4 out of 5 stars " Your powers are weak old man" ....... but still great fun .....(finshed game review)   September 18, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

Now I promise to keep my bias in check for this review, because for a huge Star Wars like me it is very easy to get swept up in this game and ignore some of the very disappointing problems (which I will get to later). Anyway thanks to my very good mate who works for a well known games retailer he managed to smuggle me my much awaited Star Wars Force Unleashed game last night, so for about 3 hours last night I was force pushing this and lightsabering that, I was in element, yes I am now a 29 year old man but I will still happily put a brown towel over my head and toy lightsabre in my hand and pretend I am Jedi, I love Star Wars new and old, I just adore this SAGA, so buying this game was no brainer!

Ok let's get the bad bits out the way as I am sure most of you have played the demo on PSN and Xbox Live and know where the game has let its self down, I would like to say that these issues have been sorted for the final game but this is not the case. Ever since this game was announced a lot of fuss has been made of the Euphoria engine, it was suppose to have revolutionary AI technology, the enemy was meant to be so clever they would even have an instinct of self preservation. This all sounds very "next gen and impressive" but in practice all this means the storm troopers and rebels will try and grab hold of stuff when you pick them up, the enemy are still as stupid as ever they will run away from cover then just stop and decide to fight anyway? They don't try and flank you, or go and get help? Or anything you would expect from revolutionary AI. Don't get me wrong the AI isn't awful at all there are some nice touches, I love the way Storm Troopers and rebels will fight amounst each other until you as the apprentice walk into the room! I also like the way in the opening level when you play as Vader the troopers don't attack you obviously but they certainly seem to say out of your way! (who can blame them).

There was also a lot of talk about the games physics the way wood splinter's, and glass smashes, and the way the metal bends when you throw stuff (and people at it), now it is impressive I admit, but it would be a hell of a lot more impressive if the tree you just chopped down or the glass panel you just smashed onto the floor didn't disappear in a matter of seconds! This also applies to the troopers and rebels you slay; it just doesn't seem right that after you kill a Jawa or a storm trooper they just vanish? (I thought only Jedi's vanish when u they die??).

Another slight annoyance with the combat in the game it you never really feel you are wielding a Lightsabre it is more like a glowing stick, it just doesn't seem to cut anything? It doesn't cut through the scenery, swiping at an enemy leaves in one piece!! Yeah don't expect any arms or legs to come off because they don't, bodies fall to the ground intact and the disappear... ...... it could be argued these are small things but it doesn't tend to ruin the feeling you are wielding the coolest weapon of movie history.

The last thing under the "slightly disappointing file" would have to be the force powers, obviously they great fun and work fine and If I had not played Midways Psi-Ops on the PS2 I would have been very impressed. You see they problems is this PS2 did the same kind of telekinesis powers but did they loads better, you could pick an enemy soldier up like you can in SWFU but in Psi Ops you smash them from wall to wall you really had a feeling of control that SWFU doesn't quite catch as well. I know I am only a few hours in to the game and maybe my power will get better, but I cant help but feel the force lightening feels all wrong, well not wrong just not powerful, do u remember when the Emperor fired that lighting bolt from his hands in Return of the Jedi it seemed devastating??..... Ok maybe I am nit picking now...

My god I can't believe how negative I have been so far, you wouldn't guess that I actually love this game would you,

Ok all things I mentioned above is probably the reason the game is being called Farce Unleashed! BUT and it is big but if you are a Star Wars fan you will easily forget all of the above this game is the nearest you will get to being in a Star Wars movie. The story so is brilliant and is doing a great job of bridging the gab between a Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the story is told through stunningly beautiful cut scenes, the voice acting is just superb (although quick nit pick.... the apprentice seems a bit too nice in the cut scenes, not the bad mother Sith I hoped he would be).
The story line its self shows Lord Vader making himself busy by destroying the remaining Jedi that survived ORDER 66 and the game opens with you playing everyone's favourite asthmatic Sith Lord as you land on the wookie planet of Kashyyyk your mission to kill a lone Jedi! When doing so you find a young boy who Vader saves takes under his wing fast forward quite a few years and you are now the Apprentice. Obviously being Star Wars there will be plenty of soul searching for this young apprentice and as I mention he is actually a nice gut, so as you go on in the game it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine the apprentice may suddenly start to remember who killed his father! Ooohhh I and really looking forward to seeing how the story will pan out.

