5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blu-ray Player. Good with games too   January 20, 2008

I'll review this as a Blu-ray player first, then comment on my experience with games. Decided to buy this after the news that Warner had ditched HD-DVD, effectively ending the format war. As a bluray player it boots up much faster than my Toshiba EP30 HD DVD player, Also discs load up faster. You need the Bluray remote ideally, but it's not essential as you can use the control pad. The remote is blutooth so you could hold it behind your back and it still works. it's also a well built remote. As a games console I've only played one so far, Uncharted, which is an execellent game.

So far I can't really fault the PS3.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised and kind of amazed   December 24, 2007

I just bought a PS3 and I have to admit I am very amazed of the whole package, its sleek, plugs in easily and had it working on my wireless network within an hour of it being switched on - as I had a PSP before I was already used to the menu system which was quite handy.

Before this I had an Xbox, and yes I read through all those bashing reviews from Xbox 360 owners about how rubbish they think the PS3 is before deciding to buy one. But I think they are wrong, at least hardware wise - as the PS3 is a little silent beast under my TV and plays games and Blu-ray effortlessly. You wouldn't even realise it was there - having read up on the Xbox 360 it appears this sounds more like a desktop PC and having an Xbox beforehand I can relate to this.

The games I have played so far are fantastic with crisp clean graphics - I play them on a TV with 1080p output so can easily appreciate games in all its glory. Another aspect I impressesed with is that there are so many game demos to download over the internet, as well as full games for a small cost - and the connection is free unlike the Xbox 360 or the Xbox before it.

If you are buying a PS3 now then there are quite a few game titles to choose from - not as much as the Xbox 360 still but then it had a head start. Also I think the Xbox 360 games look better at the moment - primarily because they have not been ported to the same standard. However I think this will change over the coming year and I have placed my money on this buy buying a PS3. I hope this review is helpful and doesn't sound like I am biased against the Xbox 360 - because I am not. I just think you get more under the cover with the PS3 at a little extra cost.

5 out of 5 stars 80GB PS3 will be available soon - so wait before buying   August 6, 2008

The new PS3 80Gb Sony machine is due out in the next month (end August) at the same price as the 40Gb is at present. I would speculate that the 40Gb machine will have a price reduction so wait before buying is my advice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Machine, it's like a supercharged car   December 5, 2007

OK so i've had a Wii since about Feb this year. It's a great machine with some good games, a few great games and a lot of rubbish. I decided to buy a PS3 to compliment the Wii after a lot of research comparing the PS3 to the Xbox 360. I finally settled on the PS3 for a number of reasons, firstly this deal with fifa08 is great with the free hdmi lead. The machine itself is very quiet you can hear the disc reading and thats about it. It comes with blu-ray so no need to buy a seperate player and playback on blu-ray is great, i've tried it with the movie 300. It's more reliable than a Xbox 360 at least from all the reviews i've read, hardly any mention any PS3 problems and the xbox 360 seems to be hit and miss, I personally know someone who is on to their fourth in a year but equally know someone else who's never had any problems with the Xbox so the build consistency seems suspect and I didn't want a machine that could potentially break down every few months. The PS3 machine itself runs reasonable cool as long as there's decent ventilation, even after a few hours its not hot at all. It's build quality is exceptional, it's solid, you could probably drop it and it would survive. It looks great in the living room. It's going to get DivX support soon. If you need more disk space, you can easily add a new hard disk and replace the existing one without invalidating your warranty. OK it doesn't have as many games as the Xbox 360 and most of the games are ported from the 360, however I think next year we'll see a change. It's got innovation like the Wii with tilt controller for driving games and the new eye cam. It's also cheaper than the Xbox360 if you want to add the Xbox's HD player to the package, plus blu-ray is Disney exclusive so for people with kids this format is probably essential.

In conclusion i'm glad I chose the PS3 over the Xbox and it does compliment my Wii as a different gaming experience, Fifa08 on the Wii is terrible but on the PS3 it's great, the Wii is more family fun, whereas the PS3 is great for online and solo play. Both machines are excellent in their own way, but I don't see the point of having a Xbox360 and a PS3 as they are too similar.

5 out of 5 stars A "non-geek" review   August 10, 2008

Lets cut to the chase for you non-geeks out there!! First some facts:

1. This is the first games console that I've ever owned. I'm 39.

2. I bought it 'cos I wanted a "media-server" for all my music in the living room and a Blu-Ray/Upscaling DVD player.

3. I bought my first game yesterday. Gran Turismo, so I can give you no advice on techie, geekie stuff that most people dont understand.

So

Its a fabulous DVD player.
Its easy to set up.
It makes a great server for your music...listening (and watching) my music will never be the same again.
Its quiet.
It looks fabulous in the right setting.
The game I have is brilliant and I may even buy another one!!
It isnt a PC replacement. You want to access the internet in your living room then get a laptop.
Its excellent value.
Its a Sony!

Go buy. You know you want one but dont tell your children!!
