do it justice. The automatic DVD drive mechanism from the larger PS2 model has been replaced with a PSOne style lid which lifts up to reveal where any disc would go, meaning it is very easy to get to the laser lens. This will hopefully prevent the common problem of disc read errors with the large models, as any dust built up inside can now be easily removed. Another difference from the larger model is that the power cord now has to be plugged into a supplied adaptor (much like the kind found on laptop computers) before it can be plugged into the mains. I'm assuming that it was not included in the PS2 unit itself to save space. The final difference is that this smaller model is DVD+RW/-RW compatible, meaning home burn DVDs are playable in full colour. The promise of the system being 75% quieter has also been kept as I only occasionally notice a slight buzzing sound as I'm using the system. This model also includes an ethernet netword port, two USB ports and a built in infra-red detector for use with a DVD remote control. Overall, a great games console made even greater.
dont see what the problem is March 3, 2005 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
i bought my first proper games console and it was this - ive had it now for 4 weeks and havent had a sigle problem with it other than at first trying desperately to find the lid !. I havent found it to overheat and it loads new discs quick as a wink! what a great console and much better looking than the old one.
Slim PS2 February 21, 2005 21 out of 24 found this review helpful
RumoursWell there a re quite a few rumours about the new Slim PS2 going around. Rumour: There is no fan at the back. Reply: This is correct, but there is still a fan over the cpu. Rumour: It gets a lot hotter than the old PS2. Reply: Yes it does, the reason for this is the heatsink block for the cpu is right up against the outer case. This means the heat is transferred to the case. So you could think of the case as a giant heatsink. Rumour: There is better hardware out there. Reply: Yes, the PS2 is outdated, but it does have the best games on any console. If you want better hardware go and get a PC. Rumour: It will still have disk read errors. Reply: One of the main causes for disk read errors in the old PS2 where dust or a broken laser. Well with the new PS2 you can fix both of these with 10x the less hassle if they do occur. In all I would advice you if you already own a PS2 then don't buy this (unless your PS2 is broken). If you are looking for better hardware buy a PC. Some people may say the graphics are bad, but tbh if you look at the new GT4 then you will soon be proved wrong.
PS2, Simply a good machine September 4, 2005 42 out of 49 found this review helpful
The PlayStation has always been great, and the PS2 just made it 1000x better, and then the smaller model came along and made it even better, graphically etc. its no different but its so compact and light. And comparing to its nearest rival the XBox, the PS2 slimline is about 3 quarters the size of it and around a quarter of the thickness. And ignore the people who talk about it being out of date and no way near as powerful as the XBox, on paper the Xbox may be more powerful, but when you play the games, there is no difference, so its your choice, a whirring, wheezing, noisy Xbox that you'd have trouble fitting in the boot of your car, or the sleek, quiet PS2. Oh, and the PS2 will only overheat if you play it for 30+ hours straight, and anyone who does that can only expect it. A brilliant console just made better. Buy it Now.
I might be biased... February 21, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I mean...I'm big into brand loyalty and I've never really had any desire to own an X box, gamecube or an X box 360...but even back when the PSX, N64 and dreamcast were around, all of which I owned, I always got a better feeling playing the playstation. It's the same with the PS2, it isn't about the graphics or the sound quality (which, quite frankly, are very good and people need to stop freaking out because their game doesn't look and sound like real life) it's about the gameplay: the controls seem to be much simpler than other consoles, it's just fun...and surely that's all you look for in a games console. I know that people are notorious for supporting the underdog, but I genuinely think that it is the best of its kind.