Game play- minus the niggles the game play is great fun, from playing the short intro with Vader and crushing people necks with a mere press of the triangle button to deflecting laser fire with your up turned lightsabre as the apprentice it is so much fun to play. It never gets tired picking enemies up using force grip and dropping them into lava or off a huge drop, force pushes are great fun especially when you let it build up and explode! Throwing droids at people is also just great.......... Let's face it if you are like me and always wanted to be Jedi then you can't help but have an absolute ball with this game!

The graphics and atmosphere is just outstanding to too, I have just done a level on junk planet, that's a giant skip and the it looks beautiful, character models too look near perfect, little jawas look great even better when you force push them into oblivion (yeah I got them back for poor little R2-D2)....

I could just go one about how much fun this game is but I best not, so to sum up yes this game is bit of a disappointment, it is really just a "last Gen" game with "Next Gen" graphics and sparkle, it certainly could have done with a slightly higher age rating so we could have had some proper Lightsabre action. So if you are looking for just a next gen 3rd person action game there are better out there, if however you a massive Star Wars fan who wants to play in his or her very own instalment in the is awesome Saga this game is must buy..... I am happy to fall into the latter ............and to everyone else .......

"I find your lack of faith disturbing"

4 out of 5 stars The Force is Strong in this one   September 19, 2008

Having played the demo, and not being a major Star Wars nut I was uncertain about this game. I replayed the demo and ordered the full version and boy did I do the right thing.
The game is awesome, throwing your favorite Star Wars characters around like puppets, utlising the various sides of the dark side has never been so much fun. My only negative is online play, I like to be able to take a game online, but this is a minor gripe, because as a single player game this has it all, a great upgrade and unlock system, and a solidly playable game.
I gave this game a 4 overall because of a lack of online play but this should not detract you from this game, it gets a 5 for fun because that is what you will get playing this game. It will keep you gripped for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly decent   September 22, 2008

Anyone who has played previous games like Jedi Knight will be familiar with the concept and the game style, it's very similar and generally quite enjoyable. The storyline and associated cut-scences run along at a decent pace, and are engaging without being overwhelming. If definitely feels like Star Wars.

I understand the reviewers who complain about monotony; but it's just that genre of game - From a replay value it's no different to Heavenly Sword or Soul Calibur. In Call of Duty you just shoot people, in FIFA you just play football. In Force Unleashed, you just fight people with the Force. Yes, it can get a little repetitive, but as you progress through the game your skill level increases opening up more imaginative ways to execute the kill. You CAN deflect blaster fire, despite what another reviewer says. It's just a matter of upgrading your skill level accordingly and timing blocks right. And while, in the beginning, it's just simply a "button bash", once you master the combos it actually becomes quite rewarding. It just takes patience. If you don't take the time out to master the combos, and it IS just a continual button-bash, then yes, that would get quickly boring.

Each mission is a linear progression toward a boss, but there are some collectibles and very challenging optional side objectives available. For example, "Encase 10 stormtroopers in carbonite". There's nothing to stop you sprinting to the end and facing the boss quickly, but you can take your time.
Some of the bosses are difficult to beat. Annoyingly, most are almost impossible to land a sabre attack on (particularly things such as Junk titans), meaning that you resort to running around them throwing lightening at them until they drop. The lack of strategy can dissapoint at times.

I do have a number of issues with the game though:

1) It's clearly a cross-platform game that was ported to the PS3 rather than written for it. Visually, it doesn't impress. Although the cut-scenes look good in HD, the game itself is underwhelming. Also, the characrer AI is erratic. At times, you do get the impression that the stormtroopers are thinking (in particular, when you "force grab" a stormtrooper and go to through them off a ledge, they will grab out and try to cling on to railings). At other times, they are idiotic... wandering blindly into a sabre-swing. The power of the Playstation 3 is woefully under-used.

2) The camera is a pain in the backside. It swings around with a mind of it's own, and not always helpfully. Often you can be attacked off-screen, with no easy way of looking at the thing that's shooting you. Other times (if you are on the edge of a map), the camera is in so close that your character fills the screen making it impossible to see what you are fighting.

