4 out of 5 stars "I CANNOT STAY FOR ALL MY YEARS WILL COME AT ONCE AND I WILL WITHER AWAY"   September 10, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I took my 5yr old and my 3yr old to watch this at the I max cinema in Bradford. well it wasn't what i expected but very enjoyable, the little boy who stars in it was very good at playing twins, he has come along way sinse that tripe: "arthur and the invisibles" in which i felt his acting as well as the rushed plot and skipping of scene to scene didn't do the film any justice, if that could be done at all.
However in this film i felt he more than made up for it and this was an enjoyable, obviously predictable as are most family fims, and exciting film to watch.
However i can't end the review, (yes it's not an in-depth review- more of an opinion) without mention of that one liner at the end where the girls farther who has been literally away with the fairies comes back to see her, she's now an old women herself of course, and wants him to stay to which he preplies: "I cannot, (que the cheese) for if i do, all my years will come at once and i will wither away" at this point i almost fell off my chair in laughter as did the other adult i was with, maybe we are just really childish but i just thought it was so corny and hilarious! it kinda spoilt the film but at lease it made us laugh.
Needless to say it was totally uneccessary for him to say that, even the kids knew the answer to that, so why would the old women, (his daughter) not know that? then in the end he decides to take her back with him to the land of the fairies where they will dwell for all eternity in a garden of flowers with no food or stimulation, forbidden to leave by the fairies. right.sounds like heaven.... oh and she turns into a kid again, how frustrating would that be?

ah well, all in all i give it 4 stars, worth getting for the kids, good special effects, just don't take it too seriously, a much better film to get by the same directors, (i think) would be Bridge to terabithia, now that is well worth watching if you like these kinds of films, it has it's flaws but i would say is better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Film   July 5, 2008

I would highly recommend this film. The story, plot and setting are wonderfully magical and the computer generated characters were brilliant.
I loved it. It's as every bit as entertaining as a Harry Potter film. Thankfully it was nothing to do with spiders at all but a wonderful fantasy film about Brownies, Sylphs, hob goblins, trolls and all manner of ugly fairytale baddies who the children have to face to protect a magical book.

The reason I would only give it 4 stars though is it did not hold the attention of of my 3 children aged 8 and under at all. I can only assume to really grab the attention the child needs to be slightly older. The only other slight gripe I has is the American accents of the twins was terrible and really grated. The acting though was first class.

I was so impressed by the film though I am going to purchase the books - there is a lovely trunk set currently available for children on Amazon for 15.

4 out of 5 stars Good fun family viewing   July 22, 2008

The Spiderwick Chronicles is one of the better of the recent flood of children's fantasy films. Wisely avoiding the "epic sweep" of films like Narnia and Golden Compass, it instead focuses on a family adventure with plenty of pace and fun. Good acting and a good script create a really enjoyable adventure - only cheesy in a few segments. Enjoyable for the whole family.

4 out of 5 stars Spiderwick Chronicles DVD   August 10, 2008

Both my son and I are big fans of the Spiderwick books, my son loves the stories and I'm a big fan of Tony Diterlizzi the illustrator. So we were so excited about the tales and pictures being brought to life in film format. Well, we weren't disappointed! Obviously some artistic licence has been used but it doesn't detract from the main storyline. The effects are great, Freddie is great playing both twins, and Lucinda's flower sprites are lovely! A little bit of nastiness though, we're dealing with goblins after all! hence the PG rating, but if you liked a bit of fantasy in your childhood you'll probably like this.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Graces   June 18, 2008

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS)

1. Helen Grace moves into the Spiderwick Estate with her three kids, Mallory, Simon and Jared. Simon and Jared are twins (played by the impressive Freddie Highmore)
2. It doesn't take the kids long to find a secret room, a locked chest and a book marked "Do NOT read"
3. You can guess what happens next
4. Up pops a tiny Brownie named Thimbletack (Martin Short) who changes into a Boggart when riled up.
5. He gets riled up a lot
6. There's an evil Ogre named Mulgarath (Nick Nolte) who commands an army of Goblins, and really, really wants the aforementioned book
7. The Ogre can change his appearance, and is at his most frightening when he looks like Nick Nolte.
8. During the machinations and shenanigans to protect the book, the kids meet a scene stealing Hobgoblin named Hogsqueal (Seth Rogen) who has a talent for expectorating and a penchant for bipedal, endothermic vertebrate animals that lay eggs (also known as birds)
9. The kids set off on a quest to find the author of the book, Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn)
10. When they get back, they have to quickly work out a strategy for repelling Goblins and an Ogre who looks like the Grinch on steroids.
11. Exciting yet somewhat disturbing altercation ensues
12. Just desserts are served for the grand finale.

The movie is based on the five books that make up The Spiderwick Chronicles, but barely touches book three, Lucinda's Secret and never touches book four, The Ironwood Tree. There are a few small differences, but for the most part the movie captures the spirit of the series.

Relatively short, it's ideal for kids from around ten or so, as there are some mildly scary scenes and one close to the end that could be disturbing until the twist is revealed.

It's also recommended that you get the series for your young `uns. The books are short, easy to read and full of magical and fantastical adventures. Don't forget the follow-up The Nixie's Song (Beyond The Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 1), and the soon to be released A Giant Problem (Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles)