3) Jumping and running... in conjunction with a dodgy camera, this can be annoying. You jump toward a ledge, the camera swings, meanining you lose the perspective, and you miss the ledge and fall to your doom. Or.. you go to run straight across a narrow bridge, the camera swings, so "straight" becomes sideways, so you jog cheerily off the ledge.

4) Targetting. The indicator for the selected enemies is a blue square, but this is frustratingly sensitive to movement, and is camera-dependent. Because the camera can swing with no warning, the selection indicator can shift at the last moment... meaning you "force lightening" the Wookie that's trying to help you, rather than the stormtrooper that's trying to kill you. One of the biggest challenges in the early part of the game is getting the hang of selecting an enemy, rather than a random rock. I'm not joking about the rocks... there is loads of debris on each map that can be manipulated with the force. That means you can pick up rocks and hurl them at the enemy. But the debris is "selected" in the same way as enemies, so in a busy area with lots of friends, enemies and debris, it's a lottery as to whether you will "sabre-throw" at a friend, a stormtrooper or at a crate.

Desipite these issues, If you do enjoy this genre of game, then you won't be dissapointed. If you have a short attention span, or you prefer something a bit more cerebral, then even the Star Wars element of the game will probably not keep you entertained for too long.

4 out of 5 stars Proper 'old-school' Star Wars with next-gen trimmings!   September 25, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

After just having completed the game, I think 'Force Unleashed' is getting a bad rap to be honest. I found it to be great fun!

The story fills in some of the gaps between Episodes III and IV and focuses on a 'secret apprentice' that Darth Vader has been training over the years... so secret that even the Emperor is unaware of him. You play as the apprentice whose task is to hunt down the remaianing jedi knights across the galaxy. But there's plenty of twists and turns along the way, leading up to an epic climax.

The story is better than I expected and rather than just skirting around the Star Wars universe, throwing in occasional references, the game really throws you into the middle of everything. The actions of the secret apprentice have major impact to the series and this will please many fans! At first the 'Vader voice' is a little underwhelming but by the end, you'll be too engrossed to care - same goes for the Emperor (yes thats right... you'll be meeting him too)!

Gameplay-wise, it's much more of an arcade adventure than titles such as Jedi Knight. While it's admittedly very linear, the hack and slash style that we've seen in God of War etc. makes for some fantastic shock and awe action. The combat allows you to mix up your force powers to provide the most deadly attack - for example, you could grip an enemy while you throw your lightsaber at him, fry him with lightning and then push him across the room like a makeshift grenade, taking out three others from the explosion!

At times the combat can frustrate, thanks to your very relaxed attitude to standing up. Against multiple enemies, if you get knocked down, they'll keep blasting you and every hit will still take damage. So a relatively harmless knock to the ground could end up with you visiting the last checkpoint again. The difficulty curve is a bit random aswell - the second level boss for instance is much harder than the fourth or fifth.

The graphics are generally stunning; whether it's the junk planet of Raxus Prime or the interiors of Imperial ships, the environments are lovely. Some character models are quite weak compared to others, but at the rate you'll be tossing them around into the distance, you'll not notice it too much.

Depending on what difficulty you play, the game won't take you very long, although on Hard, it's taken me since Saturday with a few hours play each day (I tend to pace myself through these type of games). But the storyline and epic encounters will keep you hooked.

At the end of the day, nothing's better than a bit of old-school Star Wars and when it's on next gen hardware, there's not alot else to say! Sure there could have been a multiplayer option, but I'll be revisiting the single-player game anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, Give it a Try   September 3, 2008

I do not claim to know a lot more than most people about this game. But from the demo it is obvious that the game has amazing promise, if you unlock its full potential. For those who have played the demo; you should know that that is not the extent of the game, the Secret Apprentice's powers grow from then on, so you won't be disappointed. The only flaw that I can see so far is the apparent lack of multiplayer, but I have not yet confirmed this point, so there is still a possibility of multiplayer.

I recommend this game to anyone who truely likes Star Wars and/or those who just want to have some fun throwing Stormtroopers around
